  1. @RantyHighwayman Entrance kerbs! I think that's what #NorfolkCountyCouncil "Road Safety" team said is too dangerous for side roads off of a 40mph housing access road, after #ActiveTravelEngland suggested them in planning application FUL/2024/0001

  2. @NorwichCycling top 🤦 from #ActiveTravelEngland there! If they're not to encourage best practice and object to dangerous 💩 then what's the point of them?!

  3. @NorwichCycling do #ActiveTravelEngland know?

And the whole 'Cyclists Dismount because it's narrow' is absurd and illogical, as someone pushing a bike is wider than if they're riding it! Two people pushing in opposite directions there will probably be at risk of one of them falling off the kerb.

  4. Things with #ActiveTravelEngland might not be going as far or as fast as #cycling advocates would like, but at least we're not yet facing the challenges that the USA is... Some of their tactics might still be useful here, though.

It may well make it safer by building a substandard-motorway that splits aggressive drivers from active travel and local traffic, but that's very much a third-class concern, as you can see from the longer twisty/acrobatic routes provided for the most vulnerable users, contrary to #ActiveTravelEngland advice. This was said to be about economic benefit all through the last 14 years governments, despite the poor Cost-Benefit Ratio

  6. Many people who cycle on roads probably instinctively know that painted cycle lanes do little to ensure a rider’s safety. Some would even assert that they’d prefer no dedicated infrastructure if the choice is that or some paint, where the latter can lead to more instances of close passes and driver hostility (whether or not intentional).

  7. Active Travel England has launched at last, with the announcement that it will award £200m, funding 134 projects across England to improve #ActiveTravel (#walking and #cycling).

ATE is based in York and is initially headed up by Chris Boardman MBE. It has a remit to award funds to schemes that meet the latest standards published in 2020 (LTN 1/20) and to inspect those schemes to ensure compliance and construction within promised timescales.
