This week's #TuneTuesday theme is #UnexpectedWhiplash - songs that start one way and then change. There are so many great ones people are mentioning.
The first one that came to mind for me is Helmet's 'Wilma's Rainbow' from their 1994 record Betty. It's the intro track too, it start everything off.. Page is doing this kinda simple, chill guitar thing first, a couple times, and then the guitar, bass, and drums hit you full on in the fucking FACE. And then at the end, after the most insane solo you've ever heard, it has a false ending. Perfection. And then the REST of the record. 🤯

Woke up & had a hankering for 7Seconds- threw on my favorite of theirs. Ultimate wake-up music. 'Good to Go' is 1999 strong. Had this when it came out after I heard a promo, when I was 19 in '99. I like their earlier and later too, but I feel like this one is a sweet spot- a real masterpiece. Reissued in 2021!

I featured That Dog's 1997 masterpiece 'Retreat from the Sun' a year ago for #MusicWomenWednesday, but since I determined yesterday thanks to @HailsandAles's album of year posts that it's my favorite record of 1997, I'm re-upping it. I have it #NowPlaying, yet again. Anna Waronker is the damn coolest. And how many albums have violin solos on their badass singles? Okay then 🔥

#NowPlaying Intestine Baalism's masterpiece from 1997, 'An Anatomy of the Beast'. Easily one of the best death metal records of the 90s.

#NowPlaying one more Static-X for today -- this is another single from their platinum 1999 album Wisconsin Death Trip, but I never heard this one on the radio. This is track two on the record right after "Push It", and I like this one even MORE than "Push It"-- it STILL gives me chills to this day, one of my favorite damn songs. The fucking RIFFS. And WHAT a video. You really get to see where that soundclip is from 😂

#NowPlaying The first Static-X song I heard, on the radio, in 1999, when I was 19 -- "Push It". The sound. It's unforgettable. Not even one of my top favorite songs of theirs, but still so damn badass. And then to see the video- this one's one of the greats. There's a reason 'Wisconsin Death Trip' went platinum.

Today (September 3) in 1991, the Smithereens released Blow Up. It's a very '90s album, with some interesting songs on this one. Kinda almost adult contemporary in spots. But still a ton of rock, and the unreal 'If You Want the Sun to Shine'- one of my favorite songs ever. There's an instrumental version of it that's truly wild.

CD inserts ftw. I already have an old copy of this, of course, since it's my favorite album, but I found this MINTY CD copy of Too High to Die at thrift the other day, and as a rule, I had to grab it.

#NowPlaying - 1999's 'The Sebadoh' (by Sebadoh). A truly incredible album, and as I discovered today, among a TON of great albums that came out in 1999, this one is my top favorite of them. It's my second favorite Sebadoh album all the way through, after 1994's 'Bakesale'.

Last month I wrote a blog post about 'albums that made me' (https://spacetimetech.wordpress.com/2025/02/02/albums-that-made-me) and the other day I realized I missed one. It happens. I bet I'll think of more, too.
I know I've talked about this album here before, as last year was its 30th anniversary. Wildflowers was magical in 1994 when I was 14. It's just perfect. The single talks about rolling joints, songs about bees and cabins and forests, what's not to like. 😂 I saw Tom live once, and it's still one of my favorite memories. Tom was a real one. I've learned a couple of these songs over the years, they're some of my favorite to play. Tom was a master storyteller. That's why this one is #NowPlaying.
The full thing is here (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfGibfZATlGqE5Pom7EToq11VHoyvxukh), if you haven't heard it, or need to again.
Miss ya, Tom.

There were plenty of bass players before Les Claypool, and Les' stuff in and out of Primus has been incredible with some wild funk stuff, both more standard and not. But there was nothing that sounded like this before Frizzle Fry, and there won't ever be anything like this again. This shit is 100% original Claypool insanity, and we're lucky to have lived through this. The 1990s were fucking MAGICAL

Acid Eaters came out today (December 1) in 1993. Here's those Ramones boys doing their killer take on Jefferson Airplane. 🔥

Looks like I'm going through (my) #PerfectAlbums today. They're all subjective.
This one might not be some people's tastes. But to me, it's perfect.

