"Sub-millimeter resolution fMRI images were obtained from early visual cortex in six subjects performing visual imagery of four different letter shapes" [...] "provided first evidence in favor of detailed topographic organization." #7T #fMRI
"the topographic organization of mental imagery closely resembles that of perception. This lends support to the idea that mental imagery is quasiperceptual not only in terms of its subjective experience but also in terms of its neural representation"

Mapping space in the blind brain https://data.snf.ch/grants/grant/213653 by Petra Vetter, project running 2024-2029; "Recent evidence [...] suggests that the 'visual' cortex in people blind from birth is similarly organised than in the sighted and used for sound representation"; #7T #fMRI #neuroscience
"Understanding how space representation works in blindness can significantly advance the development of visual prostheses and aids for blind and visually impaired individuals."

On International Epilepsy Day I would like to draw your attention to this Comparison of Clinical 7T vs 3T MRI for #Epilepsy.
In their photo essay Emmanuel C. Obusez, M.D., et al. (Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, USA) show that #7T #MRI may provide increased conspicuity of subtle lesions at 7T that are much less conspicuous at lower field strengths in patients with epilepsy. These diagnostic advantages can substantially alter patient care. Often people ask what the benefit of ultra-high field #MRI at 7 Tesla (#7T) for #cognitive #neuroscience is. A common answer is the ability to scan at submillimetre resolutions to uniquely visualize the mesoscopic organization scale of the human brain, i.e., columnar and laminar organizations.
Though certainly true and innovative, we assert a much more readily available and more powerful gain for cognitive neuroscience: gray-matter optimized (GMO) functional MRI. Recent findings demonstrate that when spatial resolution is optimized to specifically sample gray matter, this brings the information-processing characteristics of local neuronal populations in the living human brain into clear view.
GMO fMRI is the most readily available tool for cognitive neuroscientists, and it has proven to be the most productive tool in the last few years. GMO fMRI can be performed with whole-brain coverage, including cerebellum, and analyzed using well-established analytical tools. This high degree of accessibility combined with the very high level of attainable data quality makes GMO fMRI a very compelling strategy for cognitive neuroscience.

Perceptual expectations and false percepts generate stimulus-specific activity in distinct layers of the early #visual #cortex https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.04.13.488155v2 #7T layer-specific #fMRI of #V1 and #V2. #neuroscience
"results reveal a feedforward mechanism underlying false percepts, reflected by spontaneous stimulus-like activity in the input layers of the visual cortex, independent of top-down perceptual expectations."

😩 third migration, but feeling finally home on #Neuromatch server 🥳 #reintroduction
Why neuroenergetics is 🤙 brain stuff?
In my lab, we study the #neuroenergetics of the human connectome with multiscale brain imaging.
We have so many unsolved questions 😳:
How is energy distributed across the cortex and spent on higher cognitive functions? What are most expensive signaling pathways and mechanisms? My lab is split between FAU and TUM (two best ranked German universities in case u didn‘t know yet 😅) and we use the following neuroimaging methods:
- functional and quantitative imaging on 7T MRI at FAU
- quantitative, molecular imaging on an integrated PET/MRI-scanner at TUMThe group at TUM is funded by an ERC-grant and i will start a new lab as Full Professor for multiscale neuroimaging at FAU in 2023.
