Let Freedom Ring!
Do fireworks tell a story? I think so, a story that is not so easy to understand at first glance. Why are Americans so hell bent on buying cheap explosives made in China from an Indian Reservation so they can blow things up, terrorize their pets, and set the grass on fire?
I can totally understand why someone would question that.
Fireworks were actually a whole lot more popular for the first 50 years of my life. The skies would light up all night long. Sparklers were 3 feet long, 250,000 degrees, and we handed them out to small children! Public fireworks displays were often a family tradition and probably a bit safer than the homemade backyard displays we staged ourselves with mortars and PVC pipe.
There were parades, church picnics, BBQ’s. You stayed up until 1 in the morning.
So what changed? People started social justice campaigns to ban fireworks. They hurt dog’s ears. They’re a fire risk. They traumatize veterans. They wake sleeping babies. Eventually, at least in places like my neck of the woods, we soon slid right over into just trying to ban the 4th of July itself. We created “Inter-dependence Day” and numerous other protest alternatives. Some people said they just didn’t think America ought to be celebrated anymore, but still others spoke the real truth, it’s the “independence” part in “Independence Day” that offends them.
So, Inter-dependence, Two Spirit People’s Day, Collectivism Day, all became fashionable alternatives. Suddenly we needed the government to pass laws and regulations that would control anybody who still seemed to believe that adults living in a free country ought to be the ones in charge of governing their own selves, for good or ill. (Yes, you betcha, if you’re irresponsible with your celebration of small explosives, somebody will probably get hurt. Welcome to the grown up world.)
“Independence” was the real target. Allowing grown ups to assume responsibility for their own choices was just a bridge too far….
That right there is the crux of the matter, “the great divide” if you will. Some of us seem to believe that the government gets to be like mom and dad, restricting people’s behavior, preventing our access to dangerous things, controlling our movements, setting curfews, mandating masks, demanding vaccine passports, sorry, I digress….. My point simply being, some people seem to believe the government is the grown up and we the people exist at their pleasure. Others seem to believe we the people are the grown ups and the government actually exists at our pleasure.
Anyway, where I live it’s very wet. It often rains the week before the 4th. Fireworks out at the ocean beaches was once a popular event. Fireworks out on a barge in the bay. There were also bridge blasts over the water and firetrucks hosing down dirt fields in anticipation of the festivities. We’ve watched the “ban the 4th of July” people move from town to town across this state, first banning fireworks at beaches and parks, then banning large controlled public displays over the water. Are any of these events fire risks? No, not really. In fact, they’re a whole lot safer than driving fireworks underground and into dry grassy fields or woods.
But of course it’s not about logic or safety, it’s about control.
I was online chatting about the heatwave in Europe and how many people have died in places where air conditioning is rare. (In fact, more people die from heat exhaustion in Europe than die in America from hand guns! It’s shocking.) Anyway, a politician in France said that air conditioning was bad for global warming and that’s why she didn’t want it. It’s not just about her comfort today, but also about protecting the next generation. Sacrifices must be made for their sake. Someone asked, “So what do you do with the bodies of all the people who tragically pass away?“
Put them on ice in refrigeration!
I about fell out of my chair. That my friends, is why I am an American clinging fiercely to my fireworks and to the notion that we the people are the grown ups who might get it all wrong, but we will never get it as wrong as a bureaucrat who thinks they are entitled to force their decisions upon others, for the collective “good.”
