Being able to migrate your :pixelfed: posts along with followers to other Pixelfed servers is something we need to do, and will be a priority after I ship the new release, and mobile app later this month.

I say to other Pixelfed servers, because I'm not aware of any other software that would support this, but I do plan to write a FEP so we can support full account migration between software!

You want to leave the instance your account lives on. There are various reasons why you could make such a decision.

Maybe the admin made a call you disagree with or maybe the instance is shutting down.

What happens to your followers, your handle, and your posts then?

On the Fediverse, leaving is a move: followers transfer through the Move activity, your follows/lists/blocks export as CSV and JSON to re-import, and your posts stay behind (Mastodon can export an archive but can't import it into a new account). LOLA, the SWICG data-portability draft, is the effort to close that last gap.

In the ATmosphere, the four things an instance fuses together are split into separate layers, so most "switching" isn't a move at all - only relocating your data server is, and even then your DID keeps your handle and followers intact.

Neither is strictly better. They trade off identity continuity, content portability, and self-governance in different ways.

I’m trying to understand how Misskey account migration actually works.

From what I’ve seen, it seems to transfer followers and following, but I’m not sure if it also includes:
• Profile info (avatar, header, bio)
• Posts, images, attachments
• User settings or preferences

If both instances communicate properly over ActivityPub, does migration automatically sync all available data?

I’d like to know if Misskey’s migration is more like a “social relationship redirection” (similar to ActivityPub’s Move), or a full “data transfer” including posts and media.
Any insights from developers or experienced admins would be appreciated 🙌

Here's a draft FEP to do full account migration with posts and whatever other kinda objects you want to bring with you. It's a trivial expansion of existing ActivityPub/streams systems and supports gradual migration as it's implemented and after an account migration. It should be possible to migrate pretty much everything this way, both private and public objects.

criticism, feedback, revisions, etc. welcome - i don't think this is a "final version" and there are certainly things i overlooked.

After the 30 days of waiting until I can do the account migration again, I tried migrating my account again to see if there was just a glitch or something the last time I did it.

Seems there was, all my followers from my previous acct (@beardedtechguy) finally moved over!

Tonight I thought I would migrate my followers over from Pixelfed to my new GoToSocial account, but got an error message saying "Invalid account lookup response" on my PF account.

Before adding a bug, I looked this up on both GtS and Pixelfed Bug Reports and found this on the Pixelfed repo. Looks like it has been open over a year.

Anyone else run into this when migrating from Pixelfed to a non-Pixelfed instance?

A quick update on this: ended up trying the account migration embedded in Pixelfed. Followed the instructions and received a positive message on the current account, stating that the request was successful. More than 12h later all my followers have disappeared from the current account, but have yet to show up on the new account 😅. One of the help pages states that it can take up to 24h, so let's wait a bit longer and see....

@pixelfed trying to migrate my pixelfed account to another instance. The migration screen says Only followers will be transferred. Is there a way to transfer my following list? I can see an export option for the following list. But how do I import that in to the new instance? The Import section doesn't show any option (at least in the pixelfed.social instance).

Thankfully, the old server has now come back online long enough for me to complete the migration.

As it turns out, you can migrate to an existing account that already has some follows/followers -- it will just add the ones from the old account.

We just shipped partial Account Migration support!

This means:

- You can migrate from other servers to Pixelfed
- Accounts that migrate between servers will be updated (even if you mute/block them)

We say partial, because we are missing one final piece to support outbound migration to Pixelfed, Mastodon or other platforms.

That final piece will be shipping later today!

I'm mostly at my standalone GoToSocial server these days. I tried migrating this account again, and *this* time I figured out the problem: I'd misconfigured my server's proxy settings and *everything* was getting rate limited.

Hey #Fediverse!

Here's a personal announcement:
I plan to shut down my instance this summer.
I'm trying to shrink the number of different services I am using, to reduce VM and storage costs (reducing costs even more would imply downsizing my servers, which would degrade even more performance of my services).

And I figured that I didn't have very interesting stuff to share lately, everyone on here is already doing a great job in providing the Fediverse with awesome content ^_^.

So I think that, for now, I'm going to "archive" this account and use @clemv (a third-party-hosted Mitra instance) as my main account from now on.

And ultimately the instance will be taken down during the summer.

I may take some time to redirect every link/profile and resub everything there, so don't worry if I'm not following you from the "new" account yet, I'll do so before I take down my instance :)
