  1. > A Washington Post investigation found that at least 50 law enforcement officers nationwide have been charged with or accused of misusing Flock’s network of over 120,000 AI license-plate cameras, most often to stalk women without their knowledge, including wives, girlfriends, exes, or new partners of exes. The investigation centers on Marci Bakely, a Georgia woman whose ex-boyfriend, police chief Michael Steffman, searched her license plate roughly 600 times over 13 months before being arrested on stalking and harassment charges; he died by suicide in April before facing trial.

Other documented cases include a Kansas police lieutenant fired for tracking his ex-wife and their children, a Florida officer who told his girlfriend “the police are already here” after threatening her with his gun, and a Wisconsin officer who used Flock to check whether his girlfriend had visited an abortion clinic. The Post found that Flock gives police departments wide latitude over oversight settings, with many agencies conducting minimal auditing, and in some cases officers continued using the system even after being flagged for misuse, while punishments varied widely due to a patchwork of state laws and no federal regulation. Flock has said abuse is “inevitable” given its scale but pointed to new voluntary “audit assistance” tools as a fix, while critics like the ACLU and Electronic Frontier Foundation argue basic safeguards, such as requiring a case number for every search, remain optional rather than mandatory.

  5. > Cuba experienced its second nationwide blackout in five days after a complete collapse of the national power grid, marking the island’s ninth nationwide outage since late 2024 and fourth this year. Officials attributed the worsening electricity crisis to aging infrastructure and severe fuel shortages, which Cuban authelorities say have been intensified by a U.S. fuel blockade imposed earlier this year. The repeated outages have compounded shortages of food, medicine, and drinking water, disrupting daily life and public services across the country. While the Cuban government blames U.S. sanctions for deepening the crisis, it has also introduced limited economic reforms as it struggles to stabilize the country’s deteriorating energy system.

  15. As a native and current Carolina girl, I am not at all surprised. Here's the thing: the state of North Carolina declined to officially participate in the Great American State Fair in Washington, DC. So ... who is responsible for the North Carolina display? And what reason would they for including a Confederate flag in the display video? I'm just sayin'. If it was not created *by* the state of North Carolina, to *represent* the state of North Carolina ... then who would want to create a video depicting the state flying a Confederate flag?

    > Mt. Olive Pickle Company has withdrawn from the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., after learning that North Carolina’s exhibit included a video briefly showing a Confederate flag. The company said it had not been aware the image would be part of the display and reaffirmed its commitment to “human dignity, opportunity, and freedom.” The controversy adds to a difficult start for the Trump-backed America 250 event, which has also faced low attendance, extreme heat that sent multiple people to the hospital, and several Democratic-led states declining to participate. The Confederate flag image was later removed from the exhibit, with organizers saying it appeared only briefly in a historical video about North Carolina’s past.

  20. And now, for some good news:

    > In a remarkable rescue, 43-year-old security guard Hernán Alberto Gil Flores was pulled alive from beneath nearly 30 feet of rubble eight days after Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes. International rescue teams from several countries spent more than 70 hours carefully tunneling through unstable debris while keeping him alive with water, food, medication, and fluids delivered through a hose. Gil was rescued conscious and in stable condition, with paramedics saying his vital signs remained normal throughout the operation. The rescue came as Venezuela’s earthquake death toll climbed above 2,295, with search and recovery efforts continuing across the hardest-hit areas.

  25. > The Department of Homeland Security has abandoned plans to convert a warehouse in Social Circle, Georgia, into a massive immigration detention center that would have housed up to 10,000 detainees and thousands of employees. Local officials announced they were informed the project was no longer being pursued, though it remains unclear whether the federal government will sell the property or repurpose it. The facility had faced strong opposition from residents and elected officials, including Georgia Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, who argued it would strain local infrastructure. The government had paid $128.5 million for the warehouse, more than four times its previous sale price, and local leaders hope it eventually returns to private ownership and the local tax base.

  30. Only in North Carolina would an immigration judge issue deportation papers for a dead man (said the native North Carolinian). I wish I could say I was surprised to read this.

    > A North Carolina immigration judge ordered the deportation of Levi Mendez-Maldonado, a 19-year-old Honduran immigrant who was murdered in 2024, even after his attorney informed the court of his death and provided police records documenting it. The judge ruled that he had failed to appear for his hearing and issued a removal order without mentioning his death in the decision, prompting criticism from immigration advocates who called the case an example of a dehumanizing and overly bureaucratic system. Mendez-Maldonado had been pursuing an asylum claim and had legal representation at the time of his death, while his homicide case remains unsolved.

  35. > European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Lithuania for emergency talks after a series of drone incidents in the Baltic region raised security concerns near the borders of Belarus and Russia. Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia have recently experienced airspace violations involving drones, including one incident that triggered NATO’s Baltic air-policing mission and another where a NATO jet shot down a drone in Estonian airspace. Baltic lears accuse Russia of using the incidents and disinformation campaigns to create divisions between Ukraine and its European allies. The visit will focus on solidarity with the Baltic states and strengthening European air defense and joint military capabilities amid growing fears over regional security threats.
