  1. Canada's federal government has recognized Aboriginal title over the archipelago of Haida Gwaii, which is off British Columbia's northern coast, in a historic agreement with the Haida First Nation. The Big Tide Haida Title Lands Agreement affirms that the Haida have title over the islands' lands, freshwater and foreshores, and transitions Crown-title land to the Haida people. It is the first time the federal government has recognized Aboriginal title through negotiations, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the ceremony, calling it: "A new chapter [that] confirms an incontrovertible and long-known truth: Haida Gwaii belongs to you." 2. Another good piece from Pearls and Irritations:

"And sure, Lidia is angry—hell, I’m angry too. But the issue isn’t Lidia’s anger; the real problem is that the rest of you aren’t angry enough. Lidia’s anger is not something to pathologise; it’s a righteous response to the injustices she’s fighting against. She’s doing her job, representing her community, and calling out the violence and oppression our people face every day. Instead of focusing on her anger, we should be turning the mirror on the state and asking why it continues to perpetuate extreme levels of violence on certain sections of our community. The real outrage should be directed at the systems that incarcerate, disappear, and kill our people, not at those like Lidia who are brave enough to speak out against it."

Event brief: "A Truth Telling & Treaty forum In conversation with Senator Lidia Thorpe, Uncle Gary Foley, Uncle Jim Everett and others.

This event aims to provide an opportunity to hear from First Nations Elders and leaders about where to go from here on First Nations Justice.

We will be discussing the importance of Truth Telling as the first step – looking at current developments, and what a national Truth Telling process would contribute. We will also discuss what genuine, inclusive Treaty processes would look like, from the grassroots to National & International levels.

Treaty must be for the people, by the people. It has to come from the ground up, and each of us have a role to play in making it happen."

  4. For Aboriginal community leader Karen Gibson, Australia's historic referendum on Saturday is an opportunity like no other.

"I never thought I would experience it in my time here," says the proud Yalanji and Nyungkul woman. "My ancestors were invisible. They're still invisible. I want to be visible."
