  1. ✊ to the ABC staff going on strike today.

  3. "Australians lay dead as investors of Optus's parent company bought shares" is one hell of a link snippet. The burn melted a hole in my monitor.

I've often grumbled about the clickbaity headlines ABC Australia tacks above otherwise sane articles, but I have no complaint here. (The full headline is "Three Australians lay dead as investors of Optus's parent company Singtel were buying up its shares" - which lacks some of the punch but is an accurate summary.)

  4. Seriously #ABCAustralia
FUCK OFF! with your Liberal Party /Murdoch Media talking points.
Australia does not have a funding problem for these projects. It has a REVENUE problem. If corporations and billionaires paid their taxes we could have a lot more Public Transport.
Plus the SRL connects multiply train lines together. It's not just for people traveling from Cheltenham to Box Hill. (another Murdoch media myth) #Auspol #SRL

The ABC attempting to try and read between the lines and coming out looking like conspiracy theorists.

Also, how come the #LNP and #labor can have big donors but not independents. (Rhetorical)

  6. CW: #Genoocide

    Hi #ABCAustralia

You have a reflex response when a guest uses the word "genocide" (the one that Israel is doing, not the ones done to Jews, Armenians, Aborigines.... apparently). Francesca Albanese pointed out your ridiculous position really well on Radio National this morning.

    Do not redefine #genocide.

I'll give you a hand: In the ninth ed. Macquarie, it is on page 649 between Genoa cake and Genoese. This word is not fuzzy. The actions of #Israel (and the planned actions of the #USA, announced by their President) are very clearly genocidal. As an organisation who's profession is words, you should be confidently using them in the manner the dictionary documents, then standing firmly behind the battlement of the definition.

(It is worth looking up the writings of the brilliant Raphael #Lemkin too - particularly the bit about preventing the 'rise of future Hitlers'. Maybe it is time for a Background Briefing about the word.)

  7. I have a 💡 idea. Let's fund it completely by just withdrawing some minor subsidies from fossil fuels. It'd be win-win: no taxpayer impact, renewables get funded, and old fossils get an incentive (less profit) to move their investments from carbon to renewables.

    abc.net.au/news/2023-11-23/aus

Also, the article has a rather unfortunately-placed and worded subheading.

  8. The #mortgage trap - During the pandemic, as #house prices surged, many Australians took out very large #homeloans while interest #rates were at historic lows. Mortgage repayments for some borrowers have doubled or tripled, leaving them drowning in #debt.
#ABCAustralia are investigating how we got into this situation, who is to blame and what needs to change – and they need your help. Whether improper lending practices have contributed to the current #financial stress that mortgage holders are experiencing. #property

  9. Last night on #ABC730, there was a short story on #antibiotic use on factory farmed animals such as #pigs and #chickens in #Australia. I suggest people watch the 5 minute segment here:
    abc.net.au/news/2023-04-19/the

This is the blurb of the segment:

"For almost a century, antibiotics have been used around the world to treat bacterial infection, but scientists warn that over-use could raise the risk of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

The World Health Organization has listed the problem as one of the top ten global health threats facing humanity. New research has found antibiotic resistance in samples of meat taken from supermarket shelves. Jason Om reports."

Some brief thoughts on the story:

-I have to laugh at the 'ethical butcher' nomenclature, as it reminded me of 'humane slaughter'. #oxymoron
-It should be pointed out, because it wasn't directly stated in the news story, due perhaps to time constraints, but there is a reason that antibiotic use is so high and prevalent (60% of antibiotics used in Australia are for agriculture use - what a shocking amount!). And that is because animals, who are #sentient, conscious, and intelligent, are stuck in horrid conditions, surrounded by their own shit. 💩

Thank you to #abcAustralia for showing the report that was commissioned by #AnimalsAustralia. I hope it leads to more people choosing a kinder, nicer, way of life. 🌱

  10. "Pigs can get very panicked and they're not being mistreated but some are just nervy pigs."

No shit, how the hell would you feel if you knew you were about to be killed in a gas chamber. 🤬😤 This is the reason why #vegans get so annoyed with some people, with stupid comments like this.

The reason why gas chambers are used is of course because it's cheaper. Make no mistake, it has nothing to do with the thoughts or feelings of the pig in question.

  11. The news story about the #pigs being gassed has now been picked up by #TheGuardian, adding that #Woolworths and #Coles supply their pigs from the abattoir (AKA: slaughterhouse, nice try with the French origin word to soften the image) that these pigs were killed in the gas chambers (which are perfectly legal, they keep reminding us).

  12. Last night, me and my best friend watched 'Stunned', a short story on #ABC730 about how #pigs in #Australia are sent to gas chambers to be killed. They are then cut up and turned into food that normal people eat every single day. The scenes were horrific, and I applaud #abcAustralia for showing the footage before most kids bed time.

My best friend, who has been awakened to all the cruelty and suffering that is done to these pigs and other defenseless animals long before me, watched it with a numb sensation, whereas I imagine most people (that simply don't know that this is what happens every single day), may find the footage shocking. I couldn't help but sob and whimper, ashamed of myself for being a part of this system for so long.

I invite you all to watch it:

    abc.net.au/news/2023-03-27/ani

    The blurb says it well:

"Australians are a nation of meat lovers, but many of us never stop to think about how the animals we eat live or die. Tonight, we bring you never before seen footage that shows the method used to slaughter the vast majority of pigs in Australia.

It's hard to watch but also hard to ignore. As Lauren Day reports, none of what you're about to see is illegal except for the actions of those who filmed it and a warning, it contains footage some viewers may find confronting."

Thank you to ABC, #AnimalsAustralia, and #FarmTransparencyProject, for showing us this footage.
