This home taped #OtisRedding & #JimiHendrixExperience #8TrackCartridge eBay-find initially had me stumped. Where oh where had I seen those long legs on the original tape label peeking out from underneath at the bottom? Then I flashed on it: it's the Fool On The Hill album by #SergioMendesAndBrasil66, that easy-listening warhorse of conservative household music collections all across the US in the early 70s.

Finally, Sergio M. is going to good use.

(Also note: this taper went and split both "Satisfaction" and "Like a Rolling Stone" across programs - proof he/she was a truly sensible 8-track listener)

#8TrackMind was a neat zine started in the early 90s by #RussForster, ostensibly to bring together the #8TrackTape community in all it's eccentric, nostalgic, and perverse varieties. For years it was the only regular resource for information about 8-tracks, and was the only place that jokes about that dreaded KER-CHUNK! sound could reliably be grokked. The initial run ended in 2000, but a lo-budge film documentary followed, and I understand Russ revived the mag proper a few years back. While this has been reissued before, here it's extended with bonus tracks and with the original cover artwork restored - hence definitive. Truly, this is my/your/our #Texas.

In the broad wake of #Deodato's 1973 smash-hit "Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)", STAR-PHASE was one of many studio groups (made up of "Tommy, Steve, Carolyn, Ron and Stephanie") who tried to cash in with disco-fied, instrumental versions of sci-fi movie themes from the day. They weren't at all successful and only ever got released on #8TrackTape. This means even today, grizzled hip-hop beat hunters haven't plundered their recordings. Yet.

Were the Connecticut #HardcorePunk band #ViolentChildren the first to release a self-consciously retro #8Track release? I do believe so. This was originally issued in December 1988. Mass production of 8-track tapes had ceased by then, so each tape had to be duped/hand-spliced on to blank, dead stock cartridges by the label owner himself. It was a perverse joke; what self-respecting punk ever owned an 8-track player?

Other bands would latch on to this idea in the ensuing decade - notably #SpinalTap, who released a promo 8-track of their 1992 "Break Like The Wind" album. But for a moment let's acknowledge the foresight of Violent Children. United Nutmeg forever!

It's #8TrackTuesday again, and today I'm pondering why a sizeable chunk of early 70s #8Track tapes replaced the usual LP cover art with crappy stock images.

Were these less-than legit releases? Was it simply cheaper to license the music, sans artwork? Or was it assumed 8-track listeners just didn't give a shit?

Today (the day the world will one day look back on as the inaugural #8TrackTuesday) I present to you with perhaps the trippiest #8TrackCartridge of all time: Todd Clark & The Stars "Deathguard Sampler" from 1976.

Hardly any independent/DIY artists took advantage of 8-tracks during their heyday - certainly, none as noisy, electronic, & weirdly downtuned as Todd. While some of these tracks ended up on a retrospective 2xCD on the #Anopheles label in 2005 (including his twisted version of #TheRollingStones' "2000 Light Years From Home") otherwise we're left guessing as to why the hell Todd chose this format on which to issue his first home recordings. But we're so happy he did! This is the glistening jewel in the melted heap of plastic coating the backseat of your dad's beat-up Chevy Impala.
