Agape – Nicholas Britell
This past drum corps season (2024, for those of you reading this further in the future), two groups performed the Nicholas Britell composition “Agape” in their shows. The song, originally written for the film If Beale Street Could Talk, is very haunting while uplifting, and its title’s meaning dates back to ancient Greece:
Agape (/ɑːˈɡɑːpeɪ, ˈɑːɡəˌpeɪ, ˈæɡə-/;[1] from Ancient Greek ἀγάπη (agápē)) is “the highest form of love, charity” and “the love of God for [human beings] and of [human beings] for God”. 1
While I loved how the Bluecoats and the Mandarins used Agape in their productions, I had not listened to the original composition until today. It stilled my mind as I could do nothing but listen to it. I hope it does the same for you.

I’ve been writing my reviews of this past season’s shows in reverse order of finish. I wanted to make sure the Open Class corps got the love they deserve, especially if I lose momentum and don’t get through everybody. It’s happened before. Then I pulled up YouTube and saw this in my feed:
Yep, for the fourth straight season, Phantom Regiment has dropped an official video of their performance at DCI Finals. This season’s show, Mynd, was also the 2024 FloMarching Fan Favorite, and for good reason. Nowhere else will you witness such an ovation just for revealing a conductor’s baton, before the first note is even played.
Once the baton excitement died down, the show picked up. Starting with a slow rendition of the Moonlight Sonata which slowly gained speed, the corps built into their first big hit of the show, preceded by a member of the corps suspending themselves from within one of the multiple “mind” cube props, before flailing as if in a panic and dropping to the ground, as if their own mind was overwhelmed by what it was experiencing. With the wall of sound Phantom put out this season, this is entirely understandable.
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLP4XUsocAKg_z1zGl9G9NbxYH3jmNbOka&si=v7-m5wAAoxKN78Q9
The sparks start to fly during Paul Lovett Cooper‘s Equilibrium, first with the snare line during the transition into this movement of the show, followed by the horns laying down a ton of notes courtesy of JD Shaw. The drill during this section is also full of energy, with many rotating forms at high velocity to blow our minds away as we watch.
The show goes introspective during the next movement, much like our minds do at times when we need to look within, maybe to remember an event in our past or to contemplate a decision which may affect our future. The corps gathers within the combined “mind” props, forming a tight block, visually and musically, for another glorious drum corps moment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKSvCq0HuH8
As the corps separates again, it’s the tenors who get their time to shine with a lengthily and impressive feature leading into Gilles Rocha’s Fly Or Die. You may not expect Phantom Regiment to go all jazzy on you, but this is as much in the corps’ blood as Romantic classical music thanks to past selections such as Maynard Ferguson’s take on Pagliacci and a ton of Gershwin. Of course, when you have a bass trombonist and baritone who can solo like what we experienced during this part of the show, you go all in on the jazz and just let them fly (and not die).
The closer of the show starts with Pillar III fro Andy Akiho, a drum corps veteran himself and someone who’s music has found a home many times in drum corps ever since the Bluecoats first brought it to the field as part of Tilt in 2014. Pillar III gives the full percussion, both field and front, the spotlight with intensity and tension, something the brass adds to when they come in as they build to the finale, the reprise of Moonlight Sonata. This is the moment where the crowd all but leaps out of the stands, coming to their feet for the final two minutes of the show as the corps does their tribute to the Cadets’ Z-Pull and then pushes forward as the mellophones destroy everybody’s hearing, the mind cubes spinning on the front sideline with color guard members hanging from within.
Seriously, it’s almost as much fun to watch the audience react as it is to watch the corps turn Lucas Oil Stadium into a pile of rubble:
https://youtu.be/X6dYKTCQxiY?si=0khDrcBeyKHLVt-s
1993 and 2003 are both examples of Phantom Regiment reinventing themselves while staying true to who they are. Both are also examples of the start of a build to an eventual championship (1996 and 2008, respectively). Could 2024 be the start of the next run for a title? My head is cautious, but my heart is optimistic that this is the case.

