  1. @selea @carapace i’m a huge fan of #SOVOL lately; they’re actually doing open source #3DPrinters correctly.

I have their SV08, which is a 3D printer hacker’s dream rig: everything on it works well enough, right out of the box, and most everything in the box is compatible with many of the Voron 2.4 modifications out there. sovol3d.com/products/sovol-sv0

The Sovol Zero is their take on the Voron 0.2 - I haven’t played with one of those but they seem to be well received by the community too. sovol3d.com/products/sovol-zer

I do however understand that a hackable printer may not be the ideal choice for a #hackerspace: there’s a lot of temptation to modify such a machine, and machine mods in a hackerspace often mean machines that just don’t work anymore, with a bonus side effect of members being angry with one another.

  2. I've a somewhat bad luck with picking a brand that is highly recommended, even if they cost more at times compared to the competition, and end up discovering they're shitty literally so soon after my purchase.

    That happened with
#Anker 's #Eufy, and it happened with #BambuLabs. For the latter, it seems that they're continuing their bullshit crusade against people freaking owning their #3Dprinters they paid for - including by hunting down #FOSS devs/projects that allow people to print stuffs on their printers without being spied on by Bambu Labs.

Seriously, fuck these brands and vote with your wallet. Also, if you've always been paranoid of American brands, don't forget to do so with Chinese brands too. You're a fool if you a think they're any better.

  4. I remember when my sister and me were in early elementary school... Kids with great imagination. We talked about the best Christmas gift and concluded we want "liquid plastic to make #toys of it".

Well, years later #3Dprinters became a thing. And few years ago I even use one. So were we prophets? :blobCat_giggle:

I'm kind of sad I am not a kid in current time, at least until I think about more dystopian today things.

  5. Quick Post #5: A Utility for Converting .obj Files Created by Microsoft 3D Builder
There are several different file formats for specifying 3d objects (as Tannenbaum wrote, "The good thing about standards is that there are so many to choose from." One such standard is the obj or .obj open format. By itself, the .obj file definition does not support coding surface shading properties in the .obj file,

  6. #introduction

Hi all! My name is Jeff, and I'm #softwareDeveloper and #maker in the process of relocating to #NewZealand.

My journey through social media started with Bulletin Board Systems (#BBS) & #IRC, through LiveJournal, to Facebook, an enjoyable stint in G+, back to Facebook, and now Mastodon. Ironically I never really got into Twitter, which I understand Mastadon aims to replace.

In my career I've worked on incredibly interesting projects like full scale helicopter simulators, small drone (#sUAS) control systems, and signal jamming technologies. I've worked with #C++ , #CSharp, #Python, #LabView.

But what I'm most proud of has been my time volunteering for a local charity I helped found, #MakersLocal256. This #makerspace was the first in #Alabama, has been around for over 15 years, and has survived on a "pay what you can" system. Our goal was and is to make available tools and technologies to those who either can afford it better together, or simply don't have the space for something like a gigantic #laserCutter. I've learned and taught equipment there such as #3DPrinters, #soldering, #embedded projects, #IoT, #lathes, #welding, #leatherWorking, #HamRadio and #cyberSecurity.

    I've served #ML256 as both their Treasurer using systems like #GnuCash, and as a #systemsAdministrator using technologies including #Proxmox, #VMWare, #Redmine, #Owncloud, #ZoneMinder

As a hobbyist I run my own #homelab including this instance of Mastadon, #Plex, #mqtt, #proxmoxBE

My other hobbies include #cooking, with a focus on #sousVide and #cajun food, collecting #puzzleBoxes .
I consume large amounts of #Sci-Fi television, #anime, and have a weakness for paranormal teenage drama series like #vampireDiaries and now some soul rotting show called #FateWinxSaga. They're just so awful I can't stop watching.

In my youth I attended a #boardingSchool called #ASMS before Dumbledore made them cool. We had a cheerleading team for our chess team, it was baller. Our headmaster was from #NewZealand, and we plan to catch up once we get settled in.

My wife of eight years and I met in college, and has been my best friend, travel companion, taste tester, and cheerleader. She's an amazing #cosplay artist from Tennessee who has crafted #yukatas #kimonos, outfits from #animes, and so much more.
Her Londo Mallari from #Babylon5 is still the highest rated post of all time in r/Babylon5.

As her handler I end up going to many of her competitions and events, our favorite being #DragonCon . As a reward for being her personal slave, I earn cosplay points, which I save up and cash in on requests. The most memorable is when I asked to be a #sandworm from #Dune. She built a 14 meter worm in the style of a Chinese dragon. It takes eight people to pilot, has been in three parades, two with Kevin J. Anderson leading our path. She carries the 16 kilogram head, with me as her second in line. It's been featured in #MakeMagazine and has been used for a movie premier at a local theatre.

