  1. CW: the inefficient realities of Access to Work etc

    Useful context from @NatalyaD:

"If blind and you need £5k of special equipment to enable you to work. Tough, wait... Oh looky, employer doesn't (reasonably) want to wait MONTHS and if they fork out the £5k the government won't pay it back. ...

"A blind friend only kept their new job because they had old (not optimal) blind tech they could use during the wait."

  2. Access to Work: cuts to support putting employment out of reach – Channel 4 News

So disabled benefits that help disabled people to work (PIP) is getting cut to force disabled into work AND support in work to enable them to work is being cut. Make it make sense.

  3. ‘The Extermination of Disabled People at Work’ (my words) or phase two, which is supposed to come in to force from September/October 2025 and includes the removal of all job aide enabling and replacement support – both technological and human – meaning Access Workers will no longer exist!

Let me repeat that. There will be no more vital, friendly and inclusive Access Workers.’

  4. I #CanHelpWith signposting to disability rights stuff in the UK and how to challenge it. I can also help people challenge UK bureaucracies.

UK disability rights resources at www.reasonableaccess.org.uk (btw much of this can be adapted easily to trans legal rights too).

  5. I wrote about how my February #AccessToWork application still hasn't been processed and how impossible it is for #disabled people to get and stay in work if this basic provision is failing so badly #AccessDenied

  7. CW: accessibility of education

I'm starting to wonder if it's ridiculous of me to try and make sure that a programming academy program is actually accessible/doable for me.
I've been in touch with their learning consultant, and my attempts to understand exactly how things work like in the program haven't been going well at all.
All I keep getting from them is that there are classes that I can “listen” to, but then there are “video” archives of the same, there are no accommodations, they apparently had blind students, and they *think* the blind students had sighted people's help throughout (not available to me).
What if half of it is just screen-sharing of the IDE or slides and they don't explain what's on the screen?
What if the learning material is just inaccessible PDF's?
What if the cert exams don't let me use a screen reader at all?
What if they insist on using an IDE that is inaccessible?
They've been also avoiding answering what happens if I decide to quit because I can't follow things, but did vaguely hint that they expect the whole program to be paid in full, and transfering it to a “third person” might be possible (whatever that is).
I don't like the idea of paying a lot of money just to realize I can't get anything out of the program.
Am I asking for too much?
I want to know what y'all think. /gen

  8. Just emailed my bookkeeper to ask if I can just give her access to my emails and all the subscriptions she needs receipts and stuff for because I just don't have the capacity to do it myself and #AccessToWork still haven't even looked at my application, so no help to do it.

  9. Exhausted after another day micromanaging my work adjustments request, granted via #AccessToWork. My line manager won't get involved so it has to wait until their manager (and my senior manager) returns from annual leave next month.
I'm grateful for the assistance I'm getting (as excruciating as it was asking for it), but it has been a draining and painfully slow process. I wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences with work adjustments?
