> In a remarkable rescue, 43-year-old security guard Hernán Alberto Gil Flores was pulled alive from beneath nearly 30 feet of rubble eight days after Venezuela’s devastating twin earthquakes. International rescue teams from several countries spent more than 70 hours carefully tunneling through unstable debris while keeping him alive with water, food, medication, and fluids delivered through a hose. Gil was rescued conscious and in stable condition, with paramedics saying his vital signs remained normal throughout the operation. The rescue came as Venezuela’s earthquake death toll climbed above 2,295, with search and recovery efforts continuing across the hardest-hit areas.
