Here in the #Philippines, there is a growing "trend(?)" amongst families with #Autistic daughters: Creating a Facebook Page and sharing their autistic lives.

We all know for years that autism discussion and research is mainly dominatid by [white] autistic boys and men. Filipinos are changing this.

Well, now it turns out that in addition to all the crap I have, the deafness I've had for many years is of the autoimmune neurosensory type. In the right ear, it is a retrocochlear hearing loss. The estimated hearing loss on the right side is over 90%, and on the left side, 60%. If I'm lucky, I'll receive disability benefits.

Thursday started at around 07:30 thanks to our noisy neighbours.

It has been a quiet day, we went out for lunch (Caesar salad for me) & continued our Hobbit film fest.

It has been stupidly hot today we topped out at 34ºC today, tomorrow will be a little cooler at 29º then settling into the mid to low 20s over the weekend.

The long term forecast is not promising, more hot weather & not much rain!

Have you heard the saying, “eat the worst first and save the best for last”? I internalized that so strongly as a kid, I let it rule most of my life. But now, I think it’s fundamentally flawed.

Finally home from supporting a friend as they tested some wheelchairs & put in an order. Had a cool shower, now cuddling an ice pack & slurping Holy.

My Holy order arrived, so grateful because I've been struggling to drink since I ran out. Squash & water are not as appealing to me.

But also one of the freebies that came with it was a shaker in pink!!!

I may have nearly cried. Not only can I drink, I have a pretty new shaker for free and it's in my favourite colour.

Sometimes I think the reason why I am not horribly addicted to all those chatbots is my ND trauma.
I have very strong negative reactions when someone praises me, so the bot sycophancy had the inverse effect on me, a sort of inoculation.

I’ve thought about learning and retrieving knowledge a lot, and I think I have a new armchair hypothesis on a fundamental difference between “learning styles” if you will.

Two caveats: 1- I’m not gonna claim this is a NT vs ND dichotomy though I suspect there might be a strong correlation. 2- I’m not claiming this is how neuron connections in human brains work. It’s just an analogy on how those neurons seem to organize knowledge related behavior.

I think a majority of people learn in look-up tables. Static bits of information correspond to other related static bits of information and there is a hard limit to the flexibility of nodes and connections. The longer a node stays fixed, the more rigid and hard to change it is.

Other people, a minority in my observations, learn in complex trees with cause-effect relations and each node is dependent on its parents AND children to be accessed and updated in a way that needs an inherent flexibility both in connections and in data storage.

We can perhaps summarize these as spreadsheet vs story learning.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on this, if you’re so inclined.

One of the most neurotypical sentences I come across pretty often, when the communication develops beyond small talk is “You don’t have to explain yourself.” and as an AuDHD person, I very much dislike it.

At first it seems as if neurotypical people say it in good faith, some even do, often followed by something like “People who really like you, don’t care about you being autistic, queer or other differences.” or “It must be exhausting, that you have to explain yourself all the time.”

I very much disagree.

Psychology has been my special interest for decades, finding out that I am queer, that I am autistic has been extremely important to me. It changed my life. I find the way my brain and the ones of other neurodivergent people work very interesting, how our bodyminds work, what needs we have because of that. All this is not only my special interest, it’s an essential part of every neurodivergent relationship for me, understanding these aspects about one another is a necessary step to be able to accommodate each other’s needs.

As an AuDHD person, talking about my special interests is something I really like to do, it’s the opposite of exhausting for me and people would understand that, if they actually listened to me and asked questions, instead of telling me their neurotypical superficial, feel-good phrases. The latter is the exhausting part.

Sharing detailed information about these aspects of our personality would contribute to a mutual understanding. But to me it seems, that neurotypical communication is not about understanding, it’s about judgement. So, telling me, that I don’t have to explain myself, means “I won’t judge you, therefore you don’t have to explain yourself.”

To me that is such a telling part of the double empathy problem. It’s also one of the reasons, why most autistic people don’t like the “Autism acceptance month”. Accepting differences should be the bare minimum for every kind of human interaction. I want mutual understanding.
