“…Fire Update: Unmanned Aerial Systems continue to detect areas of heat, many of which are well within the fires’ perimeters. Guided by the drone operators, the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection Fairbanks 1 Crew is digging out hot spots along the edge of the fires so that they will be exposed to the forecast rains. Digging out the areas of heat along the perimeter to catch rain will utilize the natural elements to extinguish them. If these areas were not exposed, they would continue to smolder in the deeper layers of duff where the rain would have little to no effect. Occasional smoke will be visible on warm days as repair work continues on Nenana Ridge Complex

They gridded for hot spots on the fire’s edge along Nenana Ridge Road West. Wednesday they will grid the north perimeter working west from Nenana Ridge Road. The incoming Incident Commander and a member of operations took a reconnaissance flight Tuesday morning to survey the fire area and get a scope of the remaining repair work. Graders and compactors are working together on forest roads while excavators continue to scatter vegetative material over control lines and breakup dozer berms. There will continue to be occasional smoke visible from interior areas of the fires as heavy, down trees continue to smolder with warmer and dryer conditions…”

Red Flag Warnings for Copper River Basin and Tok Cutoff Today, Delta Area Tomorrow

“…The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for today, Wednesday, August 6th, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM for the Copper River Basin extending to the Tok Cutoff. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are expected, creating a high risk for new fires to ignite and for existing fires to spread rapidly.
A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring or are about to occur. In Alaska, this means warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds are combining with dry fuels (like grass and dead trees) to create a high risk of wildfire.
This warning is also in effect for the Delta area tomorrow, Thursday, August 7th, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM…”

“…Operations: As suppression efforts begin to wind down on the 7 Mile Lookout Fire, crews remain focused on securing the fire perimeter and preparing for the eventual removal of equipment. Firefighters from Tanana Chiefs Type 2 Initial Attack, Gannett Glacier Type 2 Initial Attack, Pioneer Peak Hotshots, and North Star Crew continue working along 7 Mile Lookout Road. Their focus continues to be on piling and burning hazard trees and woody debris to widen containment lines and reduce the risk of future fire spread, particularly in areas with lingering heat in deep duff layers.Crews also conducted multiple test burns between two previously burned sections on the southern perimeter to remove remaining black spruce and unburned fuels. However, due to high humidity and recent scattered rain showers, fuels under the canopy remained too wet to carry fire effectively. The process is a vital post-wildfire activity that focuses on restoring the landscape and mitigating the damage caused by firefighting efforts. A major concern is the impact of heavy equipment on permafrost, which can be easily disturbed. Cool, wet weather slows repairs on #NenanaRidgeComplex as smaller organization assumes command

“…Fire Update: Rain made forest roads slippery and unsafe for travel Monday slowing suppression repair work across much of the complex. Traveling on roads that had been graded would have required them to be work on again. The Unmanned Aerial System flew reconnaissance missions between rain showers mapping repair work and seeking hot spots. The helicopter assigned to the complex responded to Anderson where a structure fire spread into the wildlands. Bucket work kept the fire from spreading beyond a tenth of an acre.
Fire management is transitioning to a smaller organization based out of Fairbanks Area Forestry. They will assume command Tuesday evening at 8:00 PM. Their focus will be on suppression repair of control lines and forest roads. Fire engines will continue to patrol monitoring the any issues that could compromise containment. BLM AFS responds to increased fire activity

