Missisquoi River almost flooding, July 12, 2023. Major flood impacts were in the 2 watersheds south of the Missisquoi, but the water was still impressively high and turbid here as we passed by. #52LakeChamplain #Vermont #flood #flooding #floods

Otter Creek Falls in Vergennes, #Vermont. Otter Creek is the longest waterway entirely contained in Vermont. From Vergennes to Lake Champlain, Otter Creek is fully navigable and Vergennes was a shipyard in the early 1800s. #WaterfallWednesday #waterfall #52LakeChamplain

It’s been another busy week, but highlights including some parts of the #UVM campus off my normal routes. One spot rewarded me with this vista of #Burlington and #LakeChamplain. I love these everyday reminders of this amazing watershed we are working to protect. #52LakeChamplain #Vermont

Button Bay State Park, #Vermont was perfect for a low key family stroll on a cloudy Sunday. I imagine this point could be rather more crowded in hot weather. #52LakeChamplain #52hikes #12

Spent the week in Nevada/California, which is beautiful, but I’m so happy to be home sweet home in the Lake Champlain basin. Here two views from my flights. Outbound I had glorious views of Malletts Bay in Colchester, #Vermont. Inbound, I got to see the Charlotte-Essex ferries at work. #52LakeChamplain

The last few days have been a reminder that our beautiful #LakeChamplain is not insulated from the rest of the world. Wildfire smoke from Quebec has turned our skies orange and hazy and led to air quality alerts. At times, #Burlington hasn't even been able to clearly see the #Adirondacks across the lake. Hoping sprinkles of #rain last night and today help us out a bit.
Not my photo for this week's #52LakeChamplain (credit MyNBC5 via NWS Burlington)..

Yesterday, my family paid a visit to Fort Ticonderoga in Lake Champlain's South Basin. Visiting the fort taught us about the strategic importance of the lake during the French and Indian War & Revolutionary War. Hydrologically, the La Chute River, which drains Lake George, empties into Champlain at Ticonderoga. This view is from Mt. Defiance looking north toward the fort, with the river mouth to its south. #52LakeChamplain #Ticonderoga #LaChute #NewYork #Vermont #LakeChamplain #RevolutionaryWar

Happy to be home in #Vermont! Stopped to get this view of the Lake Champlain #bridge. At this point the lake narrows to 1/2 mile, so it has been an important crossing point for centuries #52LakeChamplain

This week’s #52LakeChamplain view comes from the top of South Boquet mountain in Essex, #NY. #ChamplainValley farmlands, the blue waters of #LakeChamplain, and the distant peaks of #Vermont’s #GreenMountains. All as a reward for a lovely family #hike. #Adirondacks #NewYork

This #dam view is <500 m downstream of Monday’s #52LakeChamplain photo. https://mastodon.online/@annejefferson/110334759393030084
That view is actually in the #reservoir pool for the #WaterfallWednesday dam. Very peaceful, but very unnatural.

This morning I got to spend time along a new part of the Winooski River. Here’s the North Branch as it flows into Montpelier, #Vermont. A very lovely scene to chat with a colleague about floods, stormwater and water quality and think about both the challenges and possibilities in the Lake Champlain basin. #52LakeChamplain #Montpelier #Winooski #river #floodplain #spring

Quiet, drizzly weekend so here’s a shot from last weekend’s Earth Day #cleanup on the #BurlingtonVT waterfront looking north towards Rock Point. #52LakeChamplain

Hoisington Brook in Westport, NY's Lee Park, just upstream of its mouth into Lake Champlain, where the stream cuts across a sandy beach. Hoisington Brook is at the north end of #LakeChamplain's South Basin sub-basin. Major early summer goal: exploring more of the south basin and finding more local gems like this park and stream. #52LakeChamplain #WaterfallWednesday #LakeChamplain #NewYork #Adirondacks #parks

And that Mirror Lake ice is definitively out for the year! Screengrab below from the Ausable River Association camera livestream just now. https://www.ausableriver.org/watershed/lakes/mirror-lake/mirror-lake-livestream
We went from pretty complete ice cover on Tuesday to wet around the edges on Wednesday to patchy partial ice Thursday to no ice today. #Spring has come to the #Adirondacks and #LakeChamplainBasin.

