Watching Doctor Who #73Yards Is that the Luke Skywalker island from the last trilogy? #DoctorWho
-
We finally started watching the latest series of Doctor Who yesterday. Just now watched the episode "73 Yards" which has been the best of the first four, bizarrely featuring very little Doctor at all. We particularly liked the scenes in the pub at the start. Welsh people being incredibly rude to English visitors? Ah, yes, that takes us back to our times in Wales.

CW: Doctor Who 73 yards spoilers
Don't get me wrong, I loved #73Yards from a cinematographic standpoint. I also don't have a problem with not all mysteries being resolved. In general. However, not all mysteries are alike. There are central mysteries that have to make sense, to make the story work. And the twist/reveal in the end (I've read several theories), does not.

"Ruby, oh... the rocks and the water, it never ends – the war between the land and the sea."
A not so hidden hint in Dr Who episode’73 yards’ that a spin-off is imminent.

After a somewhat promising first part, the season finale for #DrWho, #EmpireOfDeath was another monumental letdown. Zero plot, incredibly unsatisfying resolution, rubbish use of a classic baddy, and poorly handled adoption scenario, mostly disregarding Ruby’s true mother: the one that raised her.
#73Yards and #DotAndBubble aside (and some elements of #DevilsChord), this was a really weak season. Bad enough that I’m not eagerly looking forwards to more #DoctorWho. Which is really quite sad.

@TheDarcBird I feel the plot for #TheDevilsChord was super thin, but I teally enjoyed #JinkxMonsoon as the baddy. Neatly unhinged. #73Yards and #DotAndBubble were great, but felt a big drop in #Rogue. The Rogue character felt really flat and random, plot again didn’t really make sense, and generally I’m not big on the Doctor getting romantically entangled. At least without good buildup! Takes away from the ‘otherness’. I know many seemed to like it though.

CW: DW, 73 Yards spoilers
Rewatching #73Yards, and I just love it so much. It's very much a modern fairytale, IMHO. Time loops are one of my favorite tropes.

This week, Simon and Eugene look at the 2024 season Doctor Who episode #73Yards and discuss whether a reset makes an episode worthless, whether Doctor Who is really an anthology series, and they identify the influences of Nigel Kneale, Years and Years, 2001, An American Werewolf in London, and The Wild, Wild West.

CW: Doctor Who - 73 Yards
Doctor starts the episode stepping on a mine again. He's always causing trouble. Ruby stepped on a butterfly in Ep1 too. Will every episode start with stepping on a butterfly/mine
No idea how Ruby traveled back in time at the end of her life. Just spooky magic I guess. More spooky this season. It's okay, you literally can't have hard-sci fi about a time-traveler because time-travel is impossible, so it's fine to have witches and werewolves and yeti and loch monsters.
It was like a Doctor Who version of RTD's previous "Years and years" eh? That was pretty great too.
Kate Lethbridge-Stuart running away even from second hand contact with the distant lady was the scariest part. You can't win if she's running like that.
Amy Pond's aging makeup when she had to live a whole life abandoned by the doctor was done better than Ruby Sundae who just looked 20 in different wigs till she was 80.
The 2060s don't look as futuristic as they might do they? Still just using black-slates for a tricorder then.

CW: Doctor Who - 73 Yards
Hm. I'm torn on this one.
On the one hand, it's the first of RTD's episodes I think has wholly *worked* as an episode... but on the other, that's because it's RTD not really writing *Doctor Who* - like a lot of his more successful stuff in genre, it feels more like the weirder end of British SF&F TV - your *Sapphire and Steel*s and *The Prisoner*s in different senses - than Dr Who. #doctorwho #73yards

This week, we find ourselves completely unable to connect and terrified of being abandoned by everyone we’ve ever cared about. Fortunately there’s an excellent episode of Doctor Who to cheer us up.
-
I will admit I vaguely noticed the in picture credits in 73 Yards but was more than engaged enough not to be bothered by the lack of a title sequence, which is very rare but not unprecedented†

CW: Doctor Who mild spoilers
Am I the only getting “Impossible Girl” vibes from Susan Twist’s repeated appearances? #DoctorWho #73Yards

As much as I enjoyed this evening's #DoctorWho (& I did enjoy it) I can't help but feel that in 2024 there's little chance that a Brit of Ruby's age would be that familiar with using yards as measurement. #73Yards #DrWho

The first three Ncuti Gatwa episodes of #DoctorWho didn’t do much for me. I was very much “meh”. They were “fine” I guess. But left me kind of flat.
But both #Boom and #73Yards had me locked to my TV. Absolutely excellent. More of that please.

Damn, that was some seriously incredible television. #doctorwho #73yards

Ich glaube, so ratlos hat mich noch nie eine Folge gemacht. Ich weiß noch nicht mal, ob ich die jetzt gut oder schlecht fand - weil, was ist da jetzt passiert? Und warum?
