For this week's #SwampSunday I'm telling you about the river #Acheron, a real river in #Greece as well as one of the rivers of the #ancientGreek Underworld. In #GreekMythology the Acheron marks the threshold to the #Underworld. The souls of the dead must wait on its shore to be ferried across by #Charon for the fee of one obol, a coin of low monetary value that was placed under the tongue at a proper burial. Without the fee, they have to wait on the shore for 100 years or even forever.

Across the Black Spur to the #Acheron valley under Cathedral Mountain - granted to the first peoples by #CharlesGavanDuffy in 1859 - grabbed back by colonial ‘squatters’ within a year, forcing the people off good land with sacred associations
