In the 1960s, folk music traditions in the West gained a cultural foothold. With so much hope for a better world raging against doubt as to where history was leading in such turbulent times, maybe the folk scenes and movements were part of an effort to seek simplicity as the world became more complex. Maybe it was an effort to come to terms with our fractured place in the natural world, too.
The tunes of the times that stretched into the next decade capture the spirit of eras long gone and yet continue even today to speak to those things that endure as well—which was perhaps the goal all along. As much as the world has changed, we still long for simplicity and connection, after all. To demonstrate that, here are 20 great pastoral folk songs of the Sixties and Seventies, many of them commonly unheard by 21st century listeners.

“Scarborough Fair” by Martin Carthy
Active on the scene as British folk movements were gaining steam in the mid-1960s, Martin Carthy was a key figure who popularized traditional music that evoked a mythical world of the past. This tune is a stalwart addition to that canon, full of rural imagery and with the smell of fresh herbs and cottage hearthfires practically clinging to it. Carthy included it on his self-titled 1965 debut. Paul Simon, who lived in England around the same time, learned this song directly from Carthy and the rest is pop music history.

“Blues Run the Game” by Jackson C. Frank
With a life story that makes Nick Drake’s look like a Hallmark movie, Jackson C. Frank’s most celebrated tune from his sole LP (produced by Paul Simon in 1965) is practically his own personal theme song. Sung in a confident tenor that fit in very well in folk scenes in Britain and in his native America, this downcast song is voiced by a traveler who’s searched high and low for meaning, and finding the answer to be less than palatable. But its sepia tones lend it a quiet, rural beauty.

“Fly High” by Bridget St. John
Instead of a happy tune hiding a grim narrative, English singer-songwriter Bridget St. John brings a melancholic delivery to a song of encouragement not to lose hope. The song wraps listeners in soft layers of acoustic guitar and ambient textures intertwining behind St. John’s richly otherworldly alto voice. The song appears on her 1972 record Thank You For …, her third record and second to last before she quit music for a while. She’d make a return in the 21st century as new audiences discovered her again.

“Goldfish” by Roy Harper
An accomplished folk singer and guitarist, Roy Harper’s playing influenced other musicians outside of the folk idiom. Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page was an admirer, influencing his band’s acoustic side. This tune from Harper’s 1966 debut record Sophisticated Beggar is a study in small things—bees, birds, and babies—that suggest the enormity of nature itself. Set to a spare English folk arrangement, the song rings with affection, sounding like a dusty artifact from simpler, more agrarian times.

“Lir’s Lament” by Loudest Whisper
Irish progressive folk band Loudest Whisper present this tune about the passing of summer and the coming of autumn on their 1974 record The Children of Lir. Suitably, the song’s seasonal themes further suggest mortality and the unceasing passage of time. The album is the band’s studio adaptation of a live folk opera about King Lir from Irish myth. The original release is a rarity with an initial run of only 500 copies, and is now one of the rarest records ever made. Fortunately, it can be easily streamed today.

“Rose Hip November” by Vashti Bunyan
After an initial foray as a Marianne Faithfull-style singer in the 1960s, British chamber pop singer Vashti Bunyan took an autumnal direction on her 1970 debut Just Another Diamond Day. On this standout cut, Bunyan delivers a haunting melody with a distinctly Elizabethan quality evoking beautifully bleak landscapes as winter gathers its forces. Bunyan’s near-whispered vocals provided inspiration to 21st century folk singers, allowing her to follow up with second album Lookaftering a full 35 years after this debut.

“Green Rocky Road” by Dave Van Ronk
A firm fixture on the Greenwich Village folk scene and a contemporary of Bob Dylan and Tom Paxton, Dave Van Ronk’s bluesy voice proves to be a highly versatile instrument on this cut. Taken from his 1963 record In the Tradition, this song is full of folksy warmth and evocations of a romanticized vagabond life on the road. Van Ronk foresees the pastoral folk scenes to come in the years to follow. He would re-record the song many times, losing none of its homey sweetness.

