Oh FFS - LLMs are even enshittifying #AbeBooks. I search using an ISBN only. The book I was looking for is an 2011 English Translation of a 17th century Latin translation of Confucius. The translator is Thierry Maynard SJ.
"Closest match" was: *Machine Translation* (MIT, 2017) by Thierry Poibeau.
Match = 'translation' in title and first name 'Thierry'. Only an #LLM could output that as close.

I need to downsize my library and I'm getting ready to sell a ton of my #cartography book collection. I'm looking at both #Alibris and #Biblio as good options. Does anyone have any experience using either platform and any recommendations for either one? I'm also looking at #AbeBooks but none of my stuff is really that old or rare, and AbeBooks seems to have higher fees than the other two.

Dear independent bookshop on #AbeBooks with millions of books carefully updated by price-setting scripts, I don't know how you figured out that 0,55 € is a price I'm willing to pay for the extra service of "buying directly from your website so I don't give a cent to Amazon", but yes, you're perfectly correct. By the way, #AbeBooks is owned by Amazon which seems to enjoy making everything shittier.

I ordered a book from a US used-book store via #AbeBooks, paid for it and received nothing. The seller says they sent it and refuses to offer any compensation. AbeBooks offers no way to file a complaint or even grade the seller. What do I do now?

Surprising: #AbeBooks just had a major frontend refresh. (This is always a scare, because #Amazon.) JavaScript is now required almost everywhere, Stripe resources are loaded on every page. My "saved for later" list briefly vanished but returned on the next load. For now functionality seems preserved, but I don't dare to test my scrapers.

I looked on #abebooks & I could get a better copy for $40-60 but -- this is the big surprise -- BUT -- do I really need it, at my age (mid-60's)? I won't keep my #books forever, if I ever move to a smaller place...

I just don't understand why people hail this online bookstore as the anti-Amazon. It's yet another centralised for-profit bookstore.
