  2. It's a music weekend here in Australia, with the ABC Classic 100 Countdown in progress.

As expected, many people have gone for their favourites rather than the theme of "Greatest of All Time". Granted that a strong overlap of those concepts is likely.

I know some of my choices won't show up - because I had to enter them manually.

  3. Just realised my #ABCClassic listening has really dropped off since I made a concerted effort to take public transport rather than driving my car

Years ago I stopped using earphones on public transport, and now sometimes I don’t even have any on me if I want to listen to something on my phone in public

And I’ve stopped really listening to music around the house unless it’s background for a task I’m doing with my hands. I’ve been so slammed with work recently that I haven’t had time to cook or tend my plants or do any of the mending, darning and clothing alterations I’ve meant to do

I prefer to work in monkish silence; my brain tends to get distracted by music and I go off on tangents of what it reminds me of

Exception: long YouTube playlists of unfamiliar baroque music; something about the orderliness of baroque music soothes my mind, but if I know the piece I’ll stop what I’m doing and just listen to it

The car is really where I listen to ABC Classic the most because it combines ‘doing something with my hands’ with short pieces of music that work well with the short drives I tended to do – to the shops, or to visit friends and family, or to film screenings at cinemas where the parking is better than the public transport

  4. I keep asking myself, what does it mean for a piece to be one of the "greatest of all time"? Should I be thinking of the biggest, the most significant? The ones that I love the most? Maybe the ones I that are best to share with somebody trying to get into classical music?

They have done a lot of themed vote-and-countdowns in the past -
https://www.abc.net.au/classic/classic100/archive/ - that could be said to fit those notions better. So I think I had better just go with whatever feels right, without worrying about 'doing it right'. Am sure they didn't specify further so that it would be up to listener interpretation #classic100, #ABCClassic

  5. Yesterday managed to stumble me across two pieces I had been trying to identify for months for a characteristic repeated sound, in Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight - https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cLMK5Y53Yzg - and Philip Glass's Metamorphosis - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M73x3O7dhmg

    So there's that.

  6. Can’t quite believe it, but Spring for Twitter still works. That said, it feels like a ghost town. Even the #Classic100 tag doesn’t have the buzz it used to. I remember when it was full of chatter after every piece. Times have changed, clearly.

  7. Today I was listening to #Classic100 on @abcclassic and realised how much I miss Twitter. I used to live-tweet during these events, posting thoughts after each piece and chatting with others in real time. It was such a great way to feel part of the classical music community.

Facebook doesn’t have the same energy for this sort of thing. It’s a pity so many of the accounts I followed aren’t on Mastodon, though I really value the connections I’ve made here.

  9. Now it's a listener requesting Vangelis's "Conquest Of Paradise" cos it gets her in the feels every time.

What? The conquest of the peoples of Sth America by whites?

    #ABCClassic

  10. #ABCClassic radio sure churning out the crowd favs this afternoon. It's like an old-fashioned barn dance for a Friday night before there was TV to stay home for. #Feelgood overload. They'll be rolling out the musical hugs shortly.

  11. An early morning drive in the #adelaidehills with all the dams and creeks full and flowing, the sun shining and #ABCClassic playing #HansZimmer has lifted my soul 😊

  12. The big question is do you actually own the Number 1 instrument? #Classic100
If you don't, they might become more expensive after this weekend 😜 #ABCClassic

  13. CW: TERF associated, not important, swearing #1

Listening to Australia's #ABCClassic (FM) in the car.
Pretty bloody sure of the station. Got Beethoven' s Eroica there this morning too with a little background re Napoleon and Beethoven and deafness.

And what should start playing but an all too familiar tune on the ****ing celeste, but then a solo violin joins in - discordantly and poorly in my non-expert opinion.
Yep its ****ing Hedwig's Theme from the HP movies.

  14. If I had enemies I'm doing a good job of confusing them. The #ABCClassic Listen App thinks I'm in Queensland and #TheGuardian thinks I'm in Dolans Bay - wherever that is 😆

  15. Far out! Can #ABCClassic stick to just playing music for a while? rather than this relentless chatter from presenters who think they are actually entertaining when NOT playing an instrument?

Put the focus back on the music and less on yourselves.

  16. @siftinsand I’m looking forward to an evening of classic concertos tonight from 8pm on #ABCClassic. I tuned in last night by chance and spent the evening with Beethoven 5 and Rach 2.

  17. Last weekend, Australia's #ABCClassic radio station ran a Top100 #MusicForTheScreen which features the best #music in #film and #videogames as voted by Australians.

Despite being #taxPayerFunded, their #websiteFails to load the audio via a privacy browser. The US-served (#Akamai) javascript fails to load it and appears to use a protocol "coremedia://" which appears to be some kind of bizarre proprietary thing.

    Weird.

How can aware Australian's enjoy it?