“The Fawn” by Keith Christmas
Folk singer and guitarist Keith Christmas bridges the gaps between traditional music and folk-rock and pop worlds with ease. With this song firmly rooted in established English folk traditions with some impressive thumb drone-style acoustic guitar picking, Christmas’ singing contains a pop sensibility to give the song a modern sheen. This cut is from his second record, 1970’s Fable of the Wings, is adorned with the rich backing vocals of Scottish folk singer Shelagh McDonald, a formidable force in her own right.

Led by the achingly beautiful vocals of singer Celia Humphris, English folk ensemble Trees referenced the chamber pop of the Sixties into their pastoral folk sound. Yet, so full of mythical symbolism and tragic portent as they are, this song sounds as if it was sourced from a manuscript of English Romantic poetry—a story of tragedy and loss in true folk traditions.

“Song for a Pretty Painter” by Rab Noakes
Adding more electric textures and with jazzy percussion matched with lonely oboe, Scottish folk singer and scene influencer Rab Noakes also suggests the embers of Sixties chamber pop in a pastoral folk milieu. Taken from his 1970 album Do You See the Lights?, Noakes synthesizes folky atmosphere with soft rock hooks on a bona fide love song to an artist and their art. Noakes would later become a founding member of Stealers Wheel, leaving them before their big hit about being stuck in the middle.

“Rosemary Hill” by Fresh Maggots
Like the sound of a rainy day in autumn, this cut featured on the self-titled 1971 debut from English duo Fresh Maggots is decked out with harpsicord arpeggios and sighing strings. Despite its atmosphere of inclement weather, this song is about seeking solace in a violent world and finding it. Like so many releases in this list, the record didn’t sell well on release and Fresh Maggots soon broke up. But they would later be rediscovered by a new generation of folk fans, fueling a 2020 follow-up in Waiting for the Sun.

“Dazzling Stranger” by Wizz Jones
Guitar virtuoso Wizz Jones had big name rock stars for fans, including Bruce Springsteen who once opened a show with one of Jones’ songs in 2012. This one, taken from Jones’ 1970 record The Legendary Me, was written by his friend Alan Tunbridge. It’s a tune that hits on a familiar theme of the pastoral folk genre—the passage of time, and the fleeting nature of our lives together bound by love. Jones’ reputation as a sterling guitar player is a showcase here, infused with as much emotion as with pure technique.

“Running from Home” by Bert Jansch
A towering figure in British folk music, guitarist and singer Bert Jansch’s deft fretboard work and his man-out-of-time vocal style light up this cut from his 1965 eponymous debut. It shows him to be an observant songwriter in a traditional music vein, touching on another facet of the pastoral folk style—alienation in the city where wandering souls gather. Jansch built his reputation from here, infusing deep melancholy into his music, less about a loss of innocence and more about the reality of hard experience.

In this, this song evokes a common theme in this folk music tradition, which the brief and fragile nature of our lives.

“Hunting Song” by Pentangle
Bert Jansch appears again here on this track from legendary folk supergroup Pentangle. This tune features his guitar lines intertwined with those of fellow guitarist John Renbourne, counterbalanced against bassist Danny Thompson’s pulse and Terry Cox’s shimmering glockenspiel. Featured on the band’s 1969 record Basket of Light, lead vocalist Jacqui McShee and Jansch sing this as a duet; an original song of doomed romance in the traditional music milieu from musicians who knew the forms inside out.

“You Say” By Michael Chapman
Adding some vocal grit into the pastoral folk mix and pairing it with the gentle flow of acoustic guitar, singer-songwriter Michael Chapman’s song from his 1969 debut Rainmaker is one of sad departing with promises of a return that grow less and less likely. In its lyrical starkness, Chapman’s vocal suggests an ocean of emotional subtext in a song presented within an established folk tradition, and yet going beyond it with themes of disconnection being as constant in modern life as it is in folk tales.

