  1. Open Source is not bad, but Free Software is better:
Freedom 0: The freedom to use the program for any purpose.
1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.
2: The freedom to redistribute and make copies so you can help your neighbor.
3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

  5. #FreeSoftware is an important building block to a #FreeSociety. With technology being all over, everyone should have the #4freedoms to ensure that we, the #users, control the #technology around us and not the technology controlling us. Learn more: fsf.org/appeal #CornerstoneOfAFreeSociety

  7. @aral the #4opens is designed to JUDGE and use this judgement to create and nurture conversations and actions to widen the space for "commons" what we do with these commons is up to us. This is both messy (thus CC licence as an option) It's wide to include liberalism with bronze and silver, but pushes gold to step beyond this. Where the #4freedoms are FROM, based in 20th century progressive liberalism, the #4opens are TWO, based on the last 40 years of #FOSS we need the second to compost the current mess.

  9. @witchescauldron Ah, nice. Although I’d be wary of recommending Creative Commons licenses for software (Lawrence Lessig warned me off of them for that use case a long time ago, citing lack of limitation of liability clauses). And I’d be careful to ensure people understand that liberal licenses like MIT, while “open source”, do not protect the freedom of the software. I almost feel like #4freedoms reflects the philosophy better than #4opens (but would clash with FSF’s 4 freedoms)

  11. The @fsfe used to sell a t-shirt that says "the 100 software freedoms" and then starts from "001". That's missing an opportunity and a point:

First of all, of course you start from "00" and you use two digits. You're trying to be nerdy and fail to go Full Nerd?

Second, when you start from 00, you get:

    00 Use
01 Study (and improve for private use)
10 Share (verbatim, help your neighbor be free)
11 Improve (as a community, and share improvements)

Freedoms x1 require access to the source code. Freedoms 1x require the right to distribute.

  12. @witchescauldron ^^^ This is our admin. You'll find him living and boating across Europe. He upholds and embodies the #4opens and #4freedoms of #foss and of a platform where *anyone* is welcome to #communicate and find a common ground, with #leftists.

He is not able to continue to keep our server alive beyond 8 Oct without some donations, or funding. We are willing, as a web developer and programmer to work on any project *you* want (non CAGEMAFIA) in exchange for a donation to help #activism.

  13.     Project Do Better works  to create a society where every child is safe, and that is more fully inclusive for all of us.

Feedback and  Reviewers for this now finished and published book are still  needed on the community manual for Project Do Better

Project Do Better presents a vision of a world in which we all work toward a full safety net, and a better tomorrow, for all of us.

I have a request to make:

I believe that planning ahead is a good idea, so:

We need, still,  a  central portal set up for the project.

Oh, and a logo, please, although a friend of a friend may be working on this, not verified yet.

The sections, of the Do Better book were posted every Wondering Wednesday,  seek  to build up a Community of Interest around this vision to both share the idea, and eventually also help to share the work, as this project will obviously be inter-generational. I’ve tried to explain the entire idea in the post for the Preface to this book, which several readers found helpful in clarifying my idea.  I am  seeking other Willing Workers On Our Future, hopefully younger than I am, who wish to take up the baton.

So, any sort of way that anyone would like to participate is great, from

    1. simply liking and commenting on these posts, to

    2. re-posting or otherwise sharing any Project Do Better posts,  to

    3. posting your own publications on The Educational Round Robin blog, if you wish, and I can give you publishing authority to do this, as I’ve already given others, to

    4. actively collaborating on  the project detailed in the book, or even just reviewing the manual in places like Librivox, or even on The Archive, as there are many areas to subdivide, between now and the next 60 years, and many hands will be needed.

So, in terms of what you can do, there are as many ways to contribute to this work as there are individuals with their own callings to read and share, to write, to draw, to teach, to build, etc!

In terms of being a part of what works to make the world a more just place, certainly there are many ways. What is essential to hold on to is the idea that there is more than just the one song, strike, campaign, movement, or even decade: each action that we take must be tied to a larger picture, so that that movement will keep generating progress for the whole, and to remember that there is always a next step to take.

    Action Prompts:

1.) Share  your thoughts on how this project  could be improved, in the comments, here, please.  Consider sharing some ideas you may have on how our society can solve homelessness and child abuse, starting right now.

2.) Share your thoughts on how we can build empathy in our society today

3.) Write a story, post or tweet that uses those thoughts.

  14. @zee so let's get this straight. If we eliminate all oppression and marginalization based on race, gender, religion, sexuality and class except for one slave (let's call him: superman https://www.smbc-comics.com/?id=2305 ) ...and we make a whole shit ton of software that gives everyone the #4freedoms, isn't tivoized, is gratis for everyone, isn't hosted behind microsoft or #greatcloudwall, and doesn't have antifeatures like spying...you think that the software isn't free *at all*?
