It is hard to demonstrate since it is filled with financial data, but #ActualBudget is a great application for envelope budgeting. I've done mine every Monday and Friday for a couple of years now and it really helps track what I'm spending on.

@ithoughtisawa2 I tend to select software to self-host based on it they support OIDC/OAUTH. That might limit me a bit but it is surprising how many great services that do support it.

Also, #authelia has pretty good logging which is helpful to troubleshoot #OIDC issues.

Weil ich keine Lust habe🤪, gibt es zu meinem heutigen #DiDay-Projekt keinen Blogbeitrag, aber immerhin hier einen Hinweis: bestimmt 10 Jahre lang habe ich meine Finanzen mit der Budgetierungssoftware #YNAB organisiert. Die haben aber so enorm die Preise angezogen (von ca. 30 auf über 100 Euro pro Jahr), dass es Zeit wurde für eine Alternative. Seit einem Monat im Einsatz habe ich jetzt #ActualBudget. Lässt sich lokal installieren, läuft aber auf meinem NAS.

@Codebender_Cate Take it one step at a time. For me it was starting with pictures. I installed Immich and moved my family off of Google/Apple for image sync. Then files was next for me, so I selected NextCloud. Then see what you have left going to big tech, rinse and repeat.

Also, I highly recommend an AI programming assistant like Claude Code or OpenAI Codex. It can greatly improve your IT abilities! In the last few months I have setup #Immich, #NextCloud, #Netbird, #UptimeKuma, #ForgeJo, #Authentik, #Pihole, #Beszel, #ActualBudget, #OpenWebUI, #Nfty, and #Tautulli.

I was a long-time fan of YNAB and the envelope method, but the app has unfortunately become much worse. Instead of real features, there were questionable design changes that disrupt the user flow – all while prices are rising.

Luckily, I discovered Actual Budget on Digital Independence Day. It is open-source, supports the envelope method, and can be used offline or self-hosted. Unlike YNAB, the community provides features that actually help, such as templates, rules, and notes for all categories.

I am now hosting it with @ubernauten. Instead of paying an expensive subscription for a worse user experience, I prefer to donate the money directly to the developers of Actual Budget while supporting a local hoster.

Ok, fuck this. I’ve burned several precious leisure hours and I’m no further than I was yesterday WRT getting HTTPS working.

Self-signed certificates don’t seem to work, and I’m not the only one saying that. But the answer is apparently to install even more software that potentially has worse security implications and I’m just not going to do that.

Also, the mobile web version doesn't work at all outside of my home network. Might be related to HTTPS, might not be.

I learned the keyboard shortcuts for copying and pasting in the Linux terminal, so I guess that’s useful?

While I could access Actual Budget on my desktop no problem, I couldn't get it to sync again on my phone. It kept throwing an error message. Eventually I just exported the data and re-imported on my desktop and that ended up syncing fine on the phone.

I've got all my March activity and budget set up. Not fun but it is my day job so an hour or two of persistence was enough.

I'll need to see how the web app behaves on my phone without a connection to the server, but I suspect I probably don't care either way.

Really unfortunate I renewed YNAB a month ago.

So I realized I apparently set up docker-compose wrong and the data files were not where I wanted them to be. Here’s where things go really wrong.

I changed docker compose and restarted the container. This does not work. Then I removed the container and docker pulled. This also does not work.

…in the end, the file path was wrong. ./data instead of /data.

I had to log out and log back in, but everything seems fine now. Time to go outside maybe.

Ok, so now I can actually use Actual Budget.

So far:

* Keyboard shortcuts, but not for reconciling, which is the one shortcut I use all the time.
* No budget targets/goals, although YNAB's implementation is so strange I'm not even sure that's a bad thing.
* No differentiation between account types, other than on budget or off budget. Don't think I care.
* No budget categories for credit card payments, which I think I prefer.
* Seems to have more interesting/flexible reporting, including report dashboards you can set up.
* Seems like it will pick up on reoccuring transactions, which is something I liked in Lunch Money but YNAB does not have.
* No mobile app. You can save to homescreen which kind of works offline, but only if you're launching it on the local network frequently. Otherwise things get out of sync.

Spent the evening balancing the books in #ActualBudget – which, yes, is depressingly middle-aged, but it's so satisfying to have some (partly illusory) control over money going out, and I love that I'm not giving #YNAB twenty quid a month to do it.

#FOSS is amazo.

Bon, j'avoue, j'ai commencé par les deux trucs les plus facile. Demain, j'attaque du un peu plus lourd, genre #actualbudget ou #komga .

J'ai désactivé :
- #nocodb parce que pas besoin en ce moment
- #journiv parce que je n'arrive pas à bien gérer l'accès depuis l'extérieur de mon réseau, et je ne prends pas le temps de journaler quotidiennement
- #actualbudget mais là, je fais une connerie, faut que je le reactive/reconfig
- #wallos pareil qu'au dessus, faut que je le relance

@royal You can use multiple family members access and work on the same #ActualBudget budget file. However, there's no indicator who added/edited what, regardless if you have OpenID enabled.

OpenID is necessary if you want different people to have different login credentials. But I think this is useful only if you want to restrict access of different users across different budget files.