“Winter Winds” by Fotheringay
After leaving Fairport Convention, singer Sandy Denny joined a new and short-lived band, Fotheringay. This original song of hers from the band’s sole album from 1970 shows her to be an accomplished songwriter as well as gold standard vocalist. The song touches on many of the themes she explored while in Fairport Convention and later in her solo career. One of those is the bewilderment of how seasons turn sometimes without warning, and the mysterious ways time passes before we know it’s gone.

“October Song” by The Incredible String Band
A touchpaper to a whole scene of traditional music and of original songs inspired by it in Britain, The Incredible String Band seemed to evoke centuries-old traditions and modern concerns all at once. This song from their self-titled 1966 debut record is certainly a good example of that, garnering a mention in Sing Out! from Bob Dylan as one of his favourite folk songs of the period. Full of brambly bushes and fallen leaves, this song suggests the changing of modern times beneath autumnal imagery.

“The Time Has Come” by Anne Briggs
Another song of departing, English singer Anne Briggs’s hauntingly gossamer voice reinforces enduring themes and autumnal imagery in this title track to her 1971 record. Briggs plays guitar and bouzouki on this self-penned cut, along with several others on the album which served as her last before retiring from music in favour of motherhood. Briggs’ limited fame and output belied her great musical influence on her contemporaries and inheritors alike.

English folk group Heron took the rural and pastoral nature of their music to a logical conclusion. They decamped to a Berkshire farm and recorded their self-titled 1970 debut album outdoors as a set of modernized field recordings, capturing the sounds of nature in the grooves. This cut is a happy-sad gem suggesting the promise of love and its elusiveness all at once. Full of airy acoustic instrumentation and breathy vocal harmonies, this tune is infused with the wistfulness of a fading season, and era.

By the end of the Sixties and into the early Seventies, Western folk music booms and folk scenes on both sides of the Atlantic seemed to be a way of addressing deepening modernity, drawing from the rural and romanticized traditions as a counterbalance. As with many folk traditions, when storytellers and artists of every stripe reach into the past, most of the time it’s in an effort to confront the present. In doing so, it often becomes apparent how blurry line between those poles really are. Even in days of old, human beings felt the change in the weather as present times slipped into history.
Time passes. Seasons change. So do eras. The leaves that were green and full in spring and summer turn golden and brittle in the autumn before drifting to the ground in time for winter. The world moves on and transforms into other worlds as the ones we knew fade away. There is sadness in that, but also beauty. The music captures it all.

I was a teenager, backing up two friends who had written a song. I didn’t have a solo. I just sang the melody on the chorus.
I was nervous. Sweating.
When it was over, while folks were congratulating my friends, I stepped off to the side, and a man came up to me. I don’t remember his name now. I don’t even remember who he was.
But I remember what he said.
“I saw you were nervous. You’ve got to let the Spirit flow. You’ve got to let the Spirit flow.”
More than forty years ago.
Simple words from someone whose name I have forgotten, spoken to a nervous kid who had no idea where music would take him.
I never became famous. But I became a singer and songwriter. I had my own band. I taught myself to play. I still write songs. I still sing. I still give concerts.
And yesterday I stood again in that simple shelter of concrete and wood where it began.
I took out my phone and recorded a brief video.
And I sang.
No band. No stage lights. No great audience. Just that old place, an older voice, and the strange distance between the teenager I was and the man I have become.
Forty-plus years later, I finally stood there again and did exactly what that unnamed man told me to do.
I let the Spirit flow. -

Here are our first tour dates of 2026! My duo Akleja will come to Leipzig, Frankfurt (Oder), Regensburg, Augsburg, Eberbach and Aub. Then a small tour through the Netherlands which we are very much looking forward to, with stops in Den Bosch, Groningen and Berghem. On the way back we'll play for dancing in Delmenhorst.