I'm a Meat Puppets fanatic, seen em multiple times, love stuff from all the albums. But only a few of their records I find perfect. I'm not big on their super early stuff. Bits and pieces.
I dig 'Monsters' from 1989 fully, but it's not an 'anytime' kind of record for me. So the first Meat Puppets record I find perfect - an 'anytime' album - is 1991's 'Forbidden Places'.
Has some real alt-country on this one (as most Puppets records do, it's not much, among the blazing guitars). From the first seconds and minutes of "Sam" - I mean, they still play this live. It is WILD. They Might Be Giants covered "Whirlpool". This album is rad, man. From "No Longer Gone" (which was my username on Twitter for many years) 🤣 to the title track, just legendary. Underrated?

Since @wendigo reminded me this year is the 30th anniversary of Tom Petty's MASTERPIECE 'Wildflowers', I figured it's time I finally post this.
I want to talk about 1994 for a minute. I was 14. They say the music that comes out and that you like in your teens sticks with you for the rest of your life, and I've definitely found that to be true. I was thinking about that the other day, and then I started looking at the records that came out that year.
1994 was a WILD year. Kurt Cobain died (on my birthday, and I was a big Nirvana fan at the time). But the year was RIDICULOUS for music and it produced some legendary masterpieces of albums that have stayed with me my whole life like friends, guiding my way.
Here are these MAGICAL fucking albums, in the order they were released in 1994. And this isn't even ALL the great albums released in '94. Just my favorites. It's wild to be alive in a time that all of this came out. I can't imagine having to write a best albums of 1994 back then. Check this list. 🤯
Jar of Flies (January)
Too High to Die (January)
Dookie (February)
Mellow Gold (March)
The Downward Spiral (March)
Superunknown (March)
A Date With the Smithereens (April)
Weezer (blue, May)
Purple (June)
Betty (June)
Same As it Ever Was (June)
Bakesale (August)
Stranger Than Fiction (September)
Chocolate and Cheese (September)
Monster (September)
Pisces Iscariot (October)
Wildflowers (November)
I mean, what a LIST.

I'm not usually big on remasters (unless it's a reMIX -- reMASTERS don't really do anything extra for the recordings) but this 'Wildflowers & All the Rest' deluxe version they put out in 2020 one has all kinds of extra songs (including home recordings and live stuff), so I'm going through it today and (of course) it's DAMN good. Yet another amazing record from 1994.
Tom was such a genius. RIP 🌼

Surprised I missed saying something on the exact date (Jan 25, 1994) but 30 years ago as of that date, my favorite *album* of all time was released. The Smithereens may be my favorite *band* overall & I love their albums, but my favorite album is Too High to Die by the Meat Puppets.

1994 was a great year for music. Superunknown, Jar of Flies, Downward Spiral, just everything else amazing from that year. Too High is incredible. I can always play it, any time of day or night. It's my teen years imprinting my music tastes for the rest of my life, and they have.

Today of course marks the 30th anniversary of nine inch nails' legendary record The Downward Spiral. This masterpiece of an album was released March 8, 1994, and was a pretty intense thing for 14 year old me to hear.
This photo is from Instagram - Trent just posted it, saying what 28 year old him had to say still excites him but breaks his heart. It's a dark album, man. All the pigs are still lined up.

Beck released the masterpiece Mellow Gold 30 years ago today (March 1) in 1994. I was 14. It's still one of my favorite albums. Mellow Gold is actually Beck's third album, but the one most folks are familiar with because of Loser. TONS of great songs on this one. My favorite might be Beercan, which I know well because I used to cover it. 🤣🔥
