In all the excitement this week I forgot to post: Abhinav's paper on dust transport across #comet #67P ☄️has been published! This came out of an excellent week spent working with @[email protected] and @[email protected] at #Nice observatory www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Final day of the #Rosetta #DustWorkshop. Very nice social dinner (and drinks) last night, but today is going to be a struggle! I will be presenting my #67P thermal modelling results just before lunch, and then leading a spinoff discussion this afternoon - hopefully I can stay awake! #PlanetSci

More pics from day one of the #DustWorkshop. In which I learned of the existence of Hydrodium, saw the lab, acquired a new mini #comet #67P, and am now back in the hotel watching #Arsenal 🙂

Working for the week up at the Observatorie de côté d'Azur with @spacemarschall.net, and Sam Birch and Abhinav Jindal on some #comet ☄️ #67P related stuff. Great views over Nice 🇫🇷, and we've already used the blackboard! And played a game of Molkky, a tradition up here for some reason 😅

Just presented my work to the #CometInterceptor SWT on.. you guessed it, thermophysical modelling of #comet #67P ☄️

So, day one of the #Rosetta #DustMeeting. Venue is the Marine science institute inside the #Venice #Arsenale (appreciated as an arsenal fan!). I will be presenting my work on #67P thermophysical modelling after the fist coffee break

The first results from Rosetta had a really high D/H that required 67P to form far away from the Sun. This was confusing! #67P is different from other Jupiter family comets that have lower D/H ratios. It also didn't have a lot of CO and N2 ice, which form at really cold temperatures too.

#Rosetta was an ESA mission to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (#67P). It was an amazing international mission with teams from all over Europe and #NASA. Rosetta launched in 2004 rendezvoused with 67P in 2014, and ended by landing on the comet surface in 2016 🧪🔭🧵2/n https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Rosetta

On November 12th the Philae lander would separate, descend down and land on the surface of a comet for the first time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H08tGjXNHO4 #67P #Churyumov #Gerasimenko #Philae

Graduate student position in cometary science at TU Braunschweig @tubraunschweig
The Institute of Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics at the TU #Braunschweig is seeking to fill a three-year researcher position (75% part-time, suitable to work towards obtaining a #PhD degree) in cometary science. The successful applicant will analyse data from #ESA's #Rosetta mission to study the emission and dynamics of decimetre-sized debris from #comet #67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

in the #arxiv this morning: Splitting of Long-Period Comet C/2018 F4 (PANSTARRS), by Man-To Hui and co-authors. The comet has two components splitting at a relative speed of 3.00±0.18 m/s. Pre-split nucleus might have consisted of two lobes resembling the ones of 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko.

@UkrainianAstronomyProject
This made me reflect over something I believe bears highlighting. Before Russias illegal invasion of Ukraine, media hardly ever made distinctions between Soviet, Russian or Ukrainian heritage. I can't remember a single instance when it was reflected that the naming of the Comet 67p, the target of the ESAs Rosetta spacecraft, was discovered by and named after astronomers of Ukrainian origin.
Instead it unfortunately fell under the blanket as being "named after Russian scientists".
It's important to differentiate this and not let the cultural importance of Ukraine get diminished. The culture war waged to delete Ukrainian heritage is more difficult to put your finger on but is becoming more and more obvious that it's been happening long before February 2022.
To prevent this kind of misappropriation to continue we have to start correcting others when that mistake is made.

The #Rosetta visit to a #comet in the last decade keeps giving ... with two new papers out tonight: "Multi-instrument analysis of #67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko coma particles: COPS-GIADA data fusion" (https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.10535) and "Cometary dust collected by MIDAS on board Rosetta. On Dec 7 the full set of OSIRIS images (56 TB!) was again delivered to ESA's Planetary Science Archive. No new images but substantially improved scientific calibration and new derived products. The Rosetta OSIRIS scientific imaging system's legacy of its voyage to comet #67P onboard the ESA Rosetta mission.
It will now be ingested into the public archive for everyone to use. Looking forward to what you will make out of it.

Fun fact of the day.
Today I found out that @[email protected] built the possibly coolest instrument on a spacecraft: the harpoon that @[email protected] used to anchor itself to comet #67P, visited by @[email protected].

@65dBnoise speaking about impressions: when I see such cracked larger rocks, I can't help but remember the fallen, regularly fractured boulders of #67P imaged by #ESARosetta
Same but different 🙃

8 years today since Philae detached from the #ESARosetta probe towards #67P
Here's my #PlanetArtober 2019 repro of this amazing view of the probe and the comet, as seen from the CIVA instrument on Philae days before the separation. Original photo:
