Um mehr über die Ureinwohner Australiens zu erfahren, haben wir heute an einem sogenannten Aboriginal Walkabout, also einem Rundgang mit einer Einführung in Kultur und Lebensweise der Aborigines teilgenommen. Der Rundgang startete am Bahnhof in Faulconbridge und nach einer kurzen Vorstellungsrunde ging es dann dort auch gleich in den Regenwald.
An Stationen auf unserem Weg durch den Busch hat uns der Guide immer wieder mit ausführlichen Informationen versorgt, zum Beispiel, dass das Leben der Aborigines in fünf Monden gerechnet wird:
- New Moon (Neumond, Geburt bis ca. 5 Jahre)
- Half Moon (Halbmond, bis zur Adoleszenz)
- Full Moon (Vollmond, Adoleszenz bis ca. 55 Jahre, bei Frauen bis zur Menopause)
- Old Moon (Alter Mond)
- Death (Tod)
Wir bekamen Erläuterungen zu einzelnen Pflanzen sowie deren Wirkung als Heilpflanzen oder deren Essbarkeit.
Außerdem besuchten wir eine Kultstätte, an der Ritzzeichnungen mit kultischer Symbolik in den Sandsteinfels geritzt waren.
Mittagspause war dann in einer großen Höhle, die den Aborigines ebenfalls als Kultstätte gedient hat und noch heute dient.
Die Felsformationen, die die Natur, hauptsächlich wohl Wasser, hier aus dem Sandstein geschaffen hat ist sehr beeindruckend und erinnert an Canyons in Nordamerika.
Außerdem wurden Farben aus Naturmaterialien, vornehmlich aus zerriebenem Gestein, vorgestellt, die wir dann auch selbst ausprobieren durften.
Der weitere Weg zurück war dann doch recht beschwerlich, weil wir im Prinzip weglos, lediglich einem kaum erkennbaren Pfad folgend, durch den Regenwald geführt wurden. Auch hier erreichten wir dann erneut eine den Aborigines heilige Stelle, an der ein kleiner Wasserfall in ein kreisrundes Becken mündet.
Kreisrunde Strukturen haben in der Kultur der Aborigines eine besondere Bedeutung, weil der Kreis den Schoß der Mutter Erde symbolisiert.
Als besondere Plage erwiesen sich auf dem Weg durch den Regenwald eine Vielzahl von Blutegeln, die es immer wieder von der Haut und der Kleidung zu entfernen galt. Unser Guide erläuterte dazu, dass es dort seit drei Jahren ungewöhnlich nasse Sommer gibt, was zu einer explosionsartigen Vermehrung der Tiere geführt hat.
Nach gut sechs Stunden waren wir dann müde, aber mit einer Fülle neuer Informationen versorgt, wieder an unserem Ausgangspunkt angekommen.
