Was reminded of the 1988 IMAX film 'Beavers' I saw when I was 8 - it's still so vivid to me in my mind (VERY few things from when I was 8 are) - to see them huge, up close, on a giant screen as they swam around, crunched logs & worked was MINDBLOWING for an 8 year old kid. It's the first full length documentary made about one type of creature! (Trailer: https://inv.tux.pizza/YDwRmBCANvE?t=1)

If you've seen it, you know, and if you haven't and you dig animals, you'll probably want to find this one and check it out.

GRUNT! THE WRESTLING MOVIE (’85): Extremely low rent attempt to cash in on 80s pro wrestling fever, using generally B- and C-list wrestlers with Z-list actors. Believe it or not, if you make it past the first painfully cringey fifteen minutes, it’s not all bad. The wrestling scenes are pretty well done, and Wally George’s gimmick was a hoot. Just ignore the “plot”, or the fact that the characters the plot is built around never actually say a word! #80sfilms

THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN (’81): Major points for creativity here, as supposedly “unfilmable” novel is put on screen quite successfully, retaining its meta approach but in a different, yet no less creative, fashion. Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep play forbidden lovers in two different timelines. Streep a complete stunner with that flowing red hair. Photography differences in the two timelines didn’t go unnoticed; Victorian story sumptuously filmed, helped ensure it “felt” Victorian. #80sfilms

THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY (’80): Top-notch crime thriller with mob boss Bob Hoskins (!) about to close deal of a lifetime, until a mysterious series of murders starts it all unraveling. This plays out very differently than typical, and Hoskins does a great job conveying the emotional and mental roller coaster as it unfolds. Eddie Constantine as the American a nice touch. That final scene, and that score that punctuates the big moments throughout including that one, just great great stuff. #80sfilms

BLUE VELVET (’86): I don’t know what it says about society- or maybe it’s something about me?- that this was somehow not as shocking as I expected? Then again, I’ve seen a lot of Bunuel. Very neo-noir vibes. Terrific cast, the four leads all memorable in very different ways, though Hopper’s manic insanity takes the cake. Won’t soon forget the woman dancing on the car to Roy Orbison as Kyle brutally beaten, or Dern’s gasping-for-air horror face as she hears “you put your disease in me”. #80sfilms

CRIMES OF PASSION (’84): Well, this is a weird one. Maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised from what I read since it’s a Ken Russell, but… this was my first Ken Russell. Anyway, a trashy but strangely highly compelling watch. Kathleen Turner is highly strung businesswoman by day, hooker by night. Much exploration of her dual nature as she falls for married man, tries to avoid psycho “minister” Anthony Perkins. Love all the neon flooding the night scenes. #eroticthrillers #80sfilms

My conclusion so far based on limited sample size: people on #Instagram seem to be a lot more adventurous than #Mastodon 😆
