She worked memorably as bewitching characters for Robert Wise, Max Ophuls, Jean Renoir and William Dieterle, and was extraordinary as the sympathetic Serbian cat woman Irena in Jacques Tourneur's masterful #CatPeople (1942) and, in ghostly form, its exquisite sequel #TheCurseOfTheCatPeople (1944).
