Hey academic Fedi,
I'm regularly thinking that it would be useful to have a tool that helps me find articles that cite a paper to contradict (or at least "contrast") its result.

It seems that scite [1] does this but they requires a pretty steep subscription given that I'm not sure how reliable their tool is and that they also advertise a chatbot...

Does anyone know of something similar, or a workaround to achieve something similar using standard scientific search engines?

I was looking for a #DiamondOpenAccess journal to publish a methodology paper on population and food consumption that I've developed with some colleagues.
We stumbled across the Journal of Population and Sustainability [1], that seemed like a good fit.

However, upon closer inspection, I realized that the money enabling the diamond #OA status comes from "Population Matters" [2] 😱
(if you don't know about them, see [3])

So that was a close call and it made me realize what should have been obvious in retrospect: this has the potential to be an absolute nightmare!
How do you make sure that a journal is not heavily biased by the editorial line of a "charity" pushing a very non-scientific agenda without spending hours on it?
Do you only use journals funded by universities? Are there list of "safe" journals in term of funding?

Maybe @PeerCommunityIn ? I imagine you must have some thoughts/tips on the matter...

Discussions are underway to broaden the platform to use by other researchers with support from other funders, and the finalised text encourages the EU member states to support turning it into “a collective, not-for-profit, large-scale open-access research publishing service for the public good”.

Okay, #AcademicFediverse, question:
I feel more overwhelmed with work (reviews, workshops, deadlines, reports, meetings, etc.) than ever before. I’m unsure why though. Based on problems we’ve had finding reviewers for conferences, it feels this is not just me. What’s different now?

Wonder what people in the #AcademicFediverse are up to, these days.

Feels like the dust is settling from another unusual semester for most people in #Academia. Neat time to work on satisfying projects. (In my case, a content library for a new program.) Also a time to explore in new directions, even if aimlessly.

@dennyborsboom could you point me to what hashtags and groups you follow to see a broader slice of #academicfediverse? ‘Cause my own TL over there indeed broke down, and I’d love to find the debates again.

This might be weird question, but here goes: Do students always do research for conference poster presentations as part of a course/lab requirement? Is it possible to just do research outside of official course requirements (just because you’re interested in it)? (Assuming you can get a faculty member to advise you, of course.) #AcademicFediverse

I know we're really early in the #TwitterMigration, and right now things are great as #AcademicFediverse is currently kicking the backside of my experience with academic Twitter.

That said, I'm noticing that my feed here is much whiter than my Twitter feed was. Does this hold true for anyone else? If so I feel like this should be something we work to address, very soon.

@drantjegamble There's a great thread about #AcademicFediverse by @riedl with lots of discussion from other academics. Good for finding people of interest, which will lead you to even more people of interest!
