The fifth of November,
The gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot! -
In the early days, gunpowder had to be made by hand, grinding up the ingredients in a pestle and mortar to make a powder called "serpentine". Needless to say this was dangerous work, because just one spark and the whole lot could go up. Adding a liquid, like Water or Wine to the mixture would reduce the risk of sparks.

Guy the Gorilla arrived at London Zoo from Cameroon on this date in 1947, at the age of 18 months. He was named after Guy Fawkes, but was upset by the noise of Fireworks on his first day in London.
