  2. A lengthy, two-part interview with Trevor Dickinson (A-EON Technology) has been published.

In his answers to twenty questions, he mentions, for example, his financial support for the release of Amiga Forever and later C64 Forever as well as the realization that, in hindsight, he should not have pursued the development of the X5000 and A1222 Plus models simultaneously, as this left too few resources for the software side.

  4. "The fact that a man-made environmental disaster altered the upper mantle is a shocking illustration of the scale of the planetary transformations that mark the Anthropocene – the age in which humans are supposedly the central geological force on Earth. It would also seem to suggest that human activity could be affecting Earth’s interior in other ways. We need a new imagination for the whole Earth, linking the power of the deep planet with the vitality of the surface."

  8. "What human culture added was interpretation, prestige and normativity: it turned sentience into personhood, and personhood into something sacred. The crucial catalyst was the evolution of language, which, about 200,000 years ago, gave human beings new ways to describe inner life, attribute it to others, and elevate it into a shared ideal."

Without the aid of supplied air, Néry plunges into the ocean's hidden depths, revealing remarkable views of marine geology and wildlife around the globe. Seamlessly transitioning between a range of underwater realms, the video gives the impression that Néry's journey is taken in a single breath."

"Heidegger believed that we risked seeing the world only in terms of economic potential and efficiency – an undeveloped beach becomes no more than an opportunity to develop beachfront condos, for instance. He believed that, to prevent us from losing our humanity, we should look to artists, who represent another way of seeing – one that deepens our appreciation of the world rather than flattening it."

  16. "The wildlife refuge Izembek occupies a small portion of Alaska's Bering Sea coast. This stretch of wetlands, tundra and coastal lagoons supports a remarkable range of wildlife. For decades, it's also been at the centre of a dispute over a proposed road that would link two isolated villages by cutting through this federally protected wilderness. This cinematic short film produced by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology provides a portrait of the landscape, showing both its sublime beauty and the wildlife that rely on it, while prompting viewers to consider what could be lost."

  18. An Aeon essay through one of my favourite subjects: subversive literature, and whether it is actually subversive, by Charlie Ericson.

    aeon.co/essays/feel-the-burn-h

He discusses #Dante and #Milton, and a contemporary poet, Shane McCrae, and makes a distinction between subversion and #revolution.

It go me thinking about how literature's role in renewing #perception might transcend both of these.

  19. @leanderlindahl OK more clear choices.
Mind as you mentioned, a stable choice.
#openSUSE 3Tumbleweed or openSUSE #slowroll are good choices, especially
    with new hardware.
    openSUSE #Aeon, immutable GNOME based.
    #Kalpa same but KDE based.
    #Fedora #Silverblue or regular

Immutable or not depends on preference.

  20. RE: sauropods.win/@PeterFalkingham

Update to my #linux journey. After enjoying #Bazzite, but failing to solve HDR in games, and realizing the devs are quite antagonistic to Nvidia (mixed feelings here), I tried:

#nobara First update broke the system irrevocably.

#aeon Dev believes security chain is important, so impossible to install to external SSD or dual boot, so can't try it despite it looking like everything I want.

#CachyOS So much faff and needlessly technical setup (and I am a technical person)

    *sigh* ...linux...

  21. This week I contributed #OpenQA tests for #Aeon Desktop, the Linux distribution that I use on my laptop.

    openqa.opensuse.org/tests/5670

For now it’s just an initial set of tests to run the installer and first-boot process. I’ll add more tests in the future.

  22. One of the big things I like about the #UniversalBlue world is the openness -- especially the sharing of information.

Once I realized that #Bluefin and Bluefin LTS both updated on a weekly cadence, that made me want to switch from LTS to regular.

    docs.projectbluefin.io/changel

I wasn't so worried about changing kernels and packages as I was by the frequency of updates.

Specifically I wanted to get away from daily updates (#Tumbleweed-based #Aeon is VERY dynamic).

Weekly is more what I want.

  23. Until my previous laptop died, I had been running #Aeon Desktop for quite a few months, and had #Bluefin LTS on the second drive (after the previous SATA SSD died while running OpenBSD).

So with this new/old laptop (both are 2017 HP models -- the dead one all Intel, the current one Intel/Nvidia), I did a few days of testing and decided to run Bluefin for AMD/Intel (not LTS).

I'm not a hard-core developer. I would say I'm more of a dabbler. I'm way more of a writer and editor.

    1/2

  24. @jorge I just threw #Aeon Desktop (based on #OpenSUSE Tumbleweed packages) on this laptop.

You can't beat it for things like simplicity and boot speed, though Bluefin is still in the ballpark.

    Contrasting #Aeon and #Bluefin

Simple vs. batteries included (a whole lot more batteries, many optional)

    OpenSUSE world vs. Fedora/CentOS world

10+ images (via BTRFS) to fall back on vs. 2 images (unless you pin some)

Aeon auto-updates Distroboxes (by choice), Bluefin does not (also by choice)

    1/?

  25. I have been thinking about leaving the image-based (atomic/immutable) world and going with Ubuntu or Mint to easily get a signed kernel with the proprietary Nvidia driver.

But since #Bluefin and Bluefin LTS for AMD/Intel run so well, presumably b/c this 9-year-old laptop has a good-enough Intel GPU, I might be able to stick with the kinds of systems I've been running for the past few years, which include #Aeon Desktop and #Fedora #Silverblue and #Kinoite.

  26. I am doing tests on my old (2017) HP Intel/Nvidia laptop to see where I'm going to end up, #Linux-wise.

So far I've learned that my GPU (GeForce 940MX) is definitely not compatible with the current Nvidia driver (version 590).

For that reason, `modprobe nvidia` doesn't work in #Bluefin for Nvidia, and that process permanently takes up half a CPU core.

Bluefin for AMD/Intel runs just as well as Bluefin LTS. Definitely a contender.

I'm going to try #Aeon. Maybe it will run as well or better.

  27. The #Aeon piece linked to below argues that we still haven’t really come to grips with the implications of #entropy. I wrote earlier this year about a book that tries to do that in the context of #economics. Rightly or wrongly, I also dragged in #Trump. doncurren.blogspot.com/2025/09/entr...
