I followed everyone’s eyes to Rozemyne’s table, where there was a disturbance. The normal clatter and bustle of the eating hall had fallen silent, almost as if everyone were trying to hear what was said.

“Why must they propose to her? Surely they know she had a fiancé,” I said. Today, it was a first-year from a low-ranking duchy. How tiresome.

With a flash of white light, he flew across the room, crashing into a table. “Did he try to touch her?” The words escaped my mouth.

“Indeed, My Lady,” Cordula said. “Foolish, it will cause problems for his duchy. Lord Ferdinand will not take it kindly. Have you thought about how you will handle such ineptness? You do not have a Ferdinand to protect you.”

I looked at Kenntrips and Rasantark. They would protect me, but was that fair? I hadn’t agreed to marry either of them. And Rasantark’s reaction might be more troublesome than the initial transgression.

“Your Ladyship Hannelore,” The voice startled me. How did my knights let this person get so close? A second-year, whose name escaped me, had slipped past them. He sank to his knees, an engagement fetstone in hand.
