Sincerely wish people would take the half-step beyond "Wow, it's weird that James Comey and John Bolton are on the hook for politics right now" to "All criminal accusations are politics, and virtually all of them are petty to the point that the politics are 'poor people deserve to suffer.'" #4L

I'm just so sick of applying to attorney job postings that are set up to hire a year in advance. These employers do not give a single shit about individual attorneys. There is no actual reason for these absurd timelines. #4L

The primary purpose of criminal law is to justify the marginalization of people. The secondary purpose of criminal law is to justify the privileges of power through selective prosecution. i.e., "He's not been convicted of a crime" as a reason we should not talk about the known bad deeds of people who are in power (or are just white). #4L

My notes on this say I gained 20 pounds in the run-up to law school and 40 pounds during. Way less than it felt like, tbh. But, again, that was probably mostly my diet making me feel like shit. It's not much better yet, but even a little bit helped. #4L

I'm on the post-law-school health kick, and I think it's going pretty well. It's actually incredible that I haven't net gained any weight during this year so far, considering how much stress eating I was doing with the final semester, journal, and the Bar.
Less incredible that, now that I have space to breathe, I'm having body image issues worse than I already was. But that'll be fine. I'm not beholden to my cope-driven law-school eating habits anymore. #4L

Lawyers, like, really need you to know that they think being a lawyer is cool and that lawyers are necessary to maintain social cohesion. It's almost like lawyers have invested nothing into finding out what the world is really like outside the confines of their "profession." Alas. #4L

BTW, I passed the Bar. The only things standing between me and being a lawyer are paperwork and a down payment on dues.
The Bar Exam must be abolished. Being a lawyer is bad.
But I am relieved that the hazing rituals associated with it are over for me. Yay for that. #4L

Stupid law idea that a liberal might love:
4 U.S.C., Section 1 does not specify whether the alternating red and white stripes on the US flag begin on red or white.
The civilian use portion incorporates an executive order by Dwight Eisenhower that includes an image of the flag beginning with a red stripe on top.
But a flag that begins with a white stripe on top conforms to the statute as-written. #4L

So, I get my Bar results on Friday and may be imminently subject to a character and fitness evaluation soon after, if I passed. I, for one, would like to wish my panel a good day on this, the day that my cat Loki was returned to me in good heath. He is very cute. #4L

I wonder what judges think of the "ethical" rules intended to prevent lawyers from advocating for the dissolution of marriages. Judges love punishing people for staying with partners who the judge hates. #4L

Just watched a video from a sentencing where a family member of the deceased said to a 30-year-old woman, "My only hope is that your sentence will keep you incarcerated long enough you will never have the opportunity to become a mother."
The cruelty of the system is the point. And we all know it. There is nothing good about the criminal legal system. It just makes us worse people. #4L

Was on the winning side of a criminal case for the first time today.
Old lady who may or may not have had a bit too much to drink got behind the wheel and someone told her that she shouldn't drive. So she decided to take the bus home. They arrested her at the bus stop.
Not Guilty! #4L

Also, I will remember this for the rest of my life: They started the test with a long colloquy about the Rules of Professional Conduct and said that the Bar Exam was a test of character.
What that meant was, if we did poorly on the test, we were not only not skilled enough to be lawyers (bullshit), but that we were bad people. Absurdly inappropriate.
Like, the Bar Exam is a hazing ritual. That's obvious to everyone who has thought about it for more than a minute. But then the people running it argue that it is more than a hazing ritual by using hazing tropes like asking hurtful questions and talking down to you and locking you in a room for three hours, or forcing hundreds of people to sit in silence for 20 minutes while not being allowed to leave their seat for any reason.

The NCBE doesn't want candidates talking about the contents of the Bar Exam because they don't want to be canceled for asking questions about abortion where "it's a fundamental right" is the wrong answer or whether evidence rules allow lawyers to argue a woman was asking to be sexually assaulted if she was really asking for it. I was pretty confident about the morning session's multiple choice, but I did it too fast.
The afternoon session... was a series of inquiries. Some of which were comprehensible. Others of which were not.
But I finished the whole Bar Exam, so there's a rebuttable presumption that I passed. We'll know in six-ish weeks. #4L

We got a judge to say "I might be wrong" while denying our motion for a criminal defendant. That's a win, baby.
And I got to cite a case from 1896, so tick off that 19th century box for the summer, lol. #4L
