Although I have to say I'm a bit weary about excusing the behaviour and perfectionism of directors that drove people to "seek psychiatric help". Sounds like the doc about #WernerHerzog where he said that he didn't care if people died since the movie (I think it was Fitzcarraldo) was more important.

Just finished Space Odyssey for the 1st time and I think the generational gap is showing bc Hal isn't scary to me at all. His story is more a tragedy to me. He just was trying to help. Trying to follow his programming. Honestly teared up a bit when he was killed. I don't think this detracts from the movie at all tbh it's just another flavour of the kinda of themes the movie already has with religious implications and such.

In 1963, Bell Labs released a record called “Computer Speech,” showcasing early speech synthesis. Created under D.H. VanLenten, this was a major step in speech technology. Bell Labs, founded in 1925, contributed to various tech innovations. In 1961, John Larry Kelly, Jr. and Louis Gerstman created a “vocoder” using an IBM 704, famously synthesizing the song “Daisy Bell.” Science fiction writer, Arthur C. Clarke, inspired by this, featured a similar scene in "2001: A Space Odyssey." The “Computer Speech” record utilized formant synthesis, modeling the human vocal tract to produce speech. Instructions were input via punched cards into the IBM 704. The groundbreaking record demonstrated the potential of computer-generated speech, paving the way for today's voice technologies.

Still, his words about computers being foolproof, unless "attributable to human error", still rings through today.
