“I do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to The Crown!” This was the rallying cry for Buckeye High School’s 2024 program. This band has Bloo alumnus Angela White as assistant director and her daughter Amanda as a trumpet soloist!

In only their second year of OMEA marching band competition, Danbury tamed the dragon (see what I did there, Bloo fam?) they hunted, showing that it’s not the size of the band in the show, it’s the size of the show in the band.

Getting photos of Wellington was more difficult as I saw myself in the photos more than I saw band thanks to the press box window reflecting me. Fortunately, I was still able to get some good shots of the band as they performed.

This show stood out for me in so many ways. McKeesport used the same playbook as other small schools like Archbishop Alter in Ohio and Bourbon County in Kentucky, creating a very entertaining show which showcased the members both in terms of their performance abilities as well as with their showmanship. As a result, i took a lot of shots of this group, many of which turned out great.

The photos I took at this past weekend’s Brunswick Sound Spectacular marching band competition are now uploaded to my Smugmug site.

These are the unedited photos, organized by each performing band. Unlike my normal routine, I took these photos with my digicam instead of with my main camera. I was sitting next to one of the judges and didn’t want to distract them with a shutter sound going off in their ear.

I plan on posting edited photos of each band once I finish doing the same with the Norwin show photos.

Trinity High School’s program was entitled “Light Prevails”. Unfortunately, the lights inside the press box were starting to prevail at this point of the day, so I wasn’t able to get any wide shots of the band performing, hence my focus on individuals and small groups in the photos I edited. I still think the shots I got were pretty good, but I’m biased.

A little party never killed nobody. That appeared to be the motto for Elizabeth Forward High School this season as they performed their Great Gatsby show at the Norwin Band Festival, complete with guard in flapper dresses. The green light at the end of the dock was on the field as one of the props framing the band’s performance area.

Fun fact: Yough is pronounced “YOCK”, something which I’ve only had to remember once a year for the past four years. Fortunately, the PIMBA script provides the correct pronunciation, so I haven’t embarrassed myself to this point. Neither has Yough, who looked great yet again this season at the Norwin Band Festival.

Mt. Lebanon High School’s uniforms are some of the most photogenic I’ve seen at the Norwin Band Festival. The colors brighten the field no matter how cloudy the day or how dark the night. These uniforms just pop on the field and I love the shots I got of the band as a result.

I have a soft spot for Baldwin High School. There were a few years where I would drive out to Baldwin during the drum corps season to cover the show they hosted for Drum Corps Planet and Drum Corps World. While I haven’t been out that way in some time, I’ve been able to see their band perform at the Norwin Band Festival for the past four years.

This year, the Highlander band went with a criminal heist theme, complete with masks on the guard and a “jail” on the field. The band and fans are both having a fun time with this show, and I was glad to get a few good shots of their performance at the festival.

This is a band where I wish I had taken photos during the night Finals show, because the sequins on the guard uniforms just POPPED under the lights, plus the prop frames and percussion instruments had LED lighting effects which we just couldn’t see during the day. Unfortunately, there’s too much light reflection on the press box windows at night for me to get any good shots, so I had to make do with the photos I took during Prelims.

Nevertheless, I feel that I got some great shots of the Fightin’ Planets during their performance of Under The Lights. Here’s some of what I think are my best. Enjoy!

I’ve started to review the photos I took from the press box in between my announcing at the 2024 Norwin Band Festival. First up is Greater Latrobe High School.

I’m trying to get one of each section as well as one of the band in general. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a good shot of the percussion for Greater Latrobe, so I threw in a second guard photo.

I really like the way these photos have turned out, even after shooting through the press box window, which did cause reflection issues in some of the other photos I took.
