🗓️ Quando si festeggia e perché proprio il 30 settembre?

Nel 2014, Steve Lee, un appassionato di podcast e creatore del Modern Life Network, ha deciso di celebrare il podcasting proprio in questa data, in quando era il decimo anniversario del primo podcast pubblicato.

Il primo podcast considerato ufficialmente “pubblicato” è generalmente attribuito a Dave Winer e Adam Curry. Ecco i dettagli più precisi:

• Anno: 2004
• Luogo: Stati Uniti (principalmente tra Boston e New York, dove Winer e Curry collaboravano)
• Podcast: “Daily Source Code” di Adam Curry
• Contesto: Adam Curry, ex VJ di MTV, insieme a Dave Winer, sviluppatore software e pioniere dei feed RSS, iniziò a distribuire i suoi episodi audio tramite feed RSS, permettendo agli utenti di scaricarli automaticamente sui loro iPod. Questo sistema è ciò che ha dato origine al termine “podcasting” (da “iPod” + “broadcasting”).

In pratica, il primo podcast non era un programma radiofonico tradizionale, ma un episodio audio pubblicato online con un feed RSS per essere scaricato e ascoltato su dispositivi portatili, aprendo la strada a tutto l’universo dei podcast come lo conosciamo oggi.

2004 – La nascita del podcast

• Adam Curry e Dave Winer pubblicano “Daily Source Code” negli Stati Uniti.
• Primo uso del feed RSS con audio allegato, pensato per gli iPod. Nasce il termine “podcast”.

2005 – Il termine “podcast” diventa popolare

• Il giornalista Ben Hammersley lo usa per la prima volta su The Guardian.
• Inizia l’espansione del fenomeno, con più creatori indipendenti che sperimentano storie audio.

2006 – La diffusione globale

• I podcast iniziano a comparire nei media mainstream e nei blog tecnologici.
• Cresce l’interesse per contenuti di nicchia: politica, musica, cultura, comici.

2007 – Apple integra i podcast in iTunes

• Il grande salto: milioni di utenti possono iscriversi e scaricare automaticamente gli episodi.
• Il podcasting diventa un mezzo accessibile e di massa.

2014 – La prima Giornata Mondiale del Podcast, con una diretta di 6 ore.

• Steve Lee lancia la celebrazione internazionale il 30 settembre, con l’obiettivo di unire creatori e ascoltatori di tutto il mondo.

2015 – La giornata diventa internazionale

• Il National Podcast Day si trasforma in International Podcast Day, con eventi online e offline in decine di paesi.

2019-2020 – Podcast in crescita esponenziale

• Oltre 700.000 podcast attivi nel mondo.

Ik heb #AdamCurry altijd al een vreemd figuur gevonden, blijkt te kloppen !!!!!

Vor wenigen Wochen wurde der Podcast zwanzig: Am 13. August 2024 hätten wir die grosse Party feiern sollen – zumindest, wenn wir die erste Episode von Daily Source Code als Geburtsstunde ansehen. Die Sendung stammt von Adam Curry, der den Übernamen «Podfather» trägt und eine prägende Figur für dieses Audio-Medium war. Und der, leider, in die Querdenker-Ecke abgedriftete.

Da sich eine technische Erfindung selten eindeutig terminieren lässt, gibt es einen zweiten Zeitpunkt, der als Stunde Null gelten könnte. Falls wir den wählen, hätten wir noch genügend Zeit, die Geburtstagsfeier auszurichten: Diese Auslegung setzt bei iTunes an. Apple veröffentlichte im Juni 2005 die Version 4.9 dieses Musikprogramms, mit der sich Podcasts abonnieren und auf iPod übertragen liessen. Das war für mich die Initialzündung.