Well, that's me :) I don't intend on writing posts this long going forward, and honestly this felt like writing a CV. But hell, if you're gunna do, do it up.

  7. The same game gave me an other interesting related memorie for this #LucasArtsMonth. More or less at the same time that #Monkey3 arraive I heard about #3DPrinters. As Guybrush has now a 3D model I wonder to print one to have it in my colection... It has passed many years from that and now the ministure 3D printing is a reality but in those days was mor like science fiction fron my imagination.

After all, there are tons of #OpenSourced #3Dprinters on the market, so doing #2Dprinter shoudln't be that hard...

All it needs to to is spit #PDF|s on paper!

The only reason I still use my #Deskjet6122 is because it refuses to die, it works flawless on #Linux and both ink and 3rd party cartridges are so cheap, it's not worth biting the bullet and buy a chonky Xerox multifunction lazer because it would've to also replace the #OfficejetJ4150 that I still use for scanning...

  14. My #Prusa #MK3S is stuck in a recalibration loop after several days of rain, and then several days of running a dehumidifier. Last time when this happened indoors, it was a lubrication issue. I had to clean the rails and then lubricate with a thin #RCCar lube.

Has anyone tried graphite lubricants that might be less dust and humidity sensitive?

This #vulnerability allegedly enables potential attackers to control any Anycubic #3Dprinter affected by this vulnerability using the company's #MQTT service #API.
The hacked_machine_readme.gcode file received by the impacted devices also asks Anycubic to open-source their 3D printers because the company's software "is lacking." The file claims 2,934,635 devices downloaded this warning .

  17. Do you know those annoying layer lines on #3Dprinted parts? In resin #3Dprinters, they are as small as 25 microns… And we can make #microfluidics molds with these printers. Does this mean we can reach 25 microns features in Z?

YES! We can make a mold for a “staircase” microfluidic device. Now we have steps of 25um on the height of the channel. This #microfluidic does not only filter #microparticles, but also size-sort them. Particles of different sizes will be blocked on different steps.

  18. I bought my niece (10) and nephew (7) this 3D printer for Christmas. After around an hour they were completely self sufficient and printing all kinds of stuff! If you have kids you want to get into STEAM, I highly recommend getting them a Toybox printer! - toybox.com/

  21. 3D Printer Surveillance

New York is contemplating a bill that adds surveillance to 3D printers:
    New York’s 20262027 executive budget bill (S.9005 / A.1... schneier.com/blog/archives/202

  22. A dozen US states want to pass legislation to require blacklisting software installed on all #3Dprinters, ostensibly to stop people from printing parts for guns.

You can #3Dprint all or most of a working ghost-gun now, perhaps only needing a few untracked metal parts to make it more reliable and durable.

You can be sure, however, that if these bills are passed, they'll use the same system to block anyone printing whistles, too.

  23. So I now have 6 Bambu Lab #3dPrinters. 2 P1S printers, and 4 A1Minis. Of those, 1 P1S is operating, and 3 of the A1Mini's are down for vairous issues. One of the latter may just need me to do a minor ajustment. One needs a new heating element or thermal couple (it's a set) and the other may end up needing a new extruder. (It ate it's own extrusion...)

I may have the parts to bring up the second P1S, but I need to clean up 'access' to it in any case.

  24. What could cause a 3D printer to do this? Prints fine on a retry but has done this twice so far after a long pause between printings.

So, it seems the problem was indeed the #hotend #fan... A larger print will tell, but that's for tomorrow: it's late here in Italy, and I don't want to leave it running unattended during the night, I've read of #3Dprinters catching fire and burning down houses 😱

  33. #Colorado - #Libraries and the ‘economy of sharing’

An ode to the palace of the people

    By Kaylee Harter - Apr. 9, 2025

"Visit one of BPL’s #makerspaces, a feature that’s become a staple in many libraries, and you can use #3DPrinters, #looms, #LaserCutters, #ScreenPrinting equipment and more.

" 'It’s a collaborative learning environment,' Farnan says. 'We’re learning together. If you were to go into the makerspace today and ask, like, ‘I’m thinking about doing this,’ then they would say, ‘I don’t know how to do that, but let’s figure it out.’

    " 'That is inherently resilient.'

"He recalls a blind artist who came in with a unique challenge: 'She wanted to be able to see her drawings.'

" 'They worked with her with 3D printers, with the laser cutters and that kind of thing, in order to transfer her drawings into dimensional objects, because they were abstractions, so that she could then see them with her fingers.'

"Despite the always expanding array of programming and services, the books themselves — and literacy for all ages — are ever important."
