Often we’ve communicated with other #BikeAdvocates by phone, or online, long before meeting in person. That was the case with Paola Berthoin of Carmel Valley, and it was such a joy to meet her face to face on April 17 at the Fridays #FarmersMarket in Monterey (https://bikemonterey.org/tips-for-tourists/food-for-all).
Paola, an #artist, has biked 20,267 miles, mostly local miles. For Paola, her bike is “a perfect alternative mode of #transportation!”
BTW, we share her concern—and that of #CalBike—"Don’t Punish E-Bikes for the E-Moto Problem”; take action: https://www.calbike.org/ab1557ab1942/
Those of you who followed @bikemonterey back when we were on the bird site, 2009-2022, may recall hearing Paola's name from us there, or on our website (e.g., https://bikemonterey.org/wp-content/uploads/26-Jan-2022-update-Hwy-1-Carmel-photos-and-advocacy-by-Paola-Berthoin.pdf on https://bikemonterey.org/resources/bicycle-advocacy-what-you-can-do).
Born in #London, England, she came to Carmel Valley in 1965 with her mother and three sisters. Learn more about Paola Fiorelle Berthoin: https://www.paolafiorelleberthoin.com/about

Did you miss April 6 webinar from #California #Bicycle Coalition with April Webster and Wesley Bexton of #Caltrans, "When #Streets Fail: Designing #Bike #Infrastructure for #Heat, #Flooding, and Usability”?
We found it interesting and very important. "A #BikeLane that floods every winter isn't infrastructure. A #sidewalk that bakes at 110 degrees by noon isn't usable, and a #street that only works for part of the day isn't really working.” The info on #trees alone will interest many of you.
Later this week, #CalBike will post webinar recording, with closed captioning. Check for it at https://www.calbike.org/events/webinar-series/ or on CalBike’s Youtube channel.
If you’re able, we urge you to register for 2026 biennial California Bicycle Summit, April 23-24 in Sacramento: https://bikemonterey.org/april-23-24-2026-california-bicycle-summit.html

Reminder: Public comments on the draft Active Transportation Plan – which covers ways to make our city more bike- and pedestrian-friendly – are due by this Tuesday, March 10. There’s a link to the draft and a comment form at https://www.toaksatp.org/documentation
Although the Bicycle Advisory Team (BAT) and Traffic and Transportation and Advisory Commission (TTAC) have already reviewed the draft, it’s also important to gather public input.
Please post comments on the city’s web page, not here!

No sooner had County of Monterey Public Works Department cleaned up this road's rockslides (https://bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-winter-2025-2026-news-from-bicycling-monterey.html#WhereToRpt), than Mother Nature said, “Let’s do it again!”

Kick rocks!
That’s what we started to do, attempting to use our feet to clear the west shoulder of Olmsted Rd near Hwy 68 / CA SR 68. Then we noticed the east shoulder and travel lanes were likewise strewn with many rocks! Don’t know what mishap left that mess, but we’re reporting to road cleanup crews : https://bikemonterey.org/where-to-report-a-bikeway-maintenance-need-in-monterey-county-plus-maintenance-needs-for-california-state-highways.html.

See updates to Bike Buzz for more on road maintenance, i.e., https://bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-winter-2025-2026-news-from-bicycling-monterey.html#WhereToRpt.
What to do when you come upon a rockslide (or other debris) that interferes with biking the shoulder of a road (and you normally bike the shoulder of that road, because motor vehicles travel at high speeds in the main travel lanes)?
In California, if it’s a state highway, report it to California Department of Transportation / #Caltrans: https://csr.dot.ca.gov/.
If not a state highway (not a maintenance responsibility of Caltrans), see where to report in Monterey County, : https://bikemonterey.org/where-to-report-a-bikeway-maintenance-need-in-monterey-county-plus-maintenance-needs-for-california-state-highways.html.

