  2. Californians, legislature's recess ends Aug 3. Get informed on what’s coming & communicate your positions to your elected representatives in senate & assembly.

California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike is your voice for state policies that enable your community & your neighbors to feel safe & comfortable using #ActiveTransportation. Note tips on "Using CalBike’s Legislative Watch table”: calbike.org/legislative-watch/

As of 7/8, CalBike-sponsored bills include:
SB 569 (Blakespear) Preserving Safe #Bikeways. Creates a process a local agency must take to remove a bikeway or reduce the physical separation. Passed Assembly Transportation hearing 6/29, headed to Assembly Floor in Aug.
SB 1167 (Blakespear) Illegal #eMotos unanimous passage into Assembly. Passed Assembly Transportation hearing 6/29, headed to Assembly Appropriations in Aug. Co-sponsored with #PeopleForBikes, #StreetsForAll, #StreetsAreForEveryone.
AB 2168 (Wicks) ATP Reform. Passed Senate Transportation hearing 6/30, set for Senate Appropriations 8/3.

  3. After providing introductory bike-friendly drivers training today—to all youth at the Monterey County Probation Department Youth Center—we made our typical rounds in our county’s seat and largest city. Today that included Acosta Plaza and two local bike shops on our route.

We also stopped to snap photos of some of our favorite infrastructure (short of bikeways with a physical barrier): Bike boxes at intersections, like this one on West Alisal Street at Lincoln Avenue, Salinas.

  4. This is a pretty nifty effort in Los Angeles to convert a street (with existing large grassy median) into a park, for pedestrians, bicycling, etc.

"...What if Central Los Angeles could have a new park, 30+ acres and 3+ miles long? That’s the vision for San Vicente Park, a replacement for much of the significant public land currently devoted to San Vicente Boulevard. With the newly opened Metro D-Line and the approved K-Line Northern Extension, a re-imagining of mobility and recreation will become available to reconsider public space for more vibrant communities..."

  5. Californians, learn why the California Bicycle Coalition (#CalBike), #BicyclingMonterey and so many other CalBike partners support the following proposed legislation. bikemonterey.org/calbike-coali

AB 2168 (Wicks): ATP Reform. This is the bill to expand the definition of Safe Routes to Transit, require strong accountability for agencies not delivering projects, and advancing leveraging of STIP funds for ATP networks.

SB 569 (Blakespear): Bike Lane Integrity: This bill aims to prevent local removal of installed bikeway projects due to concerns over lost parking and traffic congestion.

  7. From our yard recently, “sending” these blooms from our heart to @Kleen and @Weather_Rock_Wx, in gratitude for their June 2 and June 5 donations! How to donate, plus FAQs: bikemonterey.org/about/financi.

About those blooms: Learn what we frequently do with lavender, and why we bought special thread at Slow Fiber, Monterey—better still, see a Salinas bike commuter we met when she was en route there June 5, to help her friend / the owner in that shop. bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-17t

  10. Often we’ve communicated with other #BikeAdvocates by phone, or online, long before meeting in person. That was the case with Paola Berthoin of Carmel Valley, and it was such a joy to meet her face to face on April 17 at the Fridays #FarmersMarket in Monterey (bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tour).

Paola, an #artist, has biked 20,267 miles, mostly local miles. For Paola, her bike is “a perfect alternative mode of #transportation!”

BTW, we share her concern—and that of #CalBike—"Don’t Punish E-Bikes for the E-Moto Problem”; take action: calbike.org/ab1557ab1942/

Those of you who followed @bikemonterey back when we were on the bird site, 2009-2022, may recall hearing Paola's name from us there, or on our website (e.g., bikemonterey.org/wp-content/up on bikemonterey.org/resources/bic).

Born in #London, England, she came to Carmel Valley in 1965 with her mother and three sisters. Learn more about Paola Fiorelle Berthoin: paolafiorelleberthoin.com/about
