  1. When I joined Mastodon two years ago, the #7Books #7BooksToKnowMe hashtags were a thing, and I had fun compiling my list. How do I choose only SEVEN?!? At the time I declared that my list was by no means permanent. With that said, I feel an update is past due, especially since one of the authors from my original list turned out to be... problematic. I'm posting the original list, as well as the current version (images to save characters, with #AltText of course).

  2. Saw the tag #7BooksToKnowMe and #7Books and couldn't resist - and me being me it won't be just 7 books but 7 series:

    - Culture series, especially Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks
    - Sprawl trilogy by William Gibson
    - The Elric Saga by Michael Moorcock
    - The Sandman by Neil Gaiman (yes, it's a comic, but still counts)
    - Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
    - Dune series by Frank Herbert (yours truly is a completionist, so including all the KJA & BH stuff).

  3. Ok, let's do this. Geez, I love this.

  24. @JustSunny Of course! I don't own the #. There are several variations:

    #7Books
    #7BooksToKnowMe
    #7SongsToKnowMe
    #7MoviesToKnowMe
    Plus others.

The # is used to identify topics of interest. For example: #jazz or #woodworking.

Oh boy. The only way I could think to narrow this down was to list books I’ve read more than once ( so, lots are missing).

    In no meaningful order:
    1. The Little Prince
    2. Cryptonomican
    3. Neuromancer
    4. The Once & Future King
    5. White Noise
    6. Santiago: A Myth of the Far Future
    7. Tie- LOTR, Dune, and Wheel of Time series

  27. Ok is tough right, only picking 7 I mean! I don't read as much as I should, but here are the first 7 which came to mind:

    - @neilhimself
    -
    -
    -
All the Light We Cannot See -
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell -
    -

Honestly I could have filled all 7 choices with books though 🙂

  28. Joining the challenge! Tried to pick seven that had a big effect on my life, not necessarily my favorites.

    1. Foundation by Isaac Asimov - the first "grown-up" novel I ever read, it always stays with me for its themes of trying to understand history at a grand scale and use that understanding to make a difference.

    2. Personal History by Katharine Graham - even more than books by journalists, the memoir by The Washington Post publisher made me believe in the power of the press and transparency. I did not know it at the time, but it helped me understand that life goes on after a loved one's suicide.

    3. War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning by Chris Hedges - deepened my instinctual attraction to pacifism and showed me how powerful a cultural critique can be

    4. The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton - at the time it was one one of the books that made me want to be a Catholic. I no longer possess that desire but Merton's story is still a model of spiritual seeking.

    5. The Expressiveness of the Body by Shigehisa Kuriyama - one of the first books I read in graduate school and still an untouchable ideal of scholarship. A book I recommend to everyone to understand how history of science and medicine can change your perspective.

    6. Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf - For me, this book represents all the ways my wife has shaped my life. Like Woolf and all my other favorite novels, she sees people completely and has the type of sadness and compassion that engenders.

    7. Parenting Outside the Lines by Meghan Leahy - I felt like this book gave me permission to be a dad and still be myself with all my flaws. And it made me take Buddhism, Taoism, and Zen more seriously as ideas I could actually apply in my life, not just esoteric traditions.