Rt 2 Corridor (Congress and Ferry)
I submitted the below comment to the public comment section for the Rt. 2 Corridor project. Capital Streets has a good deal of additional information.
I write as an RPI alumnus and former resident of the City of Troy. While I now reside across the river in Colonie, I return to Troy regularly to enjoy cultural events, to shop at the farmers market, and to patronize the many fine restaurants and small businesses downtown Troy has to offer (and to attend the occasional hockey game at my alma mater). While I frequently ride my bike when I’m on my own, I more often drive, as I’m accompanied other family members. In both cases, I am very aware of the challenges that have prompted the work on the Route 2 Corridor.
I’m concerned about the City’s decision to use Alternative 1A. The size of the lanes means increased traffic speed, with commensurate increases in noise, pollution, and danger from moving vehicles. The loss of tree cover will make walking less pleasant throughout the corridor. The reduction in parking will make it more difficult to travel to Troy, even if the first two problems didn’t discourage me from coming in the first place. Even the added bike lane is largely unusable, as the lack of any barrier from the higher speed moving traffic will make it uncomfortable to use at best. And having lived for a number of years a block away from the corridor, I can’t imagine it being better for the City’s residents either.
In short, the City’s preferred choice doesn’t seem to solve any of the problems that motivated the project to begin with. There are better options available. Alternative 1B, and even Alternative 1A Modified address many of the concerns above. I urge the City to reconsider its choice.

We notice @ternbicycles hasn’t posted on Mastodon about this, so we’re sharing this news with the Fediverse: Tern Bicycles has a new (Gen 3, 2025 model) Tern GSD, "Our Best Cargo eBike for Families.”
If our kids were still young, and budget allowed, we’d love to have one! Check them out: https://www.ternbicycles.com/en/bikes/473/gsd?utm_campaign=gsd-g3&utm_source=mc-reg&utm_medium=email&utm_content=email1&mc_cid=8c4ba2b09a&mc_eid=1473c4e3fb BTW, we got a kick out of clicking their day/night option—and that photo made us wish libraries had Terns for bookmobiles!

@znetwork We love #SantaCruz Bike Church! And here, in neighboring #Monterey County, similar efforts include Greenfield Community Science Workshop’s weekly bike ed labs in Greenfield (as mentioned in our Summer Bike Buzz https://bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-summer-2024-news-from-bicycling-monterey.html) and occasional GCSW bike workshops in other #Salinas Valley Communities (https://bikemonterey.org/salinas-valley-bicycle-repair-workshops.html), i.e., #Chualar, #Greenfield, #Gonzales, #KingCity, #SanArdo, #SanLucas, #Soledad. NYSDOT has been working on a project to repair or replace the Troy-Menands Bridge, which carries NY-378 over the Hudson River between the Village of Menands on the west and the City of Troy on the east.

Orientation towards the common good in cities: The role of individual urban mobility behavior
"Because of the design of cars, the interactions car passengers have with their direct environment are significantly reduced."
"There are few opportunities for interaction between the driver and the environment...Isolation can reinforce individualistic behaviors and cause drivers to reduced opportunities for social and spatial interaction."
"In contrast to motorized individual transport, non-motorized individual transport means active transportation (walking, cycling). Research has shown that this mode of transportation is beneficial for communities (reducing traffic, decreasing noise, and reducing pollution) as well as individuals (increased physical and mental well-being)"
"Through direct interaction with the geographic and topographic environment (different road surfaces, hills and valleys, parks or play streets, etc.), bicyclists develop a rich and extensive cognitive “picture of the city”."

California Bicycle Coalition / #CalBike wants input from all 58 CA counties. Especially needed: feedback from people who bike or walk in #Fresno, #Kern, #SanBernardino, #SanJoaquin, #Solano, #Tulare, and #Ventura counties.
https://bikemonterey.org/complete-streets-in-california-survey-on-state-controlled-roads.html
"Almost every California community has a state highway that doubles as a local street. These are often the most dangerous roads, because the California Department: of Transportation / Caltrans has historically prioritized moving cars quickly over the safety of people #biking and #walking.
"CalBike is seeking input from people who use these local streets to help create a report on the safety of Caltrans-controlled #roadways. Please fill out CalBike's survey." https://form.jotform.com/CalBikeCoalition/completestreets

We've asked #MontereyCounty Health Department & Transportation Agency for #Monterey County to team up on getting word out to #HealthCare providers in the county that TAMC has free bike racks, lockers & repair stations. Often we've biked to a PT appt, etc. only to find nowhere to lock our bike.
Hartnell Professional Center, Monterey (which houses #Community Hospital of the #MontereyPeninsula / #CHOMP #PhysicalTherapy & other medical offices) DOES have a bike rack. They also have picnic tables, benches, shade trees. :)
Sadly, many benches have been removed from City of Monterey public spots (e.g., USPS Post Office & Alvarado Street). We mention that—and, in contrast, City of #Seaside's revitalized West Broadway, which is loaded with benches, and bike racks—in "Rest Stops: People who bike, walk, or otherwise get about sometimes just need to 'sit a spell.'" https://bikemonterey.org/rest-stops-people-who-bike-walk-or-otherwise-get-about-sometimes-just-need-to-sit-a-spell.html
