  2. Okay all, the group #AOTY list is up! I've boosted the toot version from @1001otheralbums.com, but footnotes look like crap on here, so it might look better on the blog. Thanks everyone for taking part, there's some great stuff on here to check out - 132 albums, to be exact!

Happy listening! And remember, keep your friends close and your records closer. :ablobjam:

  3. Albums the Fediverse Loved in 2024

Okay all, here are 132 albums the Fediverse loved in 2024, mostly 2024 releases but also some earlier gems! Thanks so much to the 60 Fedizens who shared the albums that rocked their world – it’s nice to see some familiar faces from the 1001 Other Albums project, and some new ones! And, as always, it’s so lovely to get a glimpse into all our diverse tastes in music, and to see people trying something new solely based on a random Fedi recommendation.

Genre tags are included as tasting notes and each title is linked to its Bandcamp or Songlink (with the exception of 2 physical-only releases), so click and listen away – perhaps you’ll find a new-to-you album that gets you through 2025! Check out the footnotes to see who submitted each album, along with any extra comments they included (warning: some comments include MOAR ALBUMS).

Happy listening, and remember to keep your music close by this year, in case of emergencies. And, if you need more recommendations, you know where to find me.

I listened to this whole album on the trip there and the trip back in the car. It got me through a rough week ↩︎

    79. littlerachyb: Nina has a knack of hitting my feelings on the head. Anyway this year Mansion from this album was my tune, and the whole album resonated. ↩︎
    80. buffyleigh: This was my best discovery from the 1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die list – yep, I hadn’t heard it before this year – and it kickstarted my obsession with NIN which led to them being my most listened-to artist of the year, in both albums and minutes. I first saw them live on a boat in Stockholm, rubbing pieces of wood against each other, breaking branches, etc. On “Dry Routine”, there are also some woodwork, with sounds from both a regular and an electric saw, and all kinds of lo-fi field recordings, layered and looped into captivating pieces. So far, it’s my favorite release of the year. [Note link is to only one song; no digital release, limited vinyl.] ↩︎

  9. Two of my #2024MusicDiscoveries actually came from people sharing music on here! Of course I can't remember who to credit them, but someone shared links to songs by Lambrini Girls and General Chaos and I now adore both these bands.

I also heard Lola Young on KEXP and dig her a whole lot. Thee Sacred Souls are bringing some retro groove to my life. Ora The Molecule has some good stuff too! Yay new to me music!

  10. #TuneTuesday #2024MusicDiscoveries

One group I actually know about already but never really listening to before this year was BELLRING少女ハート

  11. #TuneTuesday #2024MusicDiscoveries , new to me this year are these young upstarts that are coincidentally part of the New Wave of Swedish Thrash.
Here's some Eradikated and their album Descendants.

  12. A quick entry for #2024musicdiscoveries this #TuneTuesday
Discovery mode was dialed low this year. I used to add videos from the Dark Americana Facebook group to a 'watch later' playlist and found real gems that way.
Since i don't frequent meta often anymore, that playlist has run dry.

I discovered CW Ayon here in the Fediverse and i really like this groove:

Notable second is The Guillotine by the Coop.

  13. Late to the #TuneTuesday party about #2024MusicDiscoveries

Well, I discovered so much new stuff this year, more than half of my #AOTY2024 was completely new for me. Go and have a look:

    metalhead.club/@derthomas/1136

But 2024 was also the year I discovered and immediately fell in love with Opeth, so here's one from their prog rock masterpieces:

  14. #TuneTuesday #2024MusicDiscoveries

Had never heard of these guys until enjoying brunch with my sister in Oakland over the summer and this track, Wild Coyote by The Nude Party, came on. Had to shazam it.

  15. One of my favorite musical discoveries this year was "Magnetic" from Tunde Adebimpe. I'm really looking forward to hearing more solo stuff from him.

