Years ago I wrote about the values in the 4H Pledge https://biketoworkbarb.blogspot.com/2011/02/head-heart-hands-and-health.html. Ever since then when I find a good pledge I drop it in the comments on that post. The poems make suitable reading for the Fourth of July, especially in these times. These aren't unthinking patriotism--they pledge to things like the soil in a garden and Janet Wong's "acceptance / of the views, / so different, /

4-H is a U.S. government run club that teaches kids about agriculture and farming. It's always been based in science and that continues to expand to other areas like computers and chemistry.

I hate to say it out loud - 4-H has somehow kept it's DEI programs so far. Years ago, it provided me a chance to meet people of varying cultures and expand my understanding.

Ok, here goes nothing. First, pick up an elderly neighbor's newspaper. Walk the puppy then paint the beautiful shelf a friend built for our 4H club to take to the fair. If I have any energy left I will doublecheck the fair tubs and move them to the garage. Then make mints. I am tired of just typing this. I remembered somebody who tried to help me growing up: Cheryl, the 4H lady.
She took an interest in me. She supported me, and did what she could to get me involved and out of the house.

Each year, she would give my sister & I seeds and starts to plant a garden, and in exchange, we’d get scholarships to 4H Summer Camp. That one week a year, away at camp, was my one chance to try on a version of being my “real” self. You could truly say I “camped it up”.

I lived for it.

Anyway, I want to say THANK YOU to Cheryl the #4H Lady. She was an adult who cared about me.
