Wonderful evening taking chums to Casablanca at the Filmhouse, then food after.
It was booked before the awful medical news, so turned into a bit of a much-needed morale booster too.

The Filmhouse is screening Casablanca over the Valentine's weekend, just booked tix for chums & me.
Apart from being one of my all-time favourite films, I really, *really* need to see scenes where the good guys beat the fascists. We did it before. We'll do it again if we have to.

This evening's viewing: the 1944 adaptation of Farewell, My Lovely. I've seen the much later version, but not this one, & I'm partial to a bit of Raymond Chandler, so when it turned up on the BBC iPlayer, that was it.

This evening's viewing: 1945 British flick Dead of Night, largely held to be the grandaddy of the "portmanteau" style of anthology #horror that Hammer and Amicus would use often in the 60s and 70s (also boasts an early "is the ventriloquist mad or the dummy alive?" story)
Unusual for the time, also unusual in being an Ealing production, better known for their comedies.

The scene where the singing of the Marseillaise drowns out the bellowing Nazis gets me every time I watch this film. Must have been very emotional for the original audience, in the middle of WWII, with no idea how it would end.
These days it reminds me we've faced seemingly overwhelming fascism before, and good people stood up to it, and crushed it. I need to remember that a lot these days...