Erfolg ist eine Frage der Perspektive

Was ist aus den Podcasts in diesen zwanzig Jahren geworden? Oberflächlich betrachtet haben wir es mit einer riesige Erfolgsgeschichte zu tun. Die globalen Hörerzahlen wachsen kontinuierlich: 2019 waren es 274,8 Millionen, 2024 wird die Zahl auf 504,9 Millionen veranschlagt. Bei der Genauigkeit dieser Angabe mache ich ein Fragezeichen, aber eine weitere Zahl ist eindrücklich: 2,4 Millionen Podcasts gebe es weltweit, sowie 66 Millionen Episoden. Und – noch eindrücklicher – gemäss der Digimonitor Studie hört fast zwei Drittel der Schweizer Bevölkerung (63 Prozent) gelegentlich Podcasts.

Ich bin nicht sicher, ob diese Zahl einer kritischen Begutachtung standhält: Ich nehme an, dass auch Leute mitgezählt werden, die Audios z.B. in der Play-SRF-App anhören. Sind das tatsächlich Podcast-Hörerinnen und Hörer – oder sind das Leute, die «normale» Radiosendungen zeitversetzt konsumieren möchten? Damit sind wir bei der Frage, was einen Podcast eigentlich ausmacht. Auf die komme ich am Ende zu sprechen.

Um hier bei der Erfolgsgeschichte zu bleiben, ist für mich das entscheidende Indiz die Tatsache, dass der Podcaster zu einer kulturellen Figur wurde – wie ich hier und hier erörtere.

Dann kam Spotify

Der Podcast hat – im starken Kontrast zum Blogging – den Durchbruch geschafft. Aber er hat sich auch massiv verändert. Noch 2015 war er das Mauerblümchen der Medienrevolution, die eine Gegenkultur zelebrierte. Holger Klein, einer der wichtigen deutschsprachigen Podcaster, brachte das damals wunderbar auf den Punkt:

Den Stellenwert von Podcasts sehe ich ähnlich dem von Kleinkunstbühnen. Ohne die würde im Kulturbetrieb eine Plattform fehlen, auf der ungewöhnliche Ideen und Persönlichkeiten sich ausprobieren können.

Der Durchbruch kam – natürlich –, als grosse Unternehmen aufsprangen: Apple und Spotify witterten 2021 das grosse Geld. Und nicht nur die: Es gibt heute Podcast-Unternehmen wie Wondery, Pushkin Industries und iHeart Radio, die ihre Produktionen mit der grossen Kelle anrühren und sowohl Einschaltquote als auch Werbeeinnahmen bolzen. Spotify möchte diesen Markt am liebsten monopolisieren, war mein Eindruck vor vier Jahren. Heute ist das Verhältnis wieder etwas entspannter, was auch mit einem kleinen und unerwarteten Schritt hin zur Öffnung zu tun hat: von Fest & Flauschig haben die Schweden einen freien Feed verfügbar gemacht.

Froh sein, wenn die Nische nicht schmaler wird

Wer ein Podcast-Fan, -Hörer oder -Macher der ersten Stunde ist, empfindet diesen Durchbruch des Mediums mit grosser Sicherheit als Pyrrhussieg. Zwar sind die Massen aufmerksam geworden. Doch die kleinen Anbieter und die unabhängigen Produktionen haben davon nichts – im Gegenteil: Die Konkurrenz durch die schlagkräftigen kommerziellen Anbieter ist gross. Wir merken das beim Nerdfunk: Unser Podcast – für den wir aus Faulheit null Promotion betreiben – stagniert im besten Fall.

Es ist wie beim unabhängigen Web: Die Nische muss froh sein, wenn sie nicht schmaler wird. Wachstum findet nur bei den grossen Konzernen statt. Die wiederum kümmern sich einen Deut um das, was zuvor organisch gewachsen ist. Im Gegenteil: Sie beeinflussen die Erwartungshaltung des Publikums auf eine Weise, die es unabhängigen Produktionen schwer macht, mitzuhalten.

Besagter Holger Klein hat neulich in ehrlichem Frust eine Tirade auf die Promi-Podcasts losgelassen. Ich habe mir ähnliche Gedanken gemacht, als im Mai 2023 Mike Krüger und Thomas Gottschalk den Supernasen-Podcast lanciert haben. Braucht es sowas?

Wo ist der Enthusiasmus hin?

