#1 in my #AOTY2022
Gospel 'The Loser'
Screamo, wall of sound - but it's so much more than that... intense, heavy, yet melodic, with retro keys and a hint of jazz fusion. My album of the year, and it had been since I first heard it on release.

I've really agonised over which to make the final entry on my #5albums22. So many good albums this year, it's been hard to pick stand-outs, but I'm going for…
'As I Try Not To Fall Apart' by #WhiteLies – for me their best work for years.
The song below, #BreakdownDays, one of my favourite individual songs this year, was released as a single and included as a bonus track on the album

Each year, there's always one piece of music that truly resonates with me.
DECAS by @smercatante_
is that album for 2022.This phenomenal record is basically a 100 x better version of my studio output and the sounds in my head.
Stunning💥

"I Don't Know My Words" by ex-#Yeasayer singer Anand Wilder. A really beautiful piece of work; an excellent first solo outing.

Black Midi 'Hellfire'
These guys just get better with every release. This album is bonkers in ways that can only be understood as raw talent - there's nothing like them; unique.

#3 in my #AOTY2022
Imperial Triumphant 'Spirit Of Ecstasy'
This defies convention. It is metal, but with huge slabs of doom laden bass and percussion, experimental jazz patterns and polyrythms.
All my boxes ticked.
Sorry, it's not in the slightest bit Christmassy.

Moving in more pop focused circles for The Line Is A Curve, the album still sticks with what makes them great. This album is on a par with Let Them Eat Chaos for me #5Albums22

#4 in my #AOTY2022
GNOD 'Hexen Valley'
Psyche from Salford.
The power drone magnificence of the track 'Spotlight' is definitely worth 15 minutes of your listening time.

It's not metal!
This talented group of young people have really pushed the boundaries with this album. Creative, ambitious and reminiscent of Stereolab; which I would suggest is a very good thing.

#6 in my #AOTY2022
Voïvod 'Synchro Anarchy'
Still releasing amazing prog metal material and maintaining their technically faultless reputation some 40 years after forming.
#5albums22 -
Dry Cleaning push their sound forward on this album, whilst continuing to have Florence's deadpan delivery of lines throughout. Possibly as good as their debut, but still it's a great listen #5Albums22

Can an album shoot straight into the top 5 after one listen? This is absolutely incredible! Not a bad run of albums from Little Simz! #5Albums22

#7 in my #AOTY2022

Third of my #5albums22…
"Fire Doesn't Grow On Trees" by The #BrianJonestownMassacre #BJM
Will @Antonnewcombe & co. ever stop knocking out brilliant music? Seems unlikely, and this year's album is up there with their very best of recent times. Love it!

Viagra Boys 'Cave World'
Europe's answer to Warmduscher, this is the Swedish post-punk outfit's third studio album, and could be their best.

Bob Vylan Presents The Price of Life is a state of the nation address. Angry and justifiably so, the album mixes grime and punk for a vital listen #5Albums22
-
Ali by Vieux Farks Touré and Khruangbin is an album that you can completely lose yourself in. It's an absolute joy to listen to #5Albums22
-
Another shift sonically for Angel Olsen, but another very strong album from her #5Albums22
-
Loose Future by Courtney Marie Andrews is a lot warmer record than her previous one, but still packs a punch #5Albums22
-
Autofiction by Suede is a pretty exciting ride! It's certainly a contender for #5Albums22
-
The Smile is a strong contender for me this year. Another really interesting listen throughout from Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood, with the help of Tom Skinner. #5Albums22
-
Reeling by The Mysterines is a real statement of intent from the band on their debut. A thrilling ride for 40 odd minutes #5Albums22

Top albums of 2022 - #1
The Burning Hell - Garbage Island
I first saw the Burning Hell back in 2017 in a packed wooden hut in Locharon with about 18 other people. I was impressed. Here's the best crossover ornithology/apocalypse rock album ever made, and probably my most listened album of 2022.

Another excellent album from the Big Moon with Here Is Everything. The album built on the previous one musically, with some great tunes to match #5Albums22

Adwaith are my discovery of the year thanks to @[email protected]. Grungey, poppy with ethereal vocals throughout, Bato Mato is a really great listen. Probably not top 5, but would be in my top 10 of the year #5Albums22
-
First Aid Kit will always be a special band for me and this album is gloriously uplifting. It really shows the Söderberg sisters delving more into pop/classic rock, but keeping to their Americana heart. Definitely a contender for #5Albums22
-
Top albums of 2022 - #2
Kokoroko - Could We Be More
I shit on algorithmic music discovery a lot but I definitely discovered Kokoroko thanks to Youtube recommendation sometime in 2018. This long awaited album is everything we all hoped it would be.
(As much as it pains me to include a London band in place of a Manchester band in a top 5 of anything :-)

Memoirs Of Hi Tech Jazz
For all the usual suspects on here who'll dig....
Inspired by revolutionary
efforts against
hegemonies in Detroit, and
in Black locales around the
world, Memoirs of Hi-Tech
Jazz is a sound score
evocative of that resistance.
