  1. "Fairphone’s progress on core impact strategies, page 21.
Under the header "Levels of circularity: 8 R’s" are 3 shaded areas pointing to "KPI 2", "KPI 3", then "KPI 3 + 4". A banded arrow along the left bridges these areas, pointing upward. Its label is "Order of Priority" from "Low" to "High".

    These point to KPI 2.
    Refuse: prevent raw materials use.
Rethink: redesign product in view of circularity.

    These point to KPI 3.
    Reduce: decrease raw materials use.
    Repair: maintain and repair product.
    Refurbish: revive product.
Remanufacture: make new product from second hand.
Repurpose: re-use product but with other function.

    This points to KPI 3 + 4.
Recycle: salvage material streams with highest possible value.

If that's not great alt text, idk what is.

  2. Does anyone know of any good, free, text to speech apps to read PDF documents from a phone? I use an Android, and am looking for an app that can read some school papers for me to help with my retention.

  3. Sighted people: Have you ever looked at an image and wondered "What am I supposed to be looking at here"? You too can benefit from alt text.

A world that is accessible to people with disabilities is a better world for *everyone*

    That's why we say #AccessibilityIsForEveryone

  4. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. If you want people to show up for your shit, make it accessible.

    Also, accessibility includes covid precautions!

    #DiabilityJustice #Accessibility #AccessibilityIsForEveryone

  5. @annaraven @thisleisa @Mrfunkedude I keep pointing this out, too, for anyone on the fence: helping screenreaders is more than enough reason to do it, but capitalizing each word in the hashtag helps sighted readers parse them, too! #AccessibilityIsForEveryone

  6. @Cassana I think making it easy on people reliant on screen readers is more than enough reason to capitalize words in hashtags, but I also point out to any skeptics that doing so makes them easier for sighted people to parse them, as well. #AccessibilityIsForEveryone

  7. @arjache This argument strikes me as not so different from those about search or quote-posting—there seems to be a deep myopia where no one can imagine anyone of good intent wanting to use the platform differently.

But there a million ways to #Mastodon!

    (And I second #AccessibilityIsForEveryone!)

  8. @benjaminhollon This is such an obvious win, too, because not only does it help screen readers, it also helps PEOPLE WHO READ VISUALLY. It’s easier to parse no matter how you read.

  9. @dcoletta I need to get better at this.

To your point, another tip I see a lot for screen readers’ benefit that actually helps universally: capitalizing words in hashtags. The idea is it makes it easier for screen readers to parse the text, but it also makes it easier for sighted people to parse. #AccessibilityIsForEveryone
