@MidnightCipherDragon I've talked about this at length to some of my friends. I'll try and be succinct.
Communities of hobbiests have a tendancy to attract a certain kind of person. Probably because the hobby is emblematic of some sort of shared value. There's a sort of hobbiest in the science fiction and fantasy space which is given to rigidity of thought: they seek to create an empire of knowledge, with them as the king. They don't want the lore to change. They don't want the lore to become more accessible. They want it to stay the same way it always has been. Presumably so they can retain their community status as knowledgeable.
Don't get me started on the whole Vs. bullshit.
A lot of fandom there's not a lot of space for thinking critically about media. Especially in toxic parts of fandom--where deviating from the party line marks you as, well, deviant of thought and ought to be run out.
That's somewhat why I like fanfiction. It's a space populated by people who are like "rule of cool it" "headcanon this" and "what if the lore was different lets explore." rather than "Noooooo but the facts say...."
Mainstream social media always pushes the most controversial takes to the front. I remember when watching the #Acolyte I enjoyed it. I saw other people who also enjoyed it on fediverse.
But twitter was a toxic shithole. The algorithm was just driving negative posts to the top and... it didn't feel nice.
Honestly. What I would say isn't that manga anime gaming and comics became overrun with toxic incels, but that mainstream society became overrun with toxic incels.
...just look at a certain major political party in the US to see a mainstream society overrun with incelology.

I don’t get it. I don’t know why SW needs to be morally ambiguous, or why people want to role play as fucking storm troopers—have they seen the movie?
The Acolyte is more of the bad stuff: confused, stupid story, unclear objective, abysmal, actually horrific morals: “If I want to express myself in killing others, what’s wrong with it? I deserve freedom!” 🤦♂️… (1/3)

Just finished #StarWars #Acolyte. I'm more of a #startrek fan, but we won't have any new Trek until later this year.
Anyway. It wasn't bad. My criticism is the same that I also sometimes have with Star Trek: they keep orbiting around the same characters.
By that I mean this. In the last ep a Senator is berating the Jedis woman about the Jedi's arrogance and so on. And he hints "when" one becomes too powerful, how they will control *him*. That's clearly a reference to DV.

I just finished “The Acolyte”. Not boring but not convincing either. The weakest SW series for me so far. Especially the motivation of the characters hasn’t been fully plausible for me.

Kann wirklich weg, ich glaube nicht, dass EP08 da noch irgendwas retten kann.
Es zeigt sich nach Obi Wan, Ahsoka, Boba Fett und nun #Acolyte leider überdeutlich: Disney #StarWars hat ein Problem mit fehlender Qualitätskontrolle, was bei einer solchen Company schon sehr überrascht. Die erste Folge The Boys zeigt mir mehr interessante Figuren als diese vier Serien zusammengenommen.
Das sind wirklich handwerkliche Fehler, und die halt in Serie (scnr). -

I really dislike how the discourse on most any piece of new media is...
If you like it, you're a liberal and good.
If you dislike it, you're obviously not a liberal and bad.
I don't give a shit about the gender, race, or sexual identity of any character or person involved with the show.
The show is just, bad.
The last one was supposed to show you what really happened and it was pretty much what we thought happened.
That's just...anticlimactic.

This episode has the most action in it that we've seen so far, and all of it feels so good. You'd think with what's been seen prior in the series that ideas for interesting lightsaber combat had run dry by now, but clearly there's room for innovation yet. Some of the moments here genuinely made me gasp.
I feel like reiterating that this is really the best crack at "new Star Wars" we've had in a long time.
Dafne Keen's performance really stood out to me, same with Manny Jacinto too. The action and drama of this episode completely held my attention. My eyes were glued to the screen. Not a scene went by that felt like a waste, honestly!
I think I'm glad I waited to watch these a little more back-to-back, honestly. What's weird is how uninterested I was near the beginning of the show, when now I'm just excited for more!
