  1. Pulled out a noisy #486dx system in my collection! Listen to that hard drive! This one is among the oldest machines in my collection! Where did I get it? I don’t know! But, it works! (By the way, old machines like this have mains voltage going to those power buttons - don’t mess with them!) #oldcomputer #retrocomputer #intel486 #dos #msdos #plopbootloader #vintagecomputer #retrocomputing #90s #90snostalgia

  3. Which one should I use for an upgrade of my 486DX 33? Does either of them require a fan or heatsink? The Intel CPU seems to have had a heatsink before.

  8. Installed Windows 3.1 on my 486 last night ^^ Dedication to the whole playing retro games in real retro gear! I’m getting Myst installed for my first playthrough and was surprised to find it’s a requirement.

Turns out drivers for video and audio are quite the tricky ones when you need SVGA support on a VESA card and audio from a SB Awe64. Both are required to play the game properly.

I’ll need to find working drivers for my S3 Trio64v2/DX card as well as something that is actually willing to install wave support for the Awe64.

  18. I have learned I likely blew the fuse providing power to the external floppy drive on my Toshiba Portégé T3600CT. The crime? I plugged an IBM ThinkPad floppy drive with the SAME EXACT GODDAMN CONNECTOR into it. ThinkWiki says:

    "ATTENTION!
Also Toshiba produced a cable with same connectors as IBM 74H0219. Toshiba 20mm connector pinout is different: at the very least, pins for power and ground are shorted relative to IBM. Tip by Ziginox."

  23. Turns out there was no battery in this Dolch PAC61 but a Dallas RTC chip.
I got it back together with no screws leftover and still working, so that's a win.
Bonus: I found the little round plastic part rattling inside the case, so I was able to close the hole.
