  1. RE: mastodon.social/@VeroniqueB99/

Funny, but also worrying at the same time - voices from the #lift are an #accessbility requirement so /should/ be correct/working, and if they are not it makes you wonder if #maintenance of the lift is being skimped on (and thats safety critical building #infrastructure!)

  2. NFL will test a device for blind fans at 2026 Super Bowl

    image via qz.com

People who have limited vision or are completely blind will have a new way to enjoy the Super Bowl this year. The NFL has teamed with startup OneCourt to equip roughly 10 fans with a device that provides real-time tactile feedback that lets holders track the position of the ball on the field. The device, which also comes with headphones so blind fans can listen to the game call, will even use a series of different vibrations that will signal specific plays on-field.

  9. Pete Warden: How to caption videos in Javascript. “I’m excited to announce the public launch of MoonshineJS. This is an in-browser implementation of our lightweight speech to text models, and while you can do a lot of different things with the library, one of my favorite use cases is adding captions to videos.”

  10. Anyone feel like listening to some music that's joyful, buoyant and upbeat as we head into the weekend? Here's PJ Sin Suela for @npr's Tiny Desk. The proud Puerto Rican rapper, doctor and author exudes enthusiasm and smiles, accompanied by vocalists, flute, piano, trumpet, tenor sax, guitar, bass and more. 15. I see something that looks like tabs.
I think “surely these are implemented as ARIA tablist but reload the whole UI”.
    I am right.

Stop using role="tablist" if your page reloads.

  18. Being chronically ill at Christmas can be lonely. Many of us deal with feelings of guilt and are gaslit for not being able to participate in family traditions.

  19. My first week at the new job is almost over, and I finally have some time to share the exciting news:

I just started working as a research fellow at Technische Hochschule Köln! As an employee of both Cologne Game Lab and the Institute for Media Research and Media Education, I'll help coordinate and realise a project focusing on #accessbility in #gaming.

So over the course of the next 18 months, you can expect more insights and resources about this topic and our project on my feed.

  20. Did you know that if you have difficulty accessing your local polling station, you can request to vote elsewhere?

At least a week before polling day (i.e. by 31 May), apply in writing to your returning officer for permission to vote at another station in the same constituency, explaining why you cannot access your local station.

Thanks man, I'll tag you with updates whenever I get it (still gotta save up for a bit). I think my first project will be to design and print low-vision dominoes for my mom.

  23. Using NVDA, I can't hear what the default colours are in Firefox's built-in "color picker" (that pops up on an <input type="color">). I can use cursor keys to move between the default colours (👍) but it won't tell me what each one actually is. It could use the CSS names for the 48 default colours.

  24. Started number crunching for my annual blog post of books read for fun this year. Quick initial stats: 60 books finished in 2023, almost 20,000 pages read, average 375 pages a week. Despite being heavily sedated from progressive neuro disease, and needing a Kindle with utterly gigantic font to keep reading. So grateful I still can! #Bookstodon #Books #reading #accessbility #disability #neuro #Kindle

Not everything needs to be #highlighted in bright #yellow.
In fact, many people cannot read text that is highlighted in bright yellow.
For some, attempting to read text highlighted in bright yellow causes visual disturbances and #Migraine.

    I'm one of those people.

PLEASE stop highlighting stuff in bright yellow.

  31. I am a little bit sad that every time I try to use a #Hashtag, #Mastodon tries to autocomplete it with a lower-case substitute. Particularly with multiple-word tags, this is an #Accessbility problem. I go out of my way to make my #MultiWordHashTags more easily properly pronounced by screen-readers (and indeed readable by Mk. I Eyeballs), but the UX keeps trying to squash them to lower case -- even when the more popular posts I see with the same tags are properly capitalized. Is there an existing issue for the problem on the project's repository that I can upvote?