Looking at the support channel of #ActualBudget on Discord, a lot of issues is about the bank sync. Is this really the selling point of Actual? Do you really have a lot of bank or credit card transactions that you can't keep up with just manually encoding them? If that's the case, can't you just download the csv, transform them accordingly and upload to Actual instead?

about 2 weeks since i started #homelabbing
changes and improvements since,

- i had initially everything setup on wifi and that was hella unstable, i would get random connections drops. i bought an extension board and connected everything via ethernet to my router's internal switch.
- i had been using my old dell inspiron n4010 as my #NAS but the usb 2.0 was starting to become a painfull bottleneck and i eventually shifted the HDD to my thinkpad with a usb 3.0 port. unsure how i wanna use the dell now, i would probably shift adguard home and other light services over to it.
- have setup #dockge to easily manage docker containers and "stacks" as they call it.
- have setup a few other services including but not limited to, #navidrome, #actualbudget and #karakeep.

L'idée, c'est de #selfhosted sur #yunohost des trucs stables genre :
- #actualbudget
- #freshrss
- #immich
- #jellyfin
- #nocodb
- #readeck
- #wallos
- éventuellement un ollama
- d'autres trucs que je connais pas encore.

Je garde sur le NAS les trucs que je teste, et les trucs qui n'existent pas sur yuno, genre #pinchflat ou #stashapp.

Donc prochain défi : trouver comment faire passer Yunohost par le reverseproxy synology :)

@markusr wie sind die Bedienkonzepte in #Actualbudget im Vergleich zu #YNAB? Ich nutze zweiteres schon sehr lange und habe meine Workflows, die ich blind runter spule. Ich schätze aber im Sinne von #DiDay, #unplugtrump und #unplugbigtech sollte ich mir das auch mal ansehen.

Dann springe ich auch Mal auf den #DiDay-Trend auf: Heute habe ich #YNAB durch https://actualbudget.org ersetzt. Das kann budgeting im Browser. Anders als YNAB ist #Actualbudget selfhosted und kann optional E2E-Encryption.

Financial data tracking!

I've been getting real fed up with Money Manager Ex recently, mostly due to file sync issues, data conflicts and the fact that it's quite old, clunky UI and takes a lot of time to use (manually adding every transaction has lots of friction). This is in no way a complain or any hate towards the development teams working on it by the way! It's been really useful for me. I've just found an alternative that I'm going to try out, called Actual Budget:

I'll be able to self-host it on my computer at home, and the data is end-to-end encrypted which is quite important for financial data.

I'm considering importing all my data from MMEX, but that is a guaranteed pain so I doubt I will attempt it.

Der Heimserver wurde gestern um einen Docker Container mit #ActualBudget erweitert.

Das sieht wirklich mal nach einer brauchbaren Open Source Alternative zu #YNAB aus, das etwas besser mit den CSV-Exporten hiesiger Sparkassen klarkommt.

Wer YNAB kennt, wird sich dort sehr schnell zurechtfinden, bis auf ein paar kleinere Unterschiede in der Menüführung. Man sieht, wer das Vorbild war. ;-)

Großer Vorteil: Die Daten liegen lokal im Browser und nicht in irgendeiner Cloud jenseits des Atlantiks. Der Docker Container sorgt lediglich für Backups und Synchronisation mit anderen Devices.

Wem eine reine Offline-Installation ausreicht, kann auch nur das Desktop-Tool nehmen.

#ActualBudget with SimpleFin bridge integration has been working mostly fine for me... Except that

1) vanguard often doesn't sync successfully and needs re-auth
2) apple card sync never worked after syncing once......
3) the envelope budgeting just doesn't work for me. Like I front load my retirement accounts, so I don't have income for a few months, and Actual budget will just freak out because I'm over budgeting every month 😂😂😂

It's ok because I only have retirement accounts with vanguard so I'm not gonna look at it all the time and I have very few transactions on Apple Card at the moment...

It's great to see #ActualBudget's #localfirst approach in action. My phone couldn't connect to the sync server and I didn't notice because everything just kept working, until I realised a balance I updated from the PC wasn't reflected on the phone. Fixed the connection and everything synced both ways no problems thanks to the #CRDTs.

If it happens more often without me noticing, I might see if the client can be made to be more noisy when it can't connect to the sync server.

A nice side-effect of switching from #YNAB 4 to self-hosted #ActualBudget via a VPN is that it shows me if I'm not connected to #Tailscale for some reason, which I generally want to be because I use it for #NextDNS too.

Slightly different Blog Post today, where I've written about automatically backing up Actual Budget. Its different in that this is intended to be a guide for somewhat less technical users than me (Actual appears to be many user's 'My First Self-hosting Experience', so that's how I've tried to pitch it).

I've moved my config to Windows, and changed the storage backend to Google Drive, as apparently most users don't have 24/7 backup machines, and self-hosted nextcloud instances. Weird that.

I've also gone into way more detail on every command than I usually would, so hopefully it's useful to more people.

Today's accomplishment: I got #ActualBudget running on my #Synology NAS using HTTPS with my own certificate authority, accessed completely privately via #tailscale.

The biggest possible improvement point is that I put the private VPN IP in public DNS. But I'd have to set up private DNS or use Tailscale's DNS to avoid that, so I think it's a fair compromise.