  16. This week's #TuneTuesday is #2024MusicDiscoveries.

It wasn't a big year for new music for me. Browsing my Tidal favorite tracks and my "Relisten" playlist, I was reminded of Ancient Infinity Orchestra. I guess they could be included in the hyped up London jazz scene (one of my #UnpopularOpinions) and their album River of Light is on Gondwana Records. It's #SpiritualJazz in the vein of Coltrane and Pharoah.

  17. In this week's #TuneTuesday, @Kitty is asking about our #2024MusicDiscoveries, or music we found this year (but regardless of the release year).
I've listened to so many of the songs you good people have been kind enough to share and I'm really grateful for that. Unfortunately that prevents me to pick just one from the vast ocean of excellent music 😔
Ashen by #HumanitysLastBreath was my #AOTY2023, which made me discover the sound. Exploring the genre (some say it isn't one, nor is #Djent, but who cares) has put new bands onto my radar.
Curious about what I found? Check out #ThallNights. Happy listening 😁

  21. The #TuneTuesday theme this week, on a looser schedule than usual, is #2024MusicDiscoveries

I have listened to so many musicians for the first time in 2024, from the kind of DSBM that rends your emotions to shreds to new electronic beats but I think my personal favourite discovery has been anti-nazi black metal/dungeon synth weirdo Abysmal Specter and his label, Grime Stone Records.

I discovered them in September, as a result of someone on fedi posting the DJ October 32nd (Abysmal Specter again) EP 11 OUT 12 MONTHS AREN'T REAL, a compelling slice of Eternal Halloween themed dungeon rave.

A subscription to a selection of catalogue releases was promptly bought upon hearing the gleefully raw, melodic DIY aesthetic that permeates every damn thing they release, and I've been harping on about them every since.

They're also responsible for one of the AOTY entries for 2024:

Bloody Keep - Rats Of Black Death

  22. #TuneTuesday #2024MusicDiscoveries
Well, there's a lot of stuff. My second choice would've been #NothingMore - Angel's song.
My favorite of this year's findings is #Unprocessed Last song I've heard from them until this year was Rain. I didn't expected what I've heard from their new stuff, but that was amazing.

    Two latest singles:
    Sacrifice Me:

  23. It is #TuneTuesday with the theme of #2024MusicDiscoveries - cool music you discovered in 2024 (not necessarily released this year)

A few months ago I was browsing the interwebs for cat-related media (as one does) and happened upon "Sepia Cat City" by Moon Wiring Club. :blobcatmusic:

It's a beautiful, slightly chaotic, electronic collage and one of my most cherished album finds of the year. :blobcatlove:

  24. #TuneTuesday #2024MusicDiscoveries I discovered *so* many brilliant new-to-me artists this year (mostly thanks to @MFDOOMALLCAPS ), I could make a whole playlist 😅 I'll restrict it to my favourite tracks by the three who made the biggest impression, though.

CHVRCHES & Robert Smith - How Not To Drown
    song.link/gb/i/1590088300

Chelsea Wolfe - Destruction Makes the World Burn Brighter
    song.link/gb/i/681692791

Nation of Language - September Again

  25. So #TuneTuesday is themed on #2024MusicDiscoveries this week. Credit to my youngest daughter who's been playing the cd Prelude to Ecstacy on repeat. It turns out the Last Dinner Party is a bit of an obvious choice as they won some BBC new music poll this year, but heck, I just heard this and thought, mm, sounds a bit like Sparks, I like it.

    song.link/i/1716064546

Thanks again Kitty for curating, I've loved discovering new music each Tuesday. Onward and so forth.

  26. I have mentioned #Drahla a lot this year, so no surprise it is my choice for #TuneTuesday and #2024MusicDiscoveries

Have a great time everybody, however and wherever you choose to spend the next few days.

  27. For #TuneTuesday today the theme is #2024MusicDiscoveries. Music I've first discovered this year, but that wasn't necessarily released this year.

I don't want to mention #CharlotteWessels yet again, I'm convinced there was *something* else, right?

Well, turns out I discovered #ZealAndArdor this year!