Für eine fundierte Antwort auf diese Frage werde ich, falls ich mich dazu durchringen kann, mir mal eine «Supernasen»-Folge anhören. Unabhängig davon fürchte ich, dass es zu einfach wäre, den beiden die Schuld dafür zu geben, dass die Podcasts dabei sind, ihren identitätsstiftenden Charakter zu verlieren. Ich spreche vom Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl, das die Szene in den Anfängen prägte. Wer erinnert sich noch an Hörertreffen, Unterstützung durch Spenden (Flattr) und viel Loyalität und Aufbruchsstimmung?

Verpufft ist der Elan der ersten Tage nicht nur bei den Podcastern. In der Blogosphäre finden keine Bloggertreffen mehr statt. Und wenn heute jemand zu einem Twitterbier (oder X-Bier?) einladen würde, dann gäbe es dafür Spott, Häme und vielleicht Hass, aber sicher keine Besucherinnen.

Erstaunlich ist, dass das Gemeinschaftsgefühl anscheinend unabhängig von der Entwicklung bei der Mediengattung verloren ging. Denn wie konstatiert, darben Blogs, während Podcasts erfolgreich und die sozialen Medien weiterhin relevant sind. Das lässt unterschiedliche Interpretationen zu: Die Fatalisten unter uns werden nüchtern festhalten, dass jede Begeisterungswelle einmal abebbt. Die Idealisten stellen sich mutmasslich auf den Standpunkt, dass die Kommerzialisierung am Ende allen Graswurzelbewegungen das Wasser abgräbt.

Ein Silberstreif am Horizont

Damit dieser Blogpost nicht auf einer depressiven Note endet, halte ich fest, dass Podcasts noch immer eine tolle Sache sind. Der Podcast als Möglichkeit, sich individuell und – wie es so schön heisst – zeitsouverän ein Audioprogramm masszuschneidern, ist ohne Wenn und Aber ein Erfolg.

Der Podcast als alternative Medienform ist auch kein Auslaufmodell. Viele meiner Podcasts der ersten Stunde haben bis heute überlebt. Es gibt heute einen Anteil von Podcasts grosser Medienhäuser, Verlage und Produzenten in meinem Podcatcher: Den empfinde ich als Bereicherung. Ein Problem kann ich leider nicht wegdiskutieren: nämlich die Tatsache, dass es heute schwierig bis unmöglich ist, neue unabhängige, kleine, originelle und unorthodoxe Podcastproduktionen zu entdecken. Gibt es die noch? Wie könnte man sie in der Flut der Promi-Podcasts, von True Crime, Lebenshilfe und Comedy aufspüren? Ich weiss es nicht.

Damit hat sich auch die Hoffnung zerschlagen, dass sich eine Mediensparte entwickelt, in der sich Enthusiasten und unabhängige Macherinnen und Machern eine solide wirtschaftliche Grundlage erarbeiten können. Wer es nicht nur aus Spass an der Freude macht, sondern mit der Möglichkeit des Lebensunterhalts liebäugelt, der wird bedauerlicherweise enttäuscht. Des lieben Geldes willen kommt er nicht darum herum, seine Seele als Influencer auf Instagram, Youtube oder Tiktok zu verkaufen.

If you’ve ever looked at public #Icecast or #Shoutcast servers, you know that he is being GROSSLY modest. I have only seen listenership numbers in the 100s, and that includes #TuneIn stations. I think the highest peak I saw was on an #Infowars server, with over a thousand listeners.

If #AdamCurry is right here about his numbers, #NoAgendaStream is the most popular internet radio channel by leaps and bounds.

I listened to Adam Curry ànd his podcast for many years, something happened to him. He became a Trumper, had a sudden interest in guns and quoted Russia Today as gospel. I am sure it has something to do with right-wing money buying up the majority of media.

I listened to Adam Curry ànd his podcast for many years, something happened to him. He became a Trumper, had a sudden interest in guns and quoted Russia Today as gospel. I am sure it has something to do with right-wing money buying up the majority of media.

Too bad for him.
