  1. There are a lot of posts about the tragedy this week, in which almost all the children from the village died in a preventable accident.
Those of us in other schools around Britain sat in disbelief as our teachers told us of the horror.

  2. On the anniversary of the #Aberfan Disaster, which happened long before I was born, I think about the village, the memorial garden now there, and visiting the cemetery and seeing so many graves of children. It’s all so well kept, and thought provoking. I’m glad that after all these years, it is talked about with respect.

I was 10 in 1966 and in a primary school in Cardiff just like the one destroyed in Aberfan.

Our headmaster, Mr Harris, walked into our classroom to tell our form teacher of the disaster.

As he looked around our classroom, he wept...It was the first time I'd seen a grown man cry in public.

I still remember that awful day as if it was yesterday.

  4. 59 years ago the Aberfan disaster took place taking the lives of many children at their primary school. My grandfather went and dug for survivors, and by all accounts was never the same afterwards!

  5. "Palace of Gold" was #LeonRosselson's response to the #Aberfan disaster. 59 years ago today, 116 children and 28 adults were killed a spoil heap collapsed at 9.15am, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and a row of houses.

The #AberfanDisaster happened because #NationalCoalBoard safety guidelines had been ignored and warnings dismissed. Rosselson's finest song lays bare the #classPolitics of disdain for the safety of #workingClass children.

Today marks 59 years since the Aberfan disaster.

At 9:15am on 21 October 1966, a coal spoil tip collapsed onto the Welsh village of Aberfan, tragically killing 116 children and 28 adults.

One of the darkest days in Wales’ history — never forgotten.

2/2 Really thinking of this piece by Aaron on the particular dangers that the legacies of coal mining pose now in terms of landslides. This weekend #Wales is not just battered by storm but also heavy rains again. The memory of #Aberfan makes all this so much worse.

Also somehow can’t get my head around the fact that we have already now reached the point where I am texting a climate activist friend, twice in two weeks: are you ok? Stay safe

  8. It’s the anniversary of the #Aberfan disaster. It happened before I was born, but I have been to Aberfan, seen the beautifully kept memorial garden, and seen rows of children’s graves. It’s all very poignant and touching.
Then when you read about the causes of, and inquiry into the disaster, you see a catalogue of failures, and see parallels with other disasters. How many more times? ☹️

  9. Today is the 58th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster. I have tried to write a new post for my blog, but again I've failed. For a Welshman and grandson of a miner, it is all still so very raw. Instead I'll remind you of Nansi Williams’ story.

  10. Aber - fan (21 Hydref 1966)

    I Hamelin erstalwm,
    os yw'r hen stori'n ffaith,
    fe ddaeth rhyw bibydd rhyfedd
    yn gwisgo mantell fraith.

    A'r pibydd creulon hwnnw
    â aeth a'r plant i gyd
a'u cloi, yn ôl yr hanes,
    o fewn y mynydd mud.

    A Hamelin oedd ddistaw
    a'r holl gartrefi'n brudd,
    a mawr fu'r galar yno
    tros lawer nos a dydd.

    Distawodd chwerthin llawen
    y plant wrth chwarae 'nghyd,
    pob tegan bach yn segur,
a sŵn pob troed yn fud.

    Trist iawn fu hanes colli
    y plant diniwed, gwan -
    yn Hamelin erstalwm,
    heddiw yn Aber-fan.

  13. Wales fears another #Aberfan as Westminster refuses to clean up tips - theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/d tories don't give a damn, because probably only labour voters would die...

  14. It shouldn't be any surprise that the architect of eat-out-to-help-out-the-virus doesn't care if a few hundred more Welsh children die. It's everyone else's job to make sure the Tory bastards are run out of office and to keep the memory of how much they hate ordinary folks alive so they can never return.

  15. The accounts and reporting here are heartbreaking.

" The father repeated: "I want it recorded – ‘Buried alive by the National Coal Board.’ That is what I want to see on the record. That is the feeling of those present. Those are the words we want to go on the certificate." " #Aberfan

  21. This trip to Wales has raised a number of questions in my mind about Welsh identity and how it applies to someone who’s spent almost half their life on the opposite side of the planet.

    So today, I visited #aberfan

  22. Just watched the #Aberfan episode of The Crown. That was a hard one to get through. I had family went up to help dig. I remember as a dwt when we'd drive through the village the whole car would be silent for the duration, mum, dad, me and my sisters. Not planned, just speechless in its presence.

I found the episode to be quite respectful and well done. Anyone else see it?
