"We're going to have a great election campaign, with ACT and NZ First doing all the dirty work, and placeholder PM just kind of being like the default FB picture on everything ... All the billboards going up on the country and there's just him with no absolutely no face, just so people aren't reminded that it is actually Chris Luxon."

When Teanau Tuiono said "I sit on the Security and Intelligence Committee" I heard it as 'I sit on the Scary Intelligence Committee'. For a second I thought Parliament had set up a committee for "AI" doomers : P

"Māori capitalism is increasingly powerful. The Māori economy continues to grow, but not in a way that's redistributing wealth. Māori have the highest wealth inequality of any ethnic group in NZ, so the gap between the wealthy and the poor, among just Māori is the widest. That is not sustainable."

Wow. 1 of 200 just can't extract themselves from the failed anti-freedom rhetoric they've been expertly baited into, by more than a decade of corporatist Culture War strategy;
https://www.1of200.nz/podcast/1200-s2e166-online-political-violence
These muppets are champing at the bit to reduce fundamental human rights to special privileges for people who aren't naughty. With allies on the left like this, who needs the right to torpedo democracy?
Catch up or shut up.

"For example, I think Google [NZ] pays out about 95-97% of all the revenue that it earns [in "service fees" to the parent company] ... and FaceBook would be very similar, Uber would be. The percentages vary, but it's most of it, in all cases."

"I guess that's what interests me always about these kind of 'conspiracy theory' conversations about hidden networks of people doing evil things, is that a) yes, people are doing evil things all the time that they're not telling you about, because that's how power works. And b) the way those things work I think are ... ways to understand the ways that you're being downtrodden, in society. Without making it an individualistic thing."

Listening to Malcom Harris, author of the new book What’s Left: Three Paths Through the Planetary Crisis, interviewed on a kiwi radical left podcast;

"Not all libertarians are fascists ..."

Damned with faint praise! This is a good episode though.

Colin Peacock of RNZ MediaWatch got criticised on a recent edition of 1/200 for introducing a segment on Likud and the IDF's genocide in Gaza by saying that Israel was "responding" to the Oct 7 attack by Hamas;

I don't remember Peacock using that wording, but if he did, they're quite right to call him out.

"In many ways, we are a less free society event than the US. Because we're so small, and we're so easy to turn the tap on or off, for a particular set of ideas."
https://www.1of200.nz/podcast/1200-s2e115-kayfabes-odyssey
Huh? I would say exactly the opposite. In a small society it's harder to avoid rubbing shoulders with people who see the world differently. Which makes it harder to lazily write off everyone who disagrees with you as a "fascist". Because that probably includes your family and friends.

"We're constantly performing the same actions, from the 1960s until today, with no understanding of why those tactics worked, and when they didn't work, and when they didn't succeed. There's just a performance ... over and over and over again, the performance art of protest ... and it changes nothing. And I'm quite sick and tired of that."

I did have quite a high opinion of Jack Tame as an interviewer, however seeing his interviews with the #Israeli and #Palestinian Ambassadors has diminished that opinion considerably.
Jack seemed unwilling or unable to push back while the #Israeli Ambassador repeated debunked accusations of Hamas using human shields, etc, all in the name of manufacturing consent for genocide.
The folks at 1 of 200 media have done an excellent roundup of it.

"We’re joined by Tech Won’t Save Us host Paris Marx to talk Canadian politics and NZ parallels. We discuss the rise of right-wing ideology and PR as well as the influence of tech venture capital and western alignment around 'security partnerships' like AUKUS."

Great to see a kiwi politics podcast featuring a host from one of the better global tech politics podcasts.

"It's so f%&king disgusting, because they're championing the cost-cutting made through this revised lunches program. But a lot of those costs being cut are at the expense of the schools. The schools are going to have to spend extra money hiring staff to deliver these lunches, or people are going to have to volunteer to distribute these lunches.
It's so callous."

"Just a wee plea to my lefty friends not to get stuck into this idea that if you just show people enough data they will change their minds. Because this government is actively saying, 'we will erase the data'. Because it doesn't matter. It's not real to us it's not what we believe."

Speaking of media platforms that...
> still continue to disseminate terrible pieces of information, untruths, rumours
"[Politicians making blatantly untrue claims] is where media's role should be, to [say] 'no, that's just a lie', and just squash it. But they don't. They just repeat it. They amplify it."
