#808day brought a bunch of gems; here's this year's haul from Japan -- including a DIY D-Beam-style controller! (details of how they built that hack, too!)

Happy 8/08 day to all who celebrate!
I don't have anything of my own to share right now, but this was nice to see:

Ah yes, it's 808 day today too. Loads of classic tunes were made with the Roland TR-808 but one of the first that comes to mind is Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)". They really went all-out with the cowbell! It's a song that reminds me of being a kid too, so nice memories with this one.

Today, August 8, is 808. “808 Day” used to be fun because 808 is Hawaiʻiʻs area code (telephone dialing code). Tourists could buy cool t-shirts with slogans like “straight outta 808.” But sadly the Lahaina wildfire not only happened, but happened on August 8, 2023. Since then August 8 has been something like Hawaiʻiʻs September 11, a sad reminder of unnecessary tragedy. Time will heal, but for now itʻs still tough. #Hawaii #808day

Another #808day. Here is a setup I use occasionally, Roland TR-808 paired with my Juno-6, the Hohner Pianet-N in front of it all and a Kawai SX-240 on top (latter not visible), and recording to my Tascam 244 4-track machine. The Juno-6 was my first synth ever, bought used in '87.
Interestingly and coincidentally, the visible part is what Nik #Kershaw used for his first album(demo)s. I took this pic because not unlikely I'll have the chance to meet him this month and I'd love to ask for comment.

"The Roland TR-808 was officially in production for just two years—from 1980 to 1982. Around 12,000 units were manufactured [...]
The TR-808 started to look like its time had come and gone. But ironically, its premature demise was merely the beginning."

“…we synthesizer engineers couldn’t help feeling that simply recording and playing back acoustic sounds was too easy—it didn’t require craftsmanship. Because Roland is a synthesizer maker, I suggested that we should develop a drum synthesizer. Each instrument would have its own synthesis method, allowing users to create sounds to their taste, rather than just realistic ones. Kakehashi-san agreed with this idea.”— Kikumoto Tadao, lead developer of the Roland TR-808 #808Day https://mastodon.social/@pkirn/114992843566760542

"Roland’s Tadeo Kikumoto on 808, part by part: the ukiyo-e drum machine"
I was lucky enough to be on the writing team for the epic 400-page Roland tome at Bjooks.
To celebrate #808day we've got that book in a deal for free with their subs, plus an excerpt on CDM of an interview with Roland's legendary Mr. Tadeo Kikumoto.

No new #808day content from me as I've been road tripping, but here's one I prepared (much) earlier:

Feat. one of the Goldbaby 808 kits on my Elektron Model:Samples, a TD-3 going through an analogue delay for the Acid lines and my trusty Grandstand talking computer on vocals.
