  2. #Linux experts (#Mint #Debian):

    Who has recommendations for...

    (1) Graphical #cron-job editor
    (2) Graphical #Systemd editor - specifically timers
    (3) Graphical file-share / #Samba configurator
    (4) Graphical File transfer client (SFTP/S3), like Cyberduck
    (5) Video editor (similar to #FinalCutPro on #MacOS)
    (6) Easy to use vector drawing tool (Simpler and easier than #inkscape )
    (7) Simple document editor (I used to like #AbiWord back in the day - #LibreWriter feels very complicated to me)

  3. #TIL: If you want to edit a document in your language with #AbiWord, better set the language first. #Forexample, in Linux you set the environment variable LANG before invoking #abiword, you can do it in one #bash command. f'rinstance:

    LANG=en_US.UTF-8 abiword

Of course you don't have to change anything, if you work in #english

    Otherwise, the characters become FUBAR!

  4. @cocaine_owlbear

    It wasn't #Abiword the official Gnome word-processor? 🤷‍♂️

  5. I guess I'd like to understand what magical things you can do with a word processor from #Microsoft that I can't do with #AbiWord or #LibreOffice. At this stage, getting me back to Word would require both dragons and lasers.

  6. New #blog post: Setting up #Gnome (Linux) for #seniors. I've been looking into how to best set up an extremely simplified and limited #Linux for #elderly people. There don't seem to be many pre-existing efforts for this, so I figured I'd write a short blog about it.

I've added #Mastodon as a #comment system for all my #blog posts. A reaction to this Mastodon post will show up as a comment.

  7. @mosgaard Yes, in fact, I've been working on a blog post describing how I'm setting up #Gnome to be as simple as possible (with extensions) and what software I use.

Regarding email, I've opted for #Geary instead of #Thunderbird. Much fewer features, which in this case is a good thing. (Myself, I would absolutely go for Thunderbird...) I already set it up to work with his email, so compatibility isn't a problem.

#Abiword similarly seems nice and low in features, I've been trying it out.

  8. Whenever I see people talking about LIbreOffice, I think back to the early days of GNOME of AbiWord and Gnumeric.

While they didn't have all the bells and whistles of LibreOffice, they were a delight to use- fast, easy, and I'd say they were fun too.

Yes, StarOffice was functional and powerful, it was never really *fun*. While I'm glad it was freed and made into OpenOffice, then LibreOffice, I wish the simpler tools had persisted.

    #LibreOffice #GNOME #OpenOffice #StarOffice #AbiWord #Gnumeric

  12. What happened to abi-collab? @nextcloud and @libreoffice still doesn't have a way to collaborate on documents in a full desktop app like Microsoft offers, but #abiword had that in 2009.

  13. Regarding writing, my sole idea now is to rely on #Abiword to simply write down stuff and lay it out in a very basic way, then give it to a professional to create a satisfying layout for ebook and print.

Regarding computers, I am considering writing down a white paper just for the sake of proposing how to do things differently. Sounds quite dumb and I suppose many people did the same but I keep thinking that we went too far with IT. I wish things could be simpler. Our lives would be improved.

  14. @peotr26 the standard allows two approaches: the file can be a ZIP archive of XML and other packed content, or the file can be a flat XML file. Maybe defaults to the latter? Try opening the larger file in a text editor - a flat XML file will be human readable. A ZIP version will open in a ZIP compatible archive tool. If both look zipped, then look at the properties (in Ark, File->Properties) for compression ratio - perhaps the two apps compress files differently.

  15. @skquinn thanks for sharing, Quinn. Glad to find an #Abiword user at Mastodon. You are the first one.
