IHI project VICT3R has reached an important milestone in its quest to dramatically reduce the numbers of animals used in medicine safety testing by replacing actual control groups with ‘Virtual Control Groups’ (VCGs).
The European Medicines Agency has launched a consultation on a qualification opinion on the use of VCGs, as proposed by VICT3R, in certain studies. The consultation will run until 12 May, and details can be found at https://link.europa.eu/XqwHjG.

"70 billion terrestrial animals and between 59 and 129 billion aquatic animals are used annually, compared with 192 million #research animals [~670 times less animals]. However, animal #farming is not scrutinized through the lens of the 3Rs and instead remains focused on increasing production to feed the world. The justification for this #ethical discrepancy is unclear."
