Dropping L off at nursery this morning was horrific. She cried and ran back towards me and had to be scooped up by a member of staff. My heart cracked. I felt like a failure and that I was failing her. We turned the corner and looked through the window and she was already happy and smiling and distracted by the other kiddos and the prospect of breakfast. I know she’s fine. I know she’s better than fine and is enjoying herself and loving nursery. But the drop offs hurt so much and leave me feeling drowned in guilt.

Me: <laughter reaching concerning decibels at high frequencies> I’m a working mom with 2 young kids. It’s the holidays. I don’t sit. Ever.
2 days later I’m applying my 1st compress since that convo at 11:59pm. I was NOT kidding

I created a STEM holiday activity for my son’s kindergarten class - a holiday train w/ simple circuit & LED light. I learned a lot about (basic) engineering & how to make a slightly too complicated activity accessible, & hopefully sparked some students’ interest in #STEM. #SciMom #AcademicParent #STEAM

Is this the time of the year when people advertise PhD positions again?
Still remember that one time they told me there is no family support on my stipend because "students are not expected to have family"
I am still doing it anyway because of my privilege getting soft loans from my extended family.
Anyway, not allowing family allowance on student stipend in a country where childcare is not free excludes a huge demography of brains from #academicparent. Just saying.

Hi! I had a son in 2019. At the time I was a postdoc researcher. Personnally I found it really challenging to keep productive and mentally healthy, combining my research activities with a small child, especially during these covid-impacted years.
But the #academicparent and #MothersInSci network on Twitter really helped me to feel less alone and supported.