This week’s #52LakeChamplain view is of Potash Brook, Burlington’s urban stream. Though you can’t tell from this picture, the stream runs under and through many of the Burlington area’s residential and commercial districts, and an interstate is just up the hill out of frame to the right. This special spot is in UVM’s East Woods Natural Area and I look forward to excuses to revisit this lovely #urban #stream for #research and #teaching. #LakeChamplainBasin #Vermont #BurlingtonVT #UrbanStreams

Todays #52LakeChamplain view is from on top of #Shelburne #Farms Lone Tree Hill (next to the sugar bush) looking down toward Quakers Smith Point and Lake Champlain, and the across to the #Adirondacks. #LakeChamplain #Vermont

Below Winooski Falls (https://mastodon.online/@annejefferson/109735003170787948) the Winooski #River takes a very #sinuous #meandering course to Lake Champlain. From this photo to the mouth of the river is 4.6 km straight line, but 8.9 as the river flows. Lots of floodplain forest, farmland, and wetlands are preserved along its course thanks to their periodic inundation & #Vermont's sensible land use practices. #52LakeChamplain #BurlingtonVT

A bit late with this week’s #52LakeChamplain view (because viruses), but here’s my neighborhood stream. It’s what we term “direct to lake” as it is not tributary to a larger river before it enters Lake Champlain. Most of the length of streams and rivers in the Lake Champlain basin (and beyond) is in #headwater #streams like this one, so it’s important to protect their #water quality and #habitat.

I haven't been in #Vermont all week...But here's a fab shot I got of the #BurlingtonVT Lake Champlain #waterfront looking south toward Shelburne Bay as I left town on Monday. Glad to be on my way home now via a comfy #Amtrak ride. Need to make time to explore more views this week. #52LakeChamplain

Today’s #52LakeChamplain view comes from Shelburne Bay Park, #Vermont. We’re looking north across the bay towards South Burlington’s Red Rocks Park, where I started this series. It looks like this part of the bay is frozen, but I thought I saw open water where the bay meets the main part of Lake Champlain. #LakeChamplain #Shelburne #lake #ice

Today’s #52LakeChamplain view is from the top of Mt Philo, in Charlotte, #Vermont. We’re looking out over the Lewis Creek watershed, towards Town Farm Bay and the main part of #LakeChamplain, with the #Adirondacks in the distance. It was very windy today at the summit, but this is just clearly another special spot that we look forward to revisiting in all seasons.

We enjoyed exploring #BurlingtonVT's Oakledge Park yesterday. An accessible treehouse, ruins, beach, and incredible panoramas of #LakeChamplain, the city, and #Adirondacks were a lot to enjoy in a short distance. Unfortunately, I took a spill on the #ice, and this is a #52LakeChamplain view I'll be feeling for a while. Here's the view looking towards Burlington, with some lovely pancake #ice on the #lake. #Vermont More photos to come in thread.

I posted a similar view a few weeks ago for #52LakeChamplain but here’s a view of the main part of Winooski Falls on the Winooski River in Winooski, #Vermont. Near #BurlingtonVT. I love the mill on the other side of the river because it underscores our dependence on water power and #waterfalls for economic growth. Today many of Vermont’s mills have been redeveloped for shops & housing. #WaterfallWednesday.

@Habigelo @fade thanks for the recommendation. I also backed the kickstarter but I started the #52LakeChamplain project here and haven’t decided how to best migrate it if I move

Earlier this week, I visit the Lake Champlain Basin program staff at Grand Isle, on South Hero Island. The lake's Hero Islands are connected by causeways from mainland Vermont. The view below is from the middle of the US 2 causeway between Sandbar State Park and South Hero. I learned the lake had frozen over there only about a week before my visit. And the wind Friday-Saturday caused terrible drifts on the road. #LakeChamplain #52LakeChamplain #HeroIslands #Vermont #ice #LCBP #desolate

Last week we visited Winooski Falls, this week we moved one #watershed south to explore the trail leading to Shelburne Falls on the LaPlatte River in #Vermont.
The LaPlatte drains 53 square miles with a mix of forest, agriculture, and urban land uses, including the towns of Hinesburg, Charlotte, and Shelburne. The river empties into Lake Champlain at the south end of Shelburne Bay.

this week’s #52LakeChamplain view.
This is the #Winooski River in Winooski, as it cascades down to #LakeChamplain. The #river is the largest tributary to the Lake in #Vermont, and its #watershed covers 10% of the state. This former #mill town is revitalizing its riverfront & downtown with housing, shops, & restaurants. The rapids/falls would be much taller if there weren’t a hydroelectric dam a short distance downstream. I’ll share another view of this reach for #WaterfallWednesday.