“…On Monday, four BLM Alaska Fire Service smokejumpers were dispatched to the Medicine Fire (#484) to protect a cabin along Birch Creek. The wind-driven fire was estimated at approximately 1,000 acres and exhibited active fire behavior, including torching and running through black spruce fuels. Detected by satellite imagery Monday morning, the fire is located about 17 miles southeast of Central and a mile north of the 9,600-acre Buckley Bar Fire (#264), which is part of the #PtarmiganComplex. The Medicine Fire is believed to have been ignited by lightning that touched down in the area on Sunday. Firefighters had previously visited the cabin to complete structure protection work to protect it from the Buckley Bar Fire.
“Also over the Sunday, four smokejumpers responded to the #BlackSandFire (#483), located approximately 32 miles north of Ruby, to protect a BLM-designated historic cabin. On East Nenana Ridge Road, an excavator is breaking apart dozer berms and opening drainage to allow the road surface to dry before it can be graded. Resource Advisors (READ) are inspecting repair work to firelines and spike camps along the southeastern portion of Goldstream Creek Fire. READs are technical specialists who advise on the protection of natural and cultural resources during wildland fire incidents. Firefighters will continue to monitor conditions and test fuel moisture in preparation for a full burnout operation when conditions allow.The Tanana Chiefs T2IA, Pioneer Peak IHC, Gannett Glacier T2IA, and North Star Fire Crews are cutting and piling fire-weakened trees to reduce hazards and prevent reignition from smoldering duff layers. Along the southern perimeter near 7 Mile Lookout Road, crews are gridding for hot spots, conducting mop-up, and using folding tanks and hose lines to saturate deep-burning fuels. “Operations: Due to challenging weather and muddy road conditions, fire suppression activities were impacted yesterday, and operators had to withdraw from certain areas. Despite this, suppression efforts are continuing, with a shifted strategy that utilizes more heavy equipment and fewer crews.
Fire suppression repair is actively underway for the parts of the fireline not located in permafrost areas. However, repairing the permafrost layers is a long-term plan because the ground needs time to heal. When a wildfire burns away the protective soil layer, the frozen ground underneath thaws and becomes an unstable mess. Trying to fix things with heavy machinery on this soft ground is not only dangerous but can also cause severe erosion and release climate-warming gases. Instead, crews will wait for the winter when the ground refreezes and becomes hard. This will allow them to safely access the area and complete the necessary repairs without causing further damage, ensuring a more effective and lasting recovery for the landscape.”

Firefighters prepare for burnout operation on 7 Mile Lookout Fire; burn may be lit Sunday

On the Goldstream Creek Fire, the northern most edge is in monitor and patrol status, with little fire activity throughout the area. Wrapping around to the eastern portion of the fire, in the zone west of Ohio Creek and northeast of Skinny Dick’s Road, containment line has been established. Pike Interagency Hotshot Crew moved out of the area Thursday. A helicopter assisted with the move, sling-loading the crew’s gear out. Platte Canyon Suppression Module has been working an area just north of Straight Creek, adjacent to where Pike IHC had camped. The weekend brings a mix of warmer weather in areas of the state, followed by increased chances of rain. Beginning Sunday and continuing into the start of the week, more widespread precipitation is expected as a southwesterly flow pulls moisture into the West Coast, which will extend further into the Interior on Monday and Tuesday.
Precipitation and cooler weather will limit fires to creeping and smoldering. However, duff layers in the southern regions are still dry and holding heat, making resistance to control very high until more wetting rains are received.
Firefighters continue the arduous work of mop-up to ensure the fire doesn’t cross firelines. Crews are also backhauling equipment and gear no longer needed. With moderated conditions, many fire management organizations will downsize in the coming days.

The Tatanka Hotshot crew arrived yesterday and will join forces with the USFS R10 crew. They will continue mop-up and hazard tree removal along the south and southwest perimeter of the Ninetyeight Fire (#218). The sprinkler system along the south and southwest perimeter of the fire was extended to cover the areas that were worked yesterday. Completion has been increased to 54% despite fire weather in the area slowly drying out since receiving the last trace of rain.

Alaska remains at a Preparedness Level (PL) 4. Initial attack was light on Saturday. There are more than 1,900 personnel assigned to 17 staffed fires across the state. Over 750,000 acres have burned in Alaska this year – with more than 300,000 of those acres burned in the last week. High temperatures are expected to peak on Sunday before turning cooler.
Until weather conditions become cooler and wetter, fuels will be available and ready to burn and increased fire activity is expected to continue today. With increased fire activity, additional smoke production will decrease air quality.