Somebody and/or something must have fanned the flames at the Raiders during the past off-season. The corps came onto the field significantly larger than their 2023 edition, indicating that recruitment went very well for this DCI Open Class corps. The corps also came onto the field with a look that made their show theme, Fan The Flame, apparent before a single note was played.
The show opened to the sounds of crackling fire before the percussion roared with a spark of their own. A solo mellophone brought the brass in with the opening melody of Ed Sheeran‘s Spark, with the rest of the brass joining in before the first full hit of the show at the chorus. This, at least according to the Drum Corps eXperience website, was the first use of Sheeran’s music in the drum corps activity, so the Raiders may also fan the flame of using his music more in future seasons. The percussion returned in full force as well as full size (including cymbals!) for a powerful feature during the next movement of the show, an original Michael Terry composition called Raging Out Of Control. This section of the show ended with sharp stabs from the brass line before transitioning into the next movement.
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLP4XUsocAKg-eKSutwoQkzjcCwxlX08bx&si=U9hleUev-NdiynaA
The Raiders’ take on Dimitri Shostakovitch‘s Fire of Eternal Glory was unique. Unlike previous uses of the composition in drum corps, the Raiders actually found a way to make it more Russian, in a sense, by performing the first half of the song in a minor key, almost as if the fire of this show had gotten out of control. We return to the major and much more hopeful key of the original for the final statement, as the corps triumphs over the fire.
https://youtu.be/jNUKw5BNLNI?si=1Xj89h_vFmo7wQim
This brings us to the closer, Billy Joel‘s We Didn’t Start the Fire. After a brief transition and intro, a baritone and a trumpet soloist trade off on the melody in a style that is more classical than rock, followed by the corps singing their own verse to the song, referring to the kinds of experiences one has during a drum corps season. A high energy drum corps finish ends the show with a fire that stayed hot throughout the show and lit the fuse for an even better season in 2025.

I have to admit, I’m starting to have fun playing with Affinity Photo 2 on my iPad. I haven’t even opened the application on a computer yet and I’m still working on the basic functions of the application.
Today’s editing project was with one of the photos I took of the Boston Crusaders during their 2024 DCI Finals performance of Glitch. Here is the original photo I took from the Lucas Oil Stadium press box of a group of horn players during the opener. This was the highest zoom level I could do with my camera, so there’s a lot on the periphery of the horns I was focusing on.
As with yesterday’s photo, I cropped the photo as close as I could to the horn players. While I was also able to use the inpainting brush again, this time I used it to remove the guard members who were cut off when I cropped the photo along the perimeter.
Here are the results:
I like this one better than yesterday since I had some focus issues when I zoomed in and cropped that photo. This one is much clearer, plus the colors and lighting are brighter, so I didn’t feel the need to adjust those.

The concept of red tape as a boundary preventing progress is probably as old as red tape itself. The analogy depicting bureaucracy and the powers that be standing in our way is a strong one and rarely, if ever, is used in a positive light. It is when we break through what’s holding us back to become what we work to be, to reach our goals, to grow beyond ourselves, that the red tape imagery becomes one of inspiration. That is the idea behind 7th Regiment’s 2024 program, Through the Red Tape.
2024 7th Regiment Show Announcement:
Visually, 7th Regiment put red to use every chance they had. Guard costumes and equipment? Red. Shako plumes? An even darker red. On top of that, plenty of red fabrics used to depict red tape which the corps members can interact with. The corps also added a literal dimension to their show with the use of a large stage behind the front ensemble on side 1 of the field, raising the performers above the rest of the corps while rising above any obstacles in their way.
2024 7th Regiment Repertoire:
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLP4XUsocAKg9d_aqF0PCyBEQxmt-MHYjC&si=stYXhul3DmS5yY-M
The musical selections also break boundaries. Combining music from the anime Attack On Titan with selections from prog rock bands Polyphia and Periphery, 7th Regiment presents a unique audio experience in the drum corps idiom. This is especially impressive as the corps features a percussion section that is of similar size to the brass section, leading to a delicate balancing act in both arranging and performance so the drums do not overpower the horns during key impacts in the show.

7th Regiment is a great example of how an Open Class corps can provide a world class experience to its members. The show design is a total package of eclectic and entertaining music with a visual package which clearly conveys the theme, providing a vehicle which showcases how well the corps performs. This is something 7th Regiment has achieved throughout their history, and I look forward to them continuing to break through the red tape in the future.

The beauty of shows which are based on themes such as the seasons or the elements is that they come ready made with four possible movements. In the case of Les Stentors, the drum corps which puts the “I” in “DCI” year after year, their show Elements featured the four classical elements in the order of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air.
2024 Les Stentors Show Announcement:
English translation: Dive into a breathtaking journey through water, earth, fire, and air where nature’s magic comes to life before your watching eyes. Let’s explore together primal harmony and balance through a high-color show.
The Stentors are proud to present their 2024 production: ELEMENTS
The beauty of what Les Stentors brings to the field each season is how they program their shows, tailoring them so that every performer is challenged without asking too much of them, while also creating a show which both fans and performers will enjoy. Considering how the skill levels of the performers fluctuates season to season, this is not an easy task to accomplish, yet Les Stentors has practically made it an art form.

https://youtu.be/ODnOsg5QnCQ?si=qHkcYH1gCbRVJJpY
This season’s musical selections for Les Stentors would all feel just as much at home in a high school or college concert hall as they do on the field, with familiar composers such as Russell Standridge and Richard Saucedo. Each selection also clearly represents their respective elements, both in title (pretty easy to figure out which element Earth Dance covers) as well as musical style. Danza Cubanas is a particular highlight of the show, thanks to its fiery Latin flair and the wonderful trombone soloist featured throughout the movement.

Les Stentors has represented Canada in the drum corps activity well throughout the years and has done so in the junior corps activity on its own since 2016. Just coming to the United States and touring with the rest of Open Class year after year in this day and age of soaring operating costs in the activity makes each season successful, and we should applaud every time we get to witness Les Stentors perform. I am already hopeful to see them next year.

The drum corps world/planet/universe is buzzing as the New York Times has released an article covering the activity. The article, titled “A 12-Minute Show, Played Only Once, Just Might Live Forever“, focuses mainly on the Bluecoats, though it also quotes such drum corps luminaries as Scott Johnson and refers to Brandon Olander and Eric “EMC Productions” Carr.
The article (gift link here) sums up the drum corps activity quite succinctly early on:
The activity is a study in passion — or perhaps delusion. It is not easy. It does not make money. It does not clearly translate to a career. And it ends; groups like the Bluecoats that compete in Drum Corps International’s world-class division are made up exclusively of participants under the age of 22.
“I can’t do this ever again,” said Mebibora Akerejola, a 21-year-old member of the Bluecoats drum line and a computer science major at Georgia State University. “So I’m willing to sacrifice a summer just to do it at least once.”
But there is something special to be found in the rules and schedules and restrictions, in creating perfection and then leaving it behind.
The article, which will appear in the print edition of the NYT between Thursday and Sunday, is the most positive mainstream coverage the drum corps activity has experienced in decade, when CBS This Morning profiled Olander as he won his first DCI title with the Blue Devils that season.
I wrote “positive” because there was a point more recently when the activity experienced bad press and publicity on a national scale. I refer to Tricia Nadolny‘s coverage of both George Hopkins and Roman Blenski and their abusive treatment of those under their care and employment. While that coverage was necessary to shed light on the significant issues of member safety in drum corps, it is good to see drum corps having that light also shining on what makes this activity great.
Let’s hope for more coverage of this nature and for the activity to continue to grow.

With the completion of the Drum Corps International World Championships on August 10, the 2024 North American drum corps season has come to a close. While it is earlier than we are used to now that all-age ends on the same day as junior corps, the season was a significant success for the activity. Congratulations to the champions of all DCI classes:
I didn’t get to as many shows this summer as I usually do, but I was able to get some good performance photos and write up my coverage at the shows I was at. Hopefully, next season’s schedule will line up better with my own.

It’s Memorial Day here in the United States. This weekend serves as the unofficial start of summer for the country, as schools start to let out for their summer breaks. Backyard barbecues abound, families take time off from work to go on vacations, and, for me, the 2024 North America drum corps season starts!
Many drum corps across the country have already started their seasons, moving into various locations to begin their month long preparations for their seasons. As the drill sets and choreo are learned while much water is consumed and sunscreen is applied, I’m scanning the schedule to see what shows I will attend.
This season, I have performances on my schedule once again. While I am retired from marching after the 2022 Bluecoats Alumni Corps, I am going to play with the 10th anniversary Bluecoats Legacy Arc. If you’re at any of our performances, which I’ll detail in my schedule below, please be sure to check us out and say hello if you’re able.
Here are the events I plan on attending this season:
I’ll also try to catch shows streamed on FloMarching. You can find their streaming schedule here.
